NeoRealm - Staring back into the Future

A Classic If Lame - Chapter 443

Jason stood up and stretched. There was a slight feeling of scratchyness from under his skin, but most people wouldn't be able to notice it. Jason was only able to tell because he shouldn't be able to feel anything at all like that and the System was forcing those areas to exist. At least for the moment.

Given enough time, the salts will dissolve into Jason's body. It shouldn't even take all that long. For the moment though the feeling was almost worse than the pain. At least the pain was a constant. This under-skin itching shifted as he moved. Even just the act of breathing made itchiness radiate out from his chest.

Jason jumped up and started to stretch. Any kind of movement, really. Just so that the muscles the System forced to exist would activate and speed up the salts absorption. He did find it slightly weird that they were being absorbed as he could clearly feel them residing under the dermis so it shouldn't really be moving around. Though maybe it was because it was salt, not exactly like people were tattooing themselves with salt or implanting it subdermally.

Still, it took the rest of the time Jason had rented the room for and a smidge of walking around after that to shake it off. So with that taken care of, Jason figured it was time to give his new "weapon" a test. Good thing the dungeon wasn't the only interesting thing around to fight.

In fact, in the opposite direction that Jason had arrived from was a nice enough little copse of trees. The trees weren't what was important though, rather just marking the center of a monster nest? Infestation? Farm?

There were a bunch of chupacabras living there, using the trees as their over-day resting spot. They weren't a local monster, instead being relocated here because of the ease of handling and containment. Most importantly though was the fact that they preferred feasting on the blood of livestock. Sure, they tended to drain said livestock if given the chance, but that just meant having the right kind of livestock.

The only problem is that the System doesn't like it when people try raising for experience so the town was doing what it could to balance the nest. Which, knowing that the town had a dungeon might make some wonder why they bothered in the first place. Because honestly? The special cattle that had a hydra-bloodline with the poison bred out cost way more than the chupacabras themselves.

Jason had made sure to ask around why and while he wasn't going to turn it down, the reason was, yeah. It certainly wasn't a good reason, but he couldn't exactly say anything against them. If they wanted to have a nest of weird monsters near town for some variety, that was their money to spend. Not like they were lacking gold with the dungeon.

Still, it did mean he could only kill three of them during his stay and they reserved the right to cancel his quota if need be. Good thing Jason wasn't going out to hunt and rather just wanted to test the conductive skin's effects while waiting for the others to show up. Of course since the monsters preferred to hunt at night, he did have to wait a little.

Time that was well spent on things such as getting an inn room and resupplying any provisions he had used up. Though soon enough Jason found himself waiting just outside of a rickety looking fence. To his left and right, separated by a decent distance were other people, also there to face the chupacabras. Then it was just a waiting game for the slightly dimwitted monsters to show up.

Second guy over to the left was the first to be attacked. The ongoing battle however wasn't enough to stop other chupacabras from attacking. They just came out of the darkness individually to try and get at the sleeping cattle in the pen behind. Soon enough Jason's chance to fight came as one of the monsters came out of the darkness in front of him.

Though the way Jason was going to fight this time wasn't going to match up to his usual methods. He wasn't in it for a quick win or his usual training. No, he wanted to test out the ritual and for that he needed the chupacabras to not only hit him, but do so while using power in some fashion.

Good thing the chupacabra's main form of attack, biting, heavily involved the use of Qi to both pierce better and numb any pain that might result from the bite. So all it took was blocking the monster with a bare arm. This worked quite well as the fangs tried to sink into his flesh.

Tried being the operative word as the fact it did use Qi to help pierce things meant an interesting side effect as a result of Jason's new addition. The defensive aspect of the Conductive skin redirected that Qi away from the area of impact and across his entire arm and most of his shoulder and chest, some of it turning into the equivalent of a light push. Not only did this mean the teeth no longer had enhanced penetration, but this process actually caused the teeth to be unable to penetrate at all.

Most likely that happened because the chupacabra's teeth were less than stellar without the Qi. Though Jason could feel a slight bit of extra resistance coming that had to have come from the defensive effect somehow. Of course now that he had tested that, there were a couple other things to play with.

Not the mystical EMP effect though. That was just asking for trouble with the locals and Jason sort of needed their dungeon to upgrade the conductive skin ritual, whatever that would do. This still left the Charged Skin part, easy enough.

Jason simply had to run his Energy through the ritual and suddenly the chupacabras attempt at gnawing through his arm resulted in a shocking experience. Even against such a mediocre monster the effect barely did any actual damage, however that seemed to be the result of it being more focused on stunning. Then as the monster was a bit stunned, Jason finished it off with a simple body blast. Except the skill ended up being noticeably more powerful than usual and a moment faster.
