Wasteland Development Diary

Chapter 54 Plant People Shu Yumei

The plant-human hybrid Mud Tree People were preserved in the laboratory of the Medical Department.

Zhou Yi followed Ni Ge all the way to the destination.

Here, there were two metallic vessels reminiscent of coffins, inside which lay two people with bizarre physiological structures, one male and one female discernible through their biological traits.

The man's neck and head had transformed into a large purple flower, with numerous extended petals.

His hands and feet had grown vines, resembling some kind of external strange flagella, still moving without any pattern.

The woman's body was more intact. Her eyes stared blankly at the ceiling, her skin covered with climbing-plant-like greenery, as if she wore a dress made of leaves, resembling some mythical forest creature.

Ni Ge said beside Zhou Yi, "Chairman, although they transformed themselves into monsters to resist the Usurper Worms, I still want to bring them back and see if there's a way to restore them, like using our organ repair surgery…"

"Restoration is impossible."

Da Vinci's entity stood nearby, the screen flashing a cold light: "Physiological damage and mutation are irreversible processes. Organ repair surgery can only replicate the cells that originally died of aging; their organs have already transformed into plants or truly coexisted with plants, a change at the species level."

"Although their brains are relatively intact, they've been affected by the plant environment, sharing characteristics with plant humans whose brains are damaged. It's not completely destroyed, so they respond to similar beings like Ni Ge, but this response is interfered with and canceled by plant instinct."

"..."

Ni Ge's face was bitter: "I know, I just wanted to try."

Zhou Yi observed the two plant-human hybrids.

They were both level A, the same as Ni Ge.

[Panoramic Reading] displayed.

{@unit consciousness highly fragmented, currently being digested and absorbed.}

Plant-human hybrids like Crazy Dave only retained the instincts after their transformation into plant organs.

The Mud Tree People's plant technology was advanced; they must have known the consequences and costs.

However, they still chose to explode with the Usurper Worms.

Rather become monsters than forsake revenge.

Zhou Yi asked Da Vinci: "Can I touch them?"

"You can."

Zhou Yi then reached out to touch the man with the flower head.

Energy input, consciousness synchronization.

Nothing.

He tried the Tree-clothed Woman next, receiving the same result.

Suddenly, a thought occurred to Zhou Yi.

He looked at Ni Ge: "I remember you said that the Usurper Worms could parasitize human brains, making them act according to their will. During this process, Mud Tree People could still maintain their self-awareness?"

Ni Ge froze, then nodded: "Yes, Chairman. Why do you ask?"

Zhou Yi didn't answer.

He questioned the entity within his Light Core Right Arm: "Can you control Usurper Worms to keep the brain functioning?"

"Yes. Mr. Zhou, this is the realm Usurper Worms specialize in. They lack intelligence but seek highly intelligent brains to help them survive better."

Zhou Yi brightened: "Then theoretically, Usurper Worms could repair and restart these brains?"

"Theoretically feasible, but practical application requires testing."

He then shared his idea with the group.

Ni Ge listened in astonishment: "You want to use Usurper Worms to repair their brains? But Usurper Worms only damage and control them…"

"Incorrect."

Zhou Yi shook his finger: "Those are wild Usurper Worms. The ones we use in surgery are tamed by the Cave People. Strictly speaking, they are actually biological tools used by Cave People."

Ni Ge's eyes suddenly sparkled: "Right, right! How could I forget? The company has already modified these Usurper Worms!"

"Using their abilities, we might really repair the brain!"

"As expected of the Chairman! You indeed have a solution!"

Da Vinci, still cautious: "It's a direction to try. We can implant Usurper Worms through the equipment, unaffected by these plants, but results depend on actual outcomes."

The experiment began immediately.

The target was the Tree-clothed Woman, who still had a brain.

Da Vinci and Galen, both Mechanical Doctors, operated, along with the Cave People's team led by the Dong entity, and their tamed Usurper Worms; responsible for physical repairs.

The consciousness repair team was led by Master Canghai, assisted by the Book-eating Demon and Sun Hao.

Four hours later.

Da Vinci's team first produced results.

"Chairman, we've implanted 16 Usurper Worms in this plant-human hybrid's brain. The Cave People demonstrated exquisite control, activating multiple brain regions, restoring balanced activity across the brain."

"Physiologically, judging by the data, brain activity levels have basically returned to normal. EEG is without abnormalities or functional inhibition, imaging shows no pathological changes, cerebral blood flow and metabolism are normal. The brain's condition is now 99.9991% similar to Ni Ge's, physiologically healthy."

"She reacts to Ni Ge, her eyes follow, she attempts to reach out, but she cannot speak or express accurately."

Zhou Yi looked beside him.

At that moment, the Tree-clothed Woman's eyes were fixed on Ni Ge, reaching out as if a baby longing for an embrace, unable to vocalize, her facial expression rigid.

Master Canghai's team finally completed their painstaking work after sixteen hours.

"Chairman, mission accomplished."

With a relieved smile, he gently touched the Tree-clothed Woman's brow.

Her initially vacant eyes gradually revived, lips moved, desperately trying to express something.

"Ah, uh, uh…"

"Heh… heh…"

Struggling merely to exhale, she seemed to have forgotten how to speak.

Her limbs too were uncoordinated, unable to lift herself, her actions difficult.

Facing strangers, her eyes were filled with fear, desperately curling up in the corner of the metal container.

Ni Ge approached, extending an adventure vine, waving it before her.

The Tree-clothed Woman seemed distracted, recalling something, soon clutching her head in apparent pain.

Master Canghai explained: "This is normal. Synchronization between consciousness and body takes time; currently, her consciousness struggles to control her body."

"Our repair surgery just completed. Her fragmented consciousness has now restored to a complete entity, heavily reliant on the physical structure supported by the Usurper Worms."

"Thanks to the Cave People's tamed Usurper Worms, their group in the consciousness domain is indeed impressively gifted. Historically, there's never been such an example of reassembling fragmented consciousness into a coherent entity. Remarkable beings."

He sighed: "If they thrived on Earth, they'd be our Dream Demon's mortal enemy, perhaps already ruling the world."

Zhou Yi inspected the Tree-clothed Woman: "Has she restored from plant-human hybrid to normal Mud Tree Person?"

"Complete recovery is uncertain yet."

Master Canghai adjusted his glasses: "We merely repaired and restored her fragmented consciousness, but her body still has irreversible organ damage, with over 30% transformed into plants; this fact remains unchangeable."

"From a consciousness perspective, indeed, she's reverted to pre-plant-human hybrid status."

"Yet."

"Like a bed-ridden patient for years, regaining use of body and brain habits requires a recovery process. This part necessitates further consciousness repair and Feng Ying's rehabilitation treatment. How much she can recover remains uncertain for now."

However, the recovery process surpassed everyone's expectations.

By the second day, this plant-human hybrid managed to slowly move her legs and arms, no longer uncoordinated.

On the third day, she began walking independently, albeit with slight unsteadiness.

By the fifth day, she resumed speaking, expressing basic Mud Tree People language.

By the nineteenth day, she had largely recovered.

Zhou Yi invited her to Jade City.

Ni Ge translated beside him: "Chairman, her name is Shu Yumei, a naturalist from the Tree Department, was very young at the time of the incident.

Shu Yumei's voice was somewhat slurred, her mouth muscles evidently not yet agile, often appearing anxious while speaking.

Upon synchronization of consciousness, she relaxed significantly.

But Shu Yumei insisted on synchronizing both consciousness and language, communicating in Mud Tree People's language together with Ni Ge.

"Thank you very much for saving me, mighty Chairman."

"I only remember the pervasive Usurper Worm infestation reducing living space, barring further development of plant-based weapons against worms."

"Ultimately, the naturalists had to choose an aggressive path, transforming themselves into weapons against worms, monsters against monsters. By drawing lots, we decided who would become such Insect Hunters. After transformation, the brain would be muddled. I became this through that lot drafting."

"Due to specific alterations, my body's plant-based weaponry only targets Usurper Worms, not our kind."

"Most Insect Hunters are warriors for each tree… but it seems our side likely lost, leaving only these Insect Hunters remaining. Normal individuals must have either fled or perished."

Shu Yumei's eyes dimmed at these words.

"I'm alive, you're alive; there's hope!"

Ni Ge encouraged: "Now that the Chairman has devised ways to restore Insect Hunter brains, we can continue awakening and saving everyone!"

Shu Yumei froze, then gazed at Zhou Yi with hope: "Can you? Will you help us? Please help us, won't you? We can work for you, cultivate all kinds of plants…"

Zhou Yi nodded: "If it concerns employees, it concerns the company. While developing Jupiter, the Wasteland Development Company will provide all possible aid and treatment for Insect Hunters."

"Great!! Thank you!"

Shu Yumei's tears streamed freely, overwhelmed by emotion: "Great, so great… there's hope for us all!"
