Wasteland Development Diary

Chapter 44: The Thing in the Shell

Building 5, Room 3306, Mushroom Laboratory.

Zhou Yi's gaze focused on the center of the floor.

The large Stone Bag Mushroom had turned into a cocoon, with masses of white mycelium spreading in every direction, turning the entire room into a world of cobwebs.

A faint fragrance also pervaded the room.

It smelled like a blend of tea leaves and wood.

The source of the aroma was the Stone Bag Mushroom.

Zhou Yi saw that on this life-sized, stone-shaped mushroom, a slit about 30 centimeters long appeared, slanting downward from the top.

Inside the crack was pitch black.

"Chairman, there's something inside."

Sun Chonglai whispered to his side: "But I'm not sure if it's 'that'."

'That', of course, referred to the Angel of Death.

Zhou Yi first asked about Jade City.

Jade City responded that nothing particular was happening in Building 5, only that the Stone Bag Mushroom had stopped absorbing consciousness. It seemed that this process had already been completed.

However, since Building A housed a vast number of consciousnesses, this loss was almost negligible to it.

"I have given it about 18,000 consciousnesses."

Jade City said: "Commissioner, every Building Life needs hundreds of thousands of consciousnesses to awaken."

That also consumed quite a lot.

Zhou Yi worried: "Really no damage?"

"No. The residents who move in will gradually form new consciousnesses, and now that I have mastered the method of unifying consciousnesses, I only need a minimal number of them to complete various actions."

To Jade City, it was as if nothing had happened.

Confirming there were no issues on that side.

Zhou Yi suddenly thought.

18,000 consciousnesses.

Heavenly Kingdom nurtured two Skywalkers by using the Olympic Sports Center's 'Competition,' at the cost of 35,000 Mutant lives, which also roughly equated to a conversion rate of 18,000:1.

In other words, A-level lifeforms, if they don't have Firewood Mound available, need this magnitude of consciousnesses to expand themselves to break through their existing limits.

Based on mathematical deduction, the entity hatching from the Stone Bag Mushroom right now should be an A-level Angel of Death.

Zhou Yi activated [Alert].

Under the ability perspective, the Stone Bag Mushroom exhibited a faint purple hue, with the deepest color inside the slit.

Indeed, it was an A-level lifeform reaction.

For safety, Zhou Yi sent Red Kestrel to bring over the Condenser from near Big Buddha.

He suddenly noticed an eye inside the slit staring intently at him.

There didn't seem to be malice in the eye, more a sense of curiosity.

When looked back at by Zhou Yi, that eye immediately hid—or closed.

This Angel of Death was quite shy.

Just then, the tablet controller in hand suddenly transmitted Red Kestrel's voice.

"Zhou, we've encountered an invasion by foreign enemies near Big Buddha."

"The Condenser is fighting with a being suspected of being an A-level lifeform."

Zhou Yi instantly pulled up live footage from the front.

On the screen, Jiong Hecang was releasing straight green light beams, which could slice through Dead Sea, but couldn't seem to inflict enough damage on the enemy.

Floating mid-air opposite the Condenser was a young girl in white robes.

The light blades continually pierced through her body, cutting numerous holes and gaps, yet not a single drop of blood flowed out.

The girl's body was healing at an astonishing rate, not leaving any scars, and even the white robes regenerating to pristine condition.

Under the high-definition camera, the girl had a head of smooth, glossy white hair, with amber-red pupils. She looked to be around fifteen or sixteen years old, yet her face bore a pleased smile as if she was enjoying the battle.

A certain degree of spatial distortion appeared around her.

Jiong Hecang was very wary of the opponent, maintaining enough distance and continuing the ranged attacks.

The girl's voice came through the tablet clearly: "Don't block my way, Condenser."

"Otherwise, I'll eat you."

Sun Chonglai, peeking to the side, gasped and pointed to the screen: "It's her, it's her! The Angel of Death who devoured me, it's her!"

"She said, once a new Angel of Death was born from her progeny, she would give me a gift as thanks... She's back! She knows a new Angel of Death has been born here!"

Zhou Yi's heart sank.

He immediately said: "Let Wu Yi come here to watch, you all be careful, I'll go check out Big Buddha."

"Yes, Chairman."

Just as Zhou Yi was about to depart, the shell of the Stone Bag Mushroom began to flake away.

It seemed the Angel of Death inside was about to emerge.

Zhou Yi had to change his mind: "Let Wu Yi go to Big Buddha to provide support, I'll be right there."

Sun Chonglai went out to call for help.

Zhou Yi was left alone with the Stone Bag Mushroom.

As the dry, hard fragments of the shell kept peeling off, something slowly emerged from the slit.

At first glance, it looked like a wrinkled, large butterfly; its body gradually stretching out into a black-robed, black-haired young man.

Zhou Yi was stunned.

Wasn't the Angel of Death supposed to be in the form of a white-robed girl?

What's the deal with this black-haired lad?

Could it have mutated?

The young man appeared to be about thirteen or fourteen years old, with a height of around 1.6 meters, his body emitting a dangerous purple glow, indicating he was a genuine A-level lifeform.

Zhou Yi wasn't sure if it was because he had just been born, but the young man's eyes had a clear, innocent look to them, reminding Zhou Yi of his own student days.

Zhou Yi observed carefully for a while.

This black-clad Angel of Death wore a long robe not made of fabric, but of a kind of mycelium that grew from his body.

His black hair was fluffy and soft, his pupils pitch black, his facial expression a bit dull.

Zhou Yi asked him, "Can you speak?"

The other party paused, his mouth opened slightly, 'ah ah'ing twice, then finally spoke coherently.

"Yes, I can, I can speak."

But his pronunciation and sentence breaks were a bit bizarre, like a foreign accent.

Zhou Yi then asked him, "Do you know who you are?"

"Who, am I?"

The other party murmured, "Who am I... I don't know."

He adapted quickly, and soon his pronunciation became fluent.

Zhou Yi said to this newly born A-level entity, "We hatched you here, expecting you to be another form... Do you know about this?"

"I know."

The youth pointed to the floor beneath his feet, "I was born from here, this building is my parent, and I am with you."

"What I am exactly... I'm not very clear about that."

"What exactly is the situation with me..."

He crossed his arms and walked slowly around the room, sinking into a state of deep thought.

At this moment, Bone Man Sun Chonglai rushed in from outside: "Chairman, Wu Yi has already gone over to support. Ah?!"

It was surprised to see the youth in the room, "This... isn't the Angel of Death? Why does he look like this? Has the cultivation failed?"

Zhou Yi said irritably, "You ask me, who am I to ask?"

After looking around, Bone Man whispered, "Chairman, he does resemble you."

Zhou Yi took a look.

The black-robed youth, like himself, had black hair and black eyes. Similarities besides that might include healthy skin that seemed better than that of the local new humans, but it was hard to say their features were similar.

"Resemble me in what way?"

"Chairman, the way he looks right now, it's very much like you when you are in deep thought. You also like to pace back and forth."

"..."

Zhou Yi gave the Bone Man a sidelong glance.

He suspected that Sun Chonglai feared he would dispose of this newly born Angel of Death and was trying to establish a connection with these comments, hoping to elicit mercy.

"You see, he looks a lot like me as well..."

Bone Man Sun Chonglai continued.

Only then did Zhou Yi notice that the black-robed youth was actually also giving Sun Chonglai a sidelong glance.

It wasn't clear whether it was a subconscious imitation, or a true coincidence.

At the moment, this black Angel of Death doesn't seem to show any aggression or harmfulness.

But no.

The current priority is the frontline situation!

Zhou Yi abruptly turned to the tablet screen.

Two A-level employees were engaged in combat with a girl in white.

Even in a 2-on-1 situation, the Angel of Death was not losing ground.

She could heal rapidly from wounds inflicted by the light blade, but faced some difficulty against Wu Yi's Sand Control. Whether in the Dead Sea, on land, or in the air, she couldn't completely separate herself from the sand, and was thus hindered by stray sand particles.

With Wu Yi blocking in front, she couldn't cross the coast to move inland towards Jade City.

The girl had switched to a monstrous form, resembling stretching white mycelium with a soft red eye at the center.

The grass withered in the area close to her, trees and mushrooms rapidly dried up and decayed, as if a deadly special force was radiating around her.

And while she was fighting 1 against 2.

A gigantic arm suddenly descended from the sky, grabbing the girl in her monstrous form.

It closed over the Angel of Death, trapping her within its grasp. Numerous white mycelium strands writhed outwards, trying to bind and sever the fingers and arm, but to no avail.

The surprise attacker was the Leshan Buddha.

This was the first time Zhou Yi saw the Leshan Buddha in combat.

The Buddha alone suppressed the Angel of Death but at a great cost.

Cracks started to surface on its body, seemingly enduring immense pressure.

The White-Haired Monster, however, was gradually regaining her upper humanoid form, propping herself up from between the fingers, the light warping, making the Buddha's silhouette blurry as if some force was violently striking and affecting it.

The Angel of Death causes living beings to die, it's uncertain whether Building Life could withstand it.

Zhou Yi was a bit worried.

Suddenly, a voice came from the side.

"She is of the same kind."

The black-robed youth somehow also crowded in to watch the scene on the screen.

"I know that..."

He pointed at the screen, at the girl, "She extracts life to replenish and strengthen herself. This ability is dangerous; it can harm any life form."

Zhou Yi felt a chill in his heart, "Is there a way to counter it?"

"I can."

Said the youth, "My ability is the opposite of hers."

"I can heal and mend broken Consciousnesses, and through healing, I gain feedback from the Consciousness and grow stronger."

"I can heal this big rock."

Zhou Yi was slightly surprised.

The white-clad Angel of Death brings about death, whereas this black-clad youth heals and saves?

They seemed to be two different branches.

He immediately said, "Follow me."

"Ok."

Then Zhou Yi activated Jade City First Building and took the youth with him to the frontline.
