Chapter 3: The Death of Black Emperor

The Black Emperor is dead?

Zhou Yi was puzzled.

Then who was that Black Emperor at the Exhibition of All Things?

There was no information about this from the Heavenly Kingdom, nor were there any such rumors.

The only suspicious point was that the Black Emperor himself did not come; he appeared through a form similar to remote projection.

Zhou Yi looked at the Book-eating Demon: "Is the information reliable?"

"Very credible."

The Book-eating Demon said, "This Dream Demon consciousness has been fixed; it's just a heap of pieced-together consciousness fragments and no longer moves. Its existing information won't change, remaining at the last moment before it was dismembered."

"I think, at that time, it shouldn't have deliberately faked such a message."

That makes sense.

Zhou Yi asked, "Specifically..."

"That's all we know for now."

The Book-eating Demon spread her hands: "To decode such vast consciousness fragments and find these useful bits from a massive amount of disordered and repetitive content is like piecing together a puzzle from billions of shards. It's very difficult and time-consuming."

"The discovery of the Black Emperor's death was serendipitous. We can keep trying, but how much time it will take is uncertain."

"This Dream Demon was reassembled after being shattered. The general structure is correct, but there are still many deviations. As the old saying goes, 'A broken mirror is hard to repair.'

Zhou Yi's heart stirred: "If we can piece together these consciousness fragments, we can obtain more inside information, right?"

"Yes. But that's extremely difficult."

Da Vinci reacted: "Chairman, do you want Sun Hao to use 'Consciousness Puzzle' for the restoration?"

Zhou Yi nodded.

"Would that be too much?" The Book-eating Demon hesitated slightly: "Sun Hao is currently only at level A. Under the influence of the Evil Brain, he could be in great danger."

She displayed her healer side at this moment.

Zhou Yi said, "With the Big Buddha, there's nothing to worry about."

That was his confidence.

When Sun Hao was called over and informed of this, he did not hesitate: "I can do it. There's no need to activate the Evil Brain; I can repair it just the same."

He was very excited, eager to give it a try: "I've never encountered a Light Core Level patient before. This is my great luck! I must heal it!"

Zhou Yi thought to himself, Sun Hao indeed has Yuan Xiao's boldness and enjoyment of challenges.

"Father, the consciousness of the patient is severely damaged. The consciousness blocks are incomplete and fragmented, but they still retain the last bit of connection without completely collapsing. This is something I've never seen before."

Sun Hao observed carefully: "However, its consciousness is enormous. It will take a lot of time before I can possibly repair it."

He placed his hand against the container wall.

Geometric light paths unfolded from his body, connecting with the Evil Brain, forming a closure.

The treatment began.

"I will act with him too."

The Book-eating Demon said.

A [Book of All Living Beings] appeared in her left hand, and a black pen in her right.

She read the consciousness fragments from the Evil Brain and began diligently writing in the thick-skinned book.

The two Mechanical Doctors, Da Vinci and Galen, began medical observation and biological experiments.

Zhou Yi and Ni Ge left the laboratory and walked into the hallway.

He asked, "The insects in the Mud Tree World, what do you call them?"

Ni Ge touched the back of his neck: "In the language system here, they are called 'Usurper Worms.' They seized our positions and power, and drove us out and slaughtered us. Their true means of attack are consciousness, no wonder we couldn't resist..."

Zhou Yi and he sat down on the chairs.

Yuan Xiao stood beside them.

"You just said that the Usurper Worms mainly control the Mud Tree People. They rarely control the Dead Sea Guangna Species?"

"Yes."

Ni Ge recalled: "Those Usurper Worms chewed down the Sky-reaching Trees, and we had to search for new trees everywhere. During this process, they hunted us. I think it's because the Mud Tree People have the best brains. The worms themselves are very dumb; they most lack intelligence, which we are highly developed in."

"The Mud Tree People, like the humans here, are intelligence-based. We created many plant tools, like adventure vines and simple tools like blade grass, plus a large amount of fruit that can be directly picked from trees, making life easier."

"Before I escaped, many of my kind were parasitized and enslaved by Usurper Worms. I didn't expect they would directly strip away the brains and make them a part of themselves... These beasts!"

"The Evil Brain might be the result of a Mud Tree Person's brain further transformed by them."

He grew angrier as he spoke.

Zhou Yi had Yuan Xiao bring two cans of cola, handed one to Ni Ge, and opened one for himself, taking a sip.

"They integrate with the brains and then cross dimensions with the Brain Ark... So there are many Light Core Bodies among the Mud Tree People?"

"Chairman, no."

Ni Ge drank some cola: "Food is abundant on my side, so we are strong. But for some reason, there are no Light Core Bodies born there."

"In the past, I thought it was normal, from birth to maturity, then the strongest peak, and then natural decline until death. Only here did I learn that it's possible to break through the life cycle and become stronger."

"I think, there are probably two reasons."

"First is the companion plants."

He pinched the adventure vine on his body: "The Mud Tree People live with companion plants. Whether explorers and warriors of the Mud Tribe, or naturalists and logistics of the Tree Department, are like this. Without companion plants, it's like losing hands and feet; we can't do many things."

"Their existence made us lose the motivation to go further."

"Perhaps reaching the Light Core Body stage needs acquiring companion plants, like Hei Fu evolving into a Light Core Body, gaining specific Pan Tree Elements... But we had no external pressure, so no motivation. Later, the Insect Swarm came too fast, and before we could adapt, we collapsed."

Ni Ge gulped down some cola: "The second reason is the Great Holy Spirit."

"We have no such concept, and seemingly no such entity exists."

"There is no Concept Life, no independent awareness body. Our side seems like a purely material world... Though the Usurper Worms can capture various awarenesses, before their birth, we never saw other conscious bodies or sensed such entities."

"Chairman, I think it's not just because of the Usurper Worms. There should be other reasons for the absence of the Great Holy Spirit. The Cave People said they also did not know of the Great Holy Spirit, and with their civilization's intensity, they would have discovered the Great Holy Spirit."

Zhou Yi nodded.

That made sense.

But specific results would only come with an actual survey of the Mud Tree World.

Now that you mention it.

The artificial leg had been treasure-hunting there for several days and still had not returned.

It seemed that mid-level items were not easy to find either.

Two days later.

The Medical Department sent news that the Book-eating Demon had found details of the Black Emperor's death.

Zhou Yi immediately hurried over.

In the lab.

The Book-eating Demon was delighted: "Sun Hao's ability is really good. He continuously repaired consciousness fragments, which significantly improved my filtering and retrieval efficiency, making the whole process much easier. Chairman, can we recruit more healers from the Angels of Death in the future?"

Zhou Yi agreed: "Their group is inherently small, which may not be easy. We can, however, issue a specific recruitment announcement from the Medical Department to bring this group into the medical profession."

At that moment, Sun Hao was curled up on the couch, temporarily comatose from exhaustion.

"Here's the situation."

The Book-eating Demon solemnly said, "According to the Dream Demon's records, the Black Emperor was severely injured shortly after establishing the Heavenly Kingdom by three Heavenly People substitutes, and finally died years later. The three substitutes were killed by the Black Emperor on the spot. No one outside knew of this, not even other Heavenly People substitutes."

Zhou Yi's gaze deepened.

The true Heavenly People had no reason to kill the Black Emperor, the surrenderer, as the gap in strength meant no conflict of interest. If they wanted to act, sending a Transformer would have been the simplest.

In other words.

This was a spontaneous act by the Heavenly People substitutes.

The Book-eating Demon continued: "At that time, the Black Emperor reached an agreement with the Dream Demons. He asked the Dream Demons to use his body to maintain the Black Emperor identity and keep the Heavenly Kingdom running so the Empire could complete its hundred-year plan."

"He entrusted himself and the Heavenly Kingdom Concept Body to the Dream Demons, now known as the 'Heavenly Kingdom Paradise.'

"The current Black Emperor is actually a Dream Demon in disguise, but using the Black Emperor's body, making it appear as if he is still alive."

"The Dream Demon Black Emperor can travel everywhere and remain undetected. Because the Black Emperor's terminal consciousness was transferred to the Dream Demons, today's Black Emperor is more like a Dream Demon form."

Zhou Yi suddenly realized.

No wonder.

This time, the Black Emperor inexplicably suggested that Zhou Yi become his successor to manage the Empire.

It seemed the Dream Demons also did not want to manage such a large Empire...

Zhou Yi couldn't help but wonder: "Why? Why did the Black Emperor choose the Dream Demons with such a significant sacrifice, rather than other successors?"

"According to this guy's records, it was to ensure maximum stability."

"The Black Emperor believed... his generation had given their all but could only maintain a barely stable surface environment. They once resisted the Heavenly People but failed due to the massive strength gap. Future generations need this stability and time to grow, and the Heavenly Kingdom is the stabilizer of earthly order."

"The Black Emperor thought the struggle wasn't over, and new sparks would ignite in the future, leading to more resistance. Each resistance would make the world's life forms stronger."

The Book-eating Demon couldn't help sighing: "The Black Emperor... was indeed a remarkable person."

Zhou Yi was also moved.

This former resistor accepted the harsh reality of not being able to fight a powerful enemy but did not give up hope. He continued to struggle quietly in his own way.

"According to the records, the agreed time has come."

The Book-eating Demon said: "So, the Dream Demons started looking for the Black Emperor's successor everywhere."

Zhou Yi asked, "Did they never think of ruling the Heavenly Kingdom themselves?"

"Well... actually, Dream Demons are inherently lazy."

The Book-eating Demon laughed: "According to this guy, being an emperor is terribly exhausting. The Dream Demons take turns playing the Black Emperor, rotating every few years, and it's incredibly tiring..."

Zhou Yi was speechless.

The Dream Demon Black Emperor wasn't lying after all.

He was indeed tired, worn out.

And just wanted to find a successor and retire quickly to rest.
