Wasteland Development Diary

Chapter 138 Electrolysis Cat Box

Sand Port, Mushroom Forest Primary School.

Liang Xing looked at the students below.

"Today we continue to talk about the application of chemistry in daily life."

"Students, what chemical reactions have you seen in everyday life?"

The students eagerly raised their hands. After more than a month of learning and participating in experiments, chemistry had become a magic-like, popular subject.

"Combustion!"

"Right."

"Precipitation."

"Good."

"Decomposition reaction!"

"Photosynthesis... and corrosion!"

"Crystallization, explosion!"

Everyone responded actively.

It wasn't that these teenagers had such a profound interest in chemistry knowledge itself.

It was just that Liang Xing had designed a little classroom trick—students who participated in class discussions and answered questions would be involved in his in-class experiments and might become Liang Xing's lab assistants.

The students might not be very interested in chemical theory, but they were intrigued by the chemistry experiments that showed expansion, color changes, explosions, combustion, and the displacement of new materials.

Therefore, Liang Xing's classes were always lively with discussion and debate.

These young kids, with their fresh perspectives and unbridled ideas, occasionally came up with insights that even Liang Xing found inspiring.

"...Alright, now it's time for the experiment."

Liang Xing picked up the wooden box by the door and carefully placed it on the lectern.

He looked around at the 36 students sitting in the room.

They all sat up straight, their eyes full of expectation.

"Today we have a very special experiment. I won't tell you what it does; you'll tell me after observing."

Liang Xing deliberately kept them in suspense.

He gently opened the box.

Inside was a transparent glass aquarium, with an opening on each of the left and right sides, equipped with rubber tubes connected to a metal canister. The tubes and canisters on the left were marked with red, while those on the right were black.

At the bottom of the aquarium was a black rubber column supporting a miniature glass house. It was connected to fine metal wires on the left and right, flashing erratically, like a lamp.

"Cat house!"

Sharp-eyed students had already called out.

"Electric cat, there's an electric cat!"

The students ran near the lectern to observe more closely.

Sand Port people all knew about the company's cultivation of electric cats, but opportunities to see them in public were rare.

Liang Xing waved his wooden stick pointer and said solemnly, "Old rules, keep your distance, ensure ventilation, and remember the safety regulations for experiments!"

The students immediately opened the glass windows on both sides, standing in an orderly fashion outside the marked line on the floor, each trying to get a better look. Some prepared telescopes to improve clarity, while others stood on tables for a higher vantage point.

"This is indeed a cat house; inside is an experimental work electric cat from the company, named Flash Spirit No. 3. I call it 'Assistant Teacher'."

"Assistant Teacher is friendly and stable, a professionally trained electric cat that won't attack people and has good cooperation capabilities. Today is also its first public appearance."

Liang Xing pointed the pointer at the left tube and canister, which were marked with red flame symbols.

"What does this symbol mean?"

A student answered, "Flammable and explosive!"

Someone else added, "It must be stored separately! It can't come into contact with high temperatures or fire."

Liang Xing nodded, then pointed the pointer at the canister on the right.

The skull and crossbones on the canister were very conspicuous.

Another student said, "Highly toxic; you can't just open it or touch it, the substances inside are lethal if they evaporate."

"Correct."

Liang Xing praised.

In every experimental class, he tirelessly goes through a safety operation warning phase, which is beneficial for instilling good safety habits in these students.

To make it clear at a glance, he also marked each piece of equipment with symbols to help the students understand the associated risks.

Liang Xing took a bucket of solution he had prepared in advance and poured it into the glass container.

After filling it halfway, he closed the lid.

"Observe carefully."

The lights in the cat house began to flash faster.

After about ten seconds, a burst of lightning shot out from inside. It zipped back and forth in the water-filled tank, causing all the metal wires in the glass tank to emit brilliant high-lights, illuminating the entire classroom.

"Wow!"

"So bright!"

"Much brighter than the Yellow Firefly Mushrooms... just like in Jade City!"

"This is a lamp, an electric lamp! Teacher Liang has recreated the electric lamp of mechanical life!"

The students chattered excitedly.

Some immediately noticed a key point: "The electric cat is swimming! Look!!"

Just as the sharp-eyed one described, the electric cat, 'Assistant Teacher,' was swimming in the liquid of the tank, its movement slowing down, stabilizing into the shape of a lightning cat.

The electric cat swims back and forth in the water, looking quite content.

"Turns out electric cats like water!"

"No, this water isn't ordinary; it must be some sort of chemical solution."

Suddenly, a student says, "There are lots of bubbles and gas coming out of the water surface. It doesn't look clear like regular water and is slightly murky, suggesting there might be something else in it."

"The gas being generated enters two sides. On the left is flammable and explosive material, and on the right is highly poisonous substances... This is a chemical reaction, decomposing or displacing from this liquid."

Liang Xing was secretly astonished.

Such keen observation skills.

He looked towards the student who spoke: "What is your name?"

Mushroom Forest Primary School has three classes totaling 147 students, and Liang Xing, having only been employed for a little over a month, still couldn't recognize all the students.

"Teacher, my name is Chen Ji."

He knew this name.

From what he'd heard from the seasoned teachers Diamond and Sun Chonglai, Black Hand Mushroom 102, Chen Ji, and Bei Ta were the three most promising students, excelling in all subjects. They were currently assistant programmers in the Program Department.

Liang Xing gave him an encouraging look: "Chen Ji, based on your observations, tell us your assessment and speculation on this experiment."

Chen Ji was neither tall nor short, and his appearance was neither particularly attractive nor off-putting—rather ordinary.

But when he spoke, he had a unique persuasive power that made you listen involuntarily. The other students were looking at him, surprisingly without anyone whispering.

Chen Ji examined the perimeter along the warning line: "As far as I know, life only maintains a relaxed and restful state in an environment it deems safe and comfortable."

"The electric cat didn't return to the safest cat house but is floating in the solution of this container, which it seems to really enjoy. Just this fact alone is economically valuable in the field of electric cat breeding."

"Since we can't communicate with electric cats, we can only rely on regular interactions and the trust and attachment built over long-term breeding and companionship. This special pool makes it feel comfortable, just like its own playground."

Liang Xing smiled: "Not bad. Continue."

No wonder the kid came highly recommended.

Indeed quick-witted.

Chen Ji stared at the glass tank again, focusing on the rubber tubing behind the gas outlet and the two metal cans at the end.

"This chemical reaction produces two types of gases. Although flammable and explosive materials are dangerous, gases that can be ignited and exploded can also be turned into a type of fuel or energy."

"On the other side are poisonous substances. In medicine, toxic substances can cause life's organs to malfunction or change micro-properties, and yet many poisons are also raw materials for drugs."

"So, I think this experiment offers three values."

"It provides a novel electric cat device that makes electric cats more comfortable, closer to breeders, and maintains stability."

"Then, through the electric power of the electric cats, it extracts two kinds of chemical ingredients for processing and production."

Chen Ji touched his head: "Teacher, I can't say more than that, my knowledge is still too limited."

But this was already astonishing.

A bittersweet feeling arose in Liang Xing's heart.

When he was 11 years old... his handwriting wasn't even neat, the thing about talent really is cruel.

But as a teacher, having such a student was a stroke of luck.

"Well done, student Chen Ji. Your observations are meticulous and well-founded."

Liang Xing said to all the students: "Now let me reveal the answer. This experiment itself is not complex; the chemistry involved is actually quite basic."

"This solution here is saltwater, or sodium chloride solution."

"After electrolysis by the electric cat's power, sodium hydroxide solution, chlorine gas, and hydrogen gas can be obtained. These three substances are widely used as raw materials in various fields of the chemical industry."

"Sodium hydroxide, also known as caustic soda, can be used for textiles, dyeing, papermaking, making soap, metallurgy, wastewater treatment, and adsorption of heavy metal ions, as well as the production of alumina—this is the largest caustic soda application."

"Chlorine gas can be used for disinfection, bleaching, sewage treatment, and especially in the disinfection of drinking water, it plays a huge role."

"Hydrogen can be used to make rubber, convert energy, metal welding, insecticides, germicides, herbicides, and is also an important chemical raw material for synthesizing ammonia, methanol, ethanol, etc."

"I've written this formula before, but this is the first time for an application experiment,"

He looked at the students and said: "I just added the electric cat, and everything changed. The electric cat itself continuously releases energy, which we can't stop, so we need to find a way to utilize it rationally."

"That's chemistry for you, finding catalysts, deducing reaction processes, discovering environments where results can be applied, and then extracting what we need from nature."

"I can tell you all. This device 'Electrolysis Cat Box' has been approved by the chairman, passed the invention review, and won the first prize of the Wasteland Invention Award, which will be announced shortly."

The students below looked astounded, many of them exclaiming the teacher's strength.

At this moment, Liang Xing felt a bit embarrassed.

His hard-to-contain vanity... still couldn't resist the urge to show off to his students in advance.

He quickly found an excuse to change the subject: "Want to win awards and receive a high reward? Study chemistry, a science packed with the secrets of wealth and power."

Encouraged by him, the students began to share their own thoughts.

The classroom became noisy and lively again.

After class, Liang Xing packed up the box and secured it to a handcart.

And left the classroom.

He found a clawed pig outside with a scarf wrapped around its neck.

"Mr. Ye Zhao?"

Liang Xing asked: "What are you doing here..."

Mr. Ye Zhao communicated through the signal transceiver: "The electric department is currently holding the latest technology meeting. You're a technical consultant and need to participate. The chairman is also attending, hurry to Jade City. I've already informed Xie Dongshan, we're just waiting for you."

"Alright. But I still need to pack up my Electrolysis Cat Box..."

"Bring it along, let's go."

"Okay."
