Wasteland Development Diary

Chapter 70 Alien Enhancement Technology

The dawn just broke, accompanied by a persistent autumn rain.

A small helicopter landed on the coast of Yalong Bay.

Two enhancers carrying backpacks disembarked and headed directly for Jade City to visit the local ruler.

"Mr. Zhou, hello, we are researchers from the Mechanical Knight Alien Laboratory."

"I am Lin Chen."

"I am Rosby."

Lin Chen is a short-haired man with bright eyes and a stubbled beard.

Rosby, on the other hand, is a typical Westerner with high brows, deep eyes, and blue-gray pupils, with a balding head.

They both appear to be between thirty and forty years old, which during the Wasteland era, is considered advanced in age.

After a quick greeting, the two researchers eagerly inquired about public area technology.

Lin Chen mostly led the conversation, while Rosby took notes on paper, occasionally chiming in.

Zhou Yi was also forthright with them, explaining the development and improvement processes of the technology in the safety zones.

Lin Chen listened with keen interest: "The design of public restrooms, such public facilities, is truly ingenious; it coincides perfectly with one of our hypotheses."

"We believe that if aliens meet one-on-one at close distances, the likelihood of conflicts and disputes is higher. However, if three or more aliens are close to each other in the same narrow area, they can restrain each other."

He gestured with his hands and said, "Our previous hypothesis was that, faced with complex environments, aliens would choose conservative responses. Multiple potential threats and competitors could lead them to moderate their actions to avoid unfavorable situations."

"But now, it seems that beyond survival considerations, the varied information released by multiple consciousnesses is also crucial. It has a great attraction and impact on them, making them more inclined to rationality and thought."

Zhou Yi told him: "Specific implementation needs to be gradual, not hastily rushed. From what I know, building life also has instances of incompatible personalities and mutual disdain."

The elevated bridge is an example; aside from liking Jade City, it had its opinions about several of the old alien employees.

Not all building lives are as easy to get along with as the Big Buddha.

"Understood, we will be very cautious."

Lin Chen took out a thick, hard-cover notebook from his backpack: "This is a detailed manuscript of Alien Enhancement Technology, please have a look."

Zhou Yi began browsing after taking it.

The manuscript was recorded in two common scripts, neither of which he could understand. However, there were many sketches, including insects, boxes, and some design drawings, from which he could guess some of the meanings with some conjectures.

He pondered internally.

He would need to learn the local script when he has time.

"Yuan Xiao, Red Kestrel."

Zhou Yi placed the notebook on the table and called them to "start documenting."

"Yes."

The Angel of Death and the drone began to photograph and record.

Then Zhou Yi looked towards Lin Chen: "Please, briefly summarize the principles of this technology."

"Alright."

Lin Chen's lips moved: "The growth and evolution of aliens primarily rely on two aspects. One is the enhancement of the mechanical body, that is, the further growth of the structure serving as the building body, and the second is the expansion and growth of the consciousness field."

"Regarding the mechanical aspect, every alien has its natural limit. Just like common flesh-and-blood life, you can't make them turn into monsters or grow extra limbs or tails out of thin air; these are determined by the structural limits of life itself."

"In the past, traditional technological methods involved enhancement through Light Imprint. It basically mimicked existing enhancement surgeries, adding artificial Guangna organs to the alien body surface."

Speaking of this, he smiled slightly: "This method is like covering a giant with armor, intending to guide and utilize the giant's strength."

"But this isn't an in-depth analysis of aliens, but a attempt to assimilate them using our technological framework."

"It's like trying to tame a cloud, so putting it in a glass bottle and thinking it belongs to you. It's actually bullshit — the further you go, the worse the mistake."

Speaking to the end, Lin Chen totally dropped any pretense, showing disdain for this approach.

Rosby hurriedly interjected to mediate: "But it's undeniable that it has high application value."

"This led to the development of the Detonate technology in the military field."

Zhou Yi nodded: "It seems that your approach is different from that line."

"Completely different."

Lin Chen waved his hands left and right, making a dismissing gesture.

"We pursue the second barrier, the expansion and growth of the consciousness."

"This is also the natural direction for the growth and evolution of aliens. Compared to using Light Imprint Skill to modify and enhance the alien mechanical body, it is much more challenging because the study of the consciousness field has always been fraught with difficulty."

"Besides those Concept Life beings who exist on the conceptual side of the world, we material beings, find it really difficult to truly understand the structure and form of consciousness."

Speaking of his own research work, his tone carried pride: "Though it is incredibly difficult, it is the correct path."

"We conducted numerous experiments to test the Alien's response, seeking the environment and conditions necessary for the growth of its consciousness. Ultimately, we found a method that works."

"Various consciousness information from settlers prior to their death is the change and nourishment needed by Aliens. When settlers die, their fragmented consciousness is absorbed and captured by Aliens, becoming part of them."

"However, Aliens also protect settlers, so strictly speaking, it's a mutually beneficial symbiotic relationship."

"The key is, how to efficiently and quickly provide absorbable consciousness to Aliens."

Lin Chen paused: "Our method is to find substitutes."

"The most suitable settlers are humans. Aliens were originally tools created by prehistoric humans to serve them. We, too, are humans. Although we have lost the divine powers of the mythic era, we still match well with Aliens."

"Unfortunately, human lifespans are too long; the average death age of city dwellers is just over 30 years old. Using human settlers to enhance Aliens would take too long a cycle."

"After long-term experiments and persevering selection, we eventually found a substitute."

He then took out a piece of semi-transparent amber from his backpack.

"Please look, this is the creature."

Zhou Yi took it over and examined it closely.

Inside the amber was a bee, plump and covered in dense black fur.

"It's a Horse Bear Bee, so named because it often suffers from its hives being destroyed by Horse Bears who eat their honey. Thus, they have evolved faster, are smarter, and more sociable and strategic than other bees."

Lin Chen explained, "We breed Horse Bear Bees within the Alien's body, building numerous beehives to allow these bees to continually exist around the Alien. Their lifecycle is less than two months long, so they regenerate very quickly."

"By this method, we can produce a large amount of Horse Bear Bee consciousness. As they die naturally, their detached consciousness has also proven to be absorbable by Aliens."

"With this method, we supply a large amount of consciousness to Aliens in a short time... It can be advanced to its current limit within one or two years, reaching A+ intensity."

Zhou Yi looked somewhat mesmerized.

Is this also possible?

His doubt arose: "So, insect consciousness can also be absorbed by Aliens?"

"No. Most insects are useless to Aliens."

Lin Chen spoke seriously: "We hypothesize that it's because insect lifespan is too short, and their consciousness itself is underdeveloped, so they do not meet the basic requirements needed by Aliens."

"We've also tested many types of ants, termites, Sky Curtain Moths that live collectively in the same tree, and social spiders that hunt in groups and act like soldiers... but all failed."

"Horse Bear Bee is the most suitable creature we've found, and so far the only viable insect. They need to possess higher intelligence, maintain social and group living, and face certain external pressures to prevent their intelligence from diminishing."

"To achieve this, we keep some Horse Bears in the wild to create survival threats for the Horse Bear Bees, forcing them to further evolve towards intelligence."

"After generations of cultivation, today's results are very good."

Zhou Yi thought to himself.

Mechanical Knight has researched Aliens for many years and indeed has its own unique insights.

"But there are also risks."

Nearby, Rosby added, "Based on our field tests and comparative experiments, we found that Aliens enhanced by Horse Bear Bees grow very quickly and can rapidly reach the peak of their current form. However, they show a phenomenon of reduced intelligence. As strength increases, the level of intelligence development actually decreases, leaning more towards becoming animalistic."

"We believe that this is due to the large number of Horse Bear Bee consciousnesses incorporated, lowering the average intelligence of the original consciousness. As the number of new consciousnesses is large, they become dominant."

"Simply put... this method leads Aliens towards animalization."

Zhou Yi frowned as he listened: "This is losing sight of the forest for the trees."

"Indeed."

Lin Chen also nodded: "If that were all, then this technology itself would be more detrimental than beneficial. For seeking mere brute force, why not use purer weapons?"

"However, Mr. Zhou, please let me continue. There's another part to this technology that complements."

"After being influenced by the Horse Bear Bees, Aliens tend to show certain animalistic behaviors. At that stage, we guide and domesticate them again."

"The method is actually not difficult. Aliens are influenced by environments and other life forms; the more stable the environment, the more restrained and friendly they generally are. The more unstable and variable the environment, the easier they revert to instinct."

"Especially when there are others of their kind nearby, they are particularly stable."

"We specially created 'Alien Rings' to house the Aliens; the climate and environment there are very good, and there are a large number of human settlers nearby."

"After natural guidance, the Aliens quickly stabilize. Then they also have a completely different feature from before: they will dance, using dance to communicate. This is a form of dance language, originating from the Horse Bear Bees."

Lin Chen said with pride, "This is our complete achievement."

Beside him, Rosby shrugged: "Different Aliens have different dances; we know they are speaking, but we don't know what they're saying."

"However, it's evident they enjoy expressing themselves. Although sometimes they might clash due to dancing against each other, these are minor issues; dance-offs and mutual taunting are something everyone wants to see and loves watching."

Zhou Yi envisioned a scenario in his mind.

Two giant buildings stand opposite each other, then one starts a robotic dance, and the other counters with a 360-degree Thomas spin Breaking.

This dance language… seems pretty nice too.

Zhou Yi recalled the classic GIF from the series "Summit of the Forbidden City."
