The next day, Tyler woke up a lot earlier than he was used to. It was around five in the morning, and the first thing he did was head to the gym. Ever since he got that side quest from the system, he was more determined than ever. Even though it was a side quest which meant it was optional, Tyler was still determined to complete and he knew doing that meant giving it all he had because he was already at a disadvantage.
Almost all the wonderkids that would be nominated for the Golden Boy award would've started playing for their clubs the year before, some of them would already be widely recognized. He just came in during the January transfer window and didn't even get a chance to make his debut until the first week of February. Him getting to the top ten of the ranking would be something that could be considered almost impossible.
To some people, that fact alone would deter them or decrease their morale, but Tyler wasn't most people. Even though he was young, going through the setbacks that he went through early on had strengthened his mentality. Because of his injuries and trouble getting game time, he became the most hardworking player and every coach's dream player. He knew what his life was going to look like if he didn't get the system so now that he got the opportunities that came along with it, he wasn't going to take it for granted.
"Hoo..." Tyler exhaled as he just completed a set of Brench Press. It was his last drill of the day.
During his gym session, he focused on lunges, squats, calf raises, and the likes. He was doing anything he could to improve his physical condition. He had improved massively from where he was before he got his system, but he still felt like it wasn't enough. He'd watched games where the defenders continuously outmuscled the attacker coming at them and he didn't want to go down as one of the sorry attackers.
By the time he finished with his little gym session, it was already a few minutes to seven in the morning. He went into the toilet, quickly freshened up and rushed to the Monaco Performance Center.
To his surprise, he managed to arrive a few minutes before he could be considered late and immediately went to put on his training wear. The team had breakfast together and did a bit of recovery work, some video analysis before the real drills officially started.
Their next match was on the weekend, and it was against Paris Saint Germain, who had so far been the undisputed number one in French football. They were, as usual, at the top of the table, and there was quite a distance between them and the second place despite it only being February.
What was worse was they had managed to strengthen their already deadly squad, adding new arrivals like Khvicha Kvaratskhelia from Napoli. The Georgian had started quite well and adapted to life in France quite easily. His arrival didn't do anything to nullify the threats that Paris Saint Germain already had in the form of their stacked attacking depth which consisted of players like Ousmane Dembele, who although didn't have a blockbuster start to life in France, had recently started to pick up his form, Desire Doue, the number one wonderkid from France the season prior and Bradley Barcola, whom everyone knew right from when he was ripping it up in Lyon. And that was only their attack, their midfield and defense hadn't even been mentioned yet.
"Alright boys, this weekend we're making a very tough trip into France, into the heart of France, into Paris, into the backyard of the reigning champions of French football. It's going to be a hostile match, it's going to be tough, it's going to be very difficult, but it's a game that we must play and most importantly, it's a match that we must win". Adi Hutter addressed his team before the training session started.
"Now, I'm not going to sugarcoat things. They have the better team, they have the better facilities, they have the better stadium, they have more titles than us, and they'll walk into game knowing that they can get the win, but we can't give them that. They already have so much more than us, so we need this win, we can't give them the satisfaction of having that too". Aid Hutter said. He said a few more words of motivation, most of which Tyler couldn't remember. All he knew was that when Adi Hutter finished talking, he was fired up and ready to walk through a metaphorical wall of fire for his gaffer.
They started the day with a few defensive drills. Usually, Tyler would be happy as the attackers were usually left out of such things or they would be doing finishing drills separately, but this time they were included in it. Tyler was being made to track back and help his fullback against imaginary opponents. Adi Hutter knew and acknowledged the threat that the opposition's wingers would bring with them to the game. He was stimulating things to make sure that they were always double teamed whenever they had the ball.
Adi Hutter, along with the rest of his coaching staffs, stimulated various scenarios and made sure that the players were always positioned well in order to have a good response to them. He even made the wingers practice going on the defensive against each other to sharpen them defensively, even if it was just a little.
Through this training session, Tyler realized something that he didn't really notice before, and that was the fact that he sucked at defending. What baffled him even more was that as bad as he felt he was at defending, the rest of the wingers were even worse.
Adi Hutter didn't even think of starting Tyler in such an hostile away ground but his performance defensively, which was quite woeful but better than the rest of his attacking options made him think differently.
After they finished the defending training session, Adi Hutter allowed them all a bit of rest before they started with another training drill, which focused on counter attacks. They didn't need a soothsayer to tell them that they wouldn't have much of the ball when they played against Paris Saint Germain, so they were trying to fashion all sorts of quick breaks.
Adi Hutter also acknowledged that even though he needed most of his attackers back to help the defensive players out, he needed an attacking outlet, a runner that could latch onto long passes, and also a very good distributor. For that reason, he decided he was going to play a 4-4-1-1. formation.
After checking the data, he already knew that Folarin Balogun would be the one starting as the striker, the only question that he was asking now was who would be starting behind him. He had quite a few ideas in mind, but he wasn't willing to settle on any one without first experimenting things.
The counter attack drills focused on getting the players from back to front using the fastest set of passing combinations. It usually involved a lot of one touch passes and showed the impressive abilities of the professional footballers at work. It also increased the chemistry of the teammates in attack so that was an added advantage.
The main event of the training session, and Tyler's personal favorite, was the eleven versus eleven training match which pitted the starters against the reserves. He thought he would be playing with the reserves as usual, but he was shocked when Adi Hutter named him as part of the starters and George in the reserve team.
Tyler was delighted with the new development. He had been working hard during the past month to get that chance, and now he had finally gotten it. Although he felt a little bit bad, being the one to take his friend's spot, he was still overjoyed at opportunity that he got, even if it was just in a training match.
After the two teams were announced, Adi Hutter called Tyler aside and spoke to him.
"Alright kid, you're in the starters eleven because from what I've seen from training, you're the best player to occupy that position. But I hope you understand me when I say that you're definitely not starting in the weekend match. What kind of a coach would I be if I started a seventeen year old, in his second professional game in a hostile away match against the reigning league champions".
Tyler nodded slightly when he heard what Adi Hutter said. He understood where the coach was coming from, and the fact that he was trying his best to protect him, but Tyler didn't care about the fact that it was an away match or that it was against the best team in the league. He wanted to play, and he planned on doing everything he could to make sure that he did.
