Chapter 90 - Rising Tides

CRASH!

CRASH! CRASH!

CRASH! CRASH! CRASH!

The sea raged as the waves assaulted the shores around Sweet Scylla over and over again.

The previous suddenly low tides came back bigger and stronger than before, threatening to sink all the docked ships around the island.

"W-what is going on!?"

"A sudden storm?! But that can't be…!"

"What's going to happen to our ships?! To us?!"

In the central square around the golden statue of Rania Undine and the Nimue monument, both the merfolk and the Golden Garden Guild members panicked at the sudden shift in the weather.

The clouds darkened as the rain began to pour heavily on everyone, the previously subtle fog of the continent began to close in on the island of Sweet Scylla, and to make matters worse, waves of different sizes crashed and destroyed even the houses that were built to withstand such a natural disaster.

"It doesn't matter! Kill them and we'll be able to get a quick ride out of here!" Bakari, the bronze-skinned man, ordered.

"That's right! Let's get this over with already! He must be tired by now!" A member of the guild shouted as he swung his bear-like arm at the dwarf.

"... don be so hasty, lad."

"?!"

Alviss Blackwood, with his oversized hand, held up the punching fist before it could connect with his face. Then, without delay, he swung the legendary hammer Amphy that matched the size of his other hand, at the opponent in front of him.

THUD!

The still shirtless dwarf watched as the bear-like guild member flew back and crashed into three other members standing next to Bakari.

"What?!" Bakari blurted out, "How can he still fight after so many?!"

By now, Alviss had single handedly beaten four men directly. While that number didn't seem as that many, he had to deal with runestone attacks from cloaked members, arrows from long eared members, and even the occasional thrown rock from Bakari.

That is why the bronze-skinned man was questioning Alviss' stamina at the moment.

Didn't he fight Erik too?! How the hell is he going this strong after the lightning strikes he was showered in?!

Liv, the girl with the long, overflowing pink hair, on the other hand, was standing behind Bakari without any sign of taking action.

"What are you doing, Liv?! Help us!"

"I'm good, thanks."

"What?!"

"I'm new here, remember? And so far, I'm not impressed."

"Damn you!" Bakari snapped, "You want to deal with the Coin Masters yourself then?! Because I'll tell them!"

"Tsk, tattle-tale much?" Liv clicked her tongue and looked away. "Do what you want, my Sign isn't good for this kind of thing and I'm not drawing my sword unless I have to."

"I'll remember this, Liv!"

"..."

As she heard Bakari's shouts and watched him finally charge in himself, Liv looked down to check on something, but was met with no abnormal changes.

"What are you planning…?" She mumbled beneath her breath.

"Aghh!! Take this! Earthquake!" Bakari shouted once more as suddenly crouched down and slapped the ground with both hands, activating his Sign.

A moment later, the entire ground under Alviss was quaking and twisting as if it were made from rubber.

"Have ya not learned yer lesson yet?" Alviss jumped high, let out a sigh, and then launched Amphy at the bronze-skinned man threatening to topple the entire central square and the statues with it.

WHOOSHH!

THUDD!!

CRASH!!

"..."

Just as the hammer was about to hit Bakari, two transformed bear-like members tried to shield him, but upon impact, they quickly joined him in crashing in the ground together.

Alviss fell back down, but not before deflecting another arrow from the side with his battle ax.

Rain continued to pour down and the dwarf felt the waves growing bigger and bigger by the second.

"Lass! What is going on? Is this normal here?" He kept his focus forward, but addressed the current leader of the Undine Clan standing not far behind him with the other panicking merfolk.

"No, this… this happened six years ago…" Lamia trailed off as she remembered an incident from her young adult years. "The day the Leviathan attacked us…"

"?!" Alviss dodged a fireball from the side, as he called back his hammer, only to launch again at an archer not far to the side. "The Leviathan!? So, tis true then…"

"That's right… that beast… it was the very reason so many of us died so suddenly…" Lamia clasped at her heart as she closed her eyes, remembering those that were lost on that day.

The merfolk behind her staggered and frowned as they too were forced to think about the incident.

"..."

After a moment of silence, Lamia continued.

"It completely destroyed half of this island… which originally was simply a piece of land connected to the main continent…"

As she said that, the siren leader looked toward the now destroyed cathedral that was built on a cliff. The very cliff that was left behind by the forced separation of Sweet Scylla.

"?!"

Suddenly, shivers ran down Lamia's spine as she noticed it.

A growing emerald bubble that was threatening to reach the original size of the cathedral itself.

**👑**

A few moments earlier.

"Hahaha! That's it!! Keep going!!" Zoran spread his arms wide as he praised Sana for her efforts.

Normally, that might have been commendable, but currently Sana's efforts were resulting in an emerald bubble around her that increased with every second. Not only that, but the very gravity around the bubble was changing as it began to pull in everything and everyone around it. Whatever couldn't resist that pull was instantly devoured out of existence.

"Sana!! Stop-"

BOOM!

CRASH!!

Whenever Lawkey got up and tried to help, he was quickly met with another rush of light beams from the priest. Even the two swords he was holding were quickly getting overwhelmed.

"Do not interfere, miscreant! This may just be the second coming of the original light! Rejoice as we witness the Eversun Goddess bestow us with her successor! Her offspring!" The priest's expression was twisting as his eyes and mouth were starting to stretch beyond their limits.

Dammit! I can't reach her with him here, and I can't get rid of him in time to help her… I'm running out of options here… Lawkey assessed inwardly as he deflected a light beam and tried to dodge the rest, unsuccessfully. His mind was too clouded to focus on the fight. He occasionally tried to glimpse a look at the valiant siren's body. Riana…

"?!"

Just as he instinctively looked that way when he got up again from a crash, he saw Riana's body now being pulled into the bottom of the emerald bubble too.

"No! Sana! Stop!" He tried to reach the girl again.

Although it had seemed as if Sana had full control over the bubble and her powers at first, as the size of the bubble increased, she seemed to have less and less agency over it.

Not that she wanted to stop it.

"Sorry, uncle… daddy… I think I know what I need to do now…" from inside the bubble, Sana spoke with a tone too mature for a child. Despite that, she seemed to still consider Lawkey both an uncle and a father figure for some reason.

"What are you…?"

CRASH!

"Damn you! Stop, you annoying bastard!" Lawkey finally snapped as Zoran kept barraging him with light beams.

"This entire island…"

"?!"

Both fighters turned to the girl at the same time, her voice had suddenly turned ethereal.

"It needs to change!"

As she proclaimed that, the bubble suddenly grew many times its size again.

The last wall of the cathedral, the one with the biggest stained glass mural depicted the Eversun Goddess, finally broke and began to hover towards the bubble too.

Even the new pouring rain was immediately forced to fall into a focused location.

"!!"

Both Lawkey and Zoran realized it, the bubble was quickly threatening to grow into the size of the cathedral, nay, perhaps even bigger.

The resulting explosion after that would take the island itself with it.

"That's it! Bathe the world in a new light! In the primordial light!" Zoran cackled like a madman, rejoicing in the chaotic destruction growing in front of him.

In his crazed state, he had forgotten the task he was entrusted with. The only thing he cared about now was witnessing the birth of a new light. That is why he was still pushing Sana to go beyond her limits.

Either way, the little girl wasn't listening anymore.

"Good bye, daddy…" was all she muttered as everything began to rapidly get pulled in.

"Shit!! Whatever it is you're planning to do, Sana, we can find another way!!"

Lawkey tried to reason with her too, but to no avail.

Both he and Zoran were barely holding on from joining the rest of the debris being pulled into the rubble. They knew the moment they would reach it, they would be devoured too.

However…

Badump! Badump!

"?!"

Lawkey's eyes suddenly widened as he heard a loud heartbeat make its way to his ears despite the chaos around.

"Bleerghhh!"

He couldn't believe it even though he felt the shadow get rejuvenated.

"Riana! Are you alive?!" He shouted as he tried to look for her through the rubble and debris still getting pulled in.

"Barely…"

"?!"

He heard the raspy voice, and then finally saw her. She was still on the ground, holding onto the stairs of the altar for dear life after having vomited blood.

"How are you-"

"I don't know… I somehow feel full of energy again… but…" Despite what she said, the gaping wound in her stomach was evident that she didn't get healed and was still losing blood with every moment that passed.

Lawkey realized it too.

It was as if she was brought back for one purpose, and one purpose only.

"Leave her to me…"

"?!"

Lawkey was taken aback as he saw the heartwarming smile on her face.

"There is only one way to save the island now… I'll deal with Sana… I'll leave the rest here to you…"

"Wait!"

"Thank you for caring for us despite how we met… you really are an odd guy…"

"Don't!"

Lawkey watched as Riana let go of her grip and allowed her body to be sucked into the emerald bubble.

Accompanying his rapid heartbeat came the last whispers of a caring siren.

"Get your pancakes and enjoy them…"

"Find your happiness."

"You deserve it."
