Wolves of Hader

Ch. 3

The girl held out the bowl she had brought to me.

"Eat this. You haven't had a single meal today."

I pretended to give in and took the bowl.

Inside the bowl was a mysterious grain soup.

I picked up the wooden spoon and took a few sips.

The siblings watched me silently.

It seemed the girl naturally cherished the youngest, and the boy, despite his attitude, didn't actually dislike his younger sibling.

"Hey, Roger. Have you really come to your senses?"

"Is that any way to speak to your little brother?"

"It's just strange, that's all. It wasn't enough that the dead kid came back to life, now he's talking, too. And look at his eyes. They aren't the dull eyes Roger used to have. Don't tell me you've become smart again?"

It must have been truly shocking for the siblings.

If the child had died, then this body no longer has that child's soul.

"Was I dead?"

"Yeah. You definitely died, but you came back to life after an hour. Two years ago, you also got really sick and became an idiot. You used to just sit by the window every day on your bed, staring outside."

The girl cut in.

"Do you really not remember anything?"

I nodded and asked, "Where am I?"

"This is the east of Arshaire."

"Is Arshaire the name of the country?"

"No, it's the name of our continent."

"What's the name of the country?"

"This kid really doesn't know anything, does he?"

"Ross, be quiet."

The girl drew even closer to me.

"This place, where we'll be living now, is the eastern region of the Kadena empire. We're from House Hader, one of Kadena's great families. I'm Rozie Hader. This is Ross Hader. You are Roger Hader."

"We're nobles?"

"Of course. Our house is of imperial blood."

The boy looked immensely proud.

But if we are of imperial blood, why have we come to such a polar region?

The girl glanced at my face and spoke.

"I was going to tell you later, but maybe it's better that you know now. You probably guessed, but we were exiled here. We did come by order of His Imperial Majesty, but I think there's a conspiracy."

"It's obvious. The grand duke Syren's scheme."

"We don't know that yet."

"How could we not? Art Syren hated us so much. So did His Imperial Majesty. Even though father achieved so much during the west conquest, how could they send us to a place like this?"

The girl's face darkened.

The boy clenched his fists tightly.

"I'm sure it was the Syren family that caused mother's death, too. Just wait and see. I'll train in the sword with all my might and take revenge. Then I'll proudly return home!"

"Ross."

"What?"

The girl looked at the boy with pity.

"Father was exiled for high treason. I know father was wrongly accused, but we can't go back. I'm not that old, so I don't know well, but you need power to fight in politics. We've lost our territory, our knights, and all our power. We simply can't go back anymore."

"Why can't we go back? How many of father's friends are in the capital, or the west frontier? Don't you remember all those nobles who used to visit our house? There were even famous knights!"

Tears welled up in the boy's eyes.

The girl, who had looked ready to cry, became strangely calm.

"Do you know how many knights we had in our house?"

"I do."

"And how many do we have now?"

"What does that matter!"

"This is our reality, Ross. You know what it means for knights to break their oath and leave. There are no knights that would serve our house anymore. What could we possibly do in this countryside?"

"Still..."

"So don't even think about revenge. If we ever try to raise an army, we're finished. The only reason we're alive is because of our imperial blood. You need to practice the sword, but don't ever dream of revenge. Never."

The boy became overwhelmed with true sorrow.

The girl comforted him.

As for myself—this was someone else's business, so I felt indifferent.

But anyway, where on earth is this place?

Is there any way to go back home?

If I really died, that would be a problem.

"Can I ask you something else?"

"Sure. What are you curious about?"

"Do you know Earth? Or perhaps Rac?"

"What's Earth? Rac is the name of the whole continent."

"Huh?"

This place is Rac?

"You mean we're inside the game right now?"

"Game? What's that?"

"A game. The world you can enter through a sinker."

The girl and boy looked at each other.

Their expressions said, what in the world is he talking about?

The boy spoke.

"He's gone crazy again, hasn't he?"

"What's a game, and what's a sinker?"

I hurriedly asked again.

"So, you're saying the world we live in is Rac?"

"Of course."

"And does it have two moons?"

"Well, of course there are two moons. Would there be only one?"

In the world of Rac, there were two moons.

People considered it perfectly normal, so no one found it strange. It was the same in another dimensional world.

But this isn't the Rac I know.

The Rac I spent 20 years in didn't have nobles like this. There were no knights, and I'd never heard of anything like the Kadena empire.

In fact, when Rac opened up, it was crawling only with monsters and not a single trace of humans could be found. There were no proto-humans, and the whole continent was wild—untouched by mankind.

People developed those lands, built structures, made clothes and tools just like in reality.

They even manufactured modern alloy armor, not leather armor like here.

In other words—

This isn't the Rac from the game that I know. I touched my head, but couldn't feel a sinker.

That means this is a different Rac.

"How many continents are there in Rac?"

"There are five continents, of course."

"What are the names of the five continents?"

"We're in the Arshaire Continent. It's the biggest and greatest continent in Rac. To the southwest is a small continent called Beltern. To the southeast, there's an island continent where barbarians live. And then, across the vast seas..."

"There's Aindel. The mysterious continent where Elin live."

All of these names were new to me.

"Does the Arshaire Continent span both the northern and southern hemispheres, with the west of the northern hemisphere being unusually long?"

"The west is unusually long?"

"Northern hemisphere? Southern hemisphere?"

Rozie and Ross looked at each other.

"Don't you know what the continent you live on looks like?"

"How would you know that, Roger?"

They really seemed clueless.

Still, I was sure of the shape I described.

With just this, I could confirm it.

"Is Aindel out in the distant sea, but no one can get there?"

"I've always heard nobody can go that way, because of the Cursed Sea."

"The Cursed Sea!"

It was just like Rac.

A giant L-shaped continent in the northern hemisphere, and an ㄴ-shaped one in the southern. Plus, this area matched where our guild used to be.

The corner of the L-shaped continent.

And the Cursed Sea.

In the [game] Rac, there was a sea like that out in the distant ocean.

It was a place haunted by unknown beings—anyone who tried to cross it would get caught in a massive storm, their ship capsized, or they'd go mad and kill their companions.

So no one ever made it past those waters alive. If you died in that zone, you'd be forcibly ejected, but here in Rac, you'd truly die—so no one dared try.

Does this mean the world from the game actually exists in reality?

Or was the real world somehow linked to a virtual reality world? But then, why were there never any people in the Rac I knew?

Could it be this is a connection to Rac from a long time ago?

That can't be.

If humanity were somehow connected across time and space to ancient Rac, then the traces of Earth's humanity should be here.

"What kind of people were the ancient Rac-ians?"

"Ancient people?"

"There must have been people here thousands of years ago."

"Of course there were ancient people. They had a splendid civilization, but it was destroyed ages ago. There was a demon invasion."

"Are there traces of that civilization today?"

"There are. Plenty of ruins."

"Oh, I have a book."

The boy rummaged through an unopened chest and brought out some books.

He seemed completely flustered by my sudden change in intelligence, fumbling around.

I glanced through the books Ross brought. The siblings watched me as if fascinated by what I was doing.

Especially Ross, as if wondering if I was really that same idiot brother.

At a glance, it was clear—the ancient people of Rac weren't from Earth.

The ruins, like temples, had no connection to Earth's civilization.

People who played the game for money would have had no reason to build such temples.

Even with just a quick read, the contents amazed me.

Tales of great mages and heroes. Legends of the ancient dragon race. The myth of the great war against demons.

The history of continental wars among their descendants.

For some reason, my heart was pounding.

The thought that I might never return home caught in my mind, but there was nothing I could do about it now.

The world of the game Rac had always felt as if it had been crafted by a deity, apparently on purpose.

And now, I'd been dropped into a world exactly like that.

Can this really be called a mere coincidence?

Well, for now, I would just go along with it.

If I really did die, I'd have to live here. And if I want to find a way home, I'd have to try my best to survive.

"I want to go south tomorrow."

"Why south all of a sudden?"

"No reason."

This region is my guild's territory.

So there's nothing about this area I don't know—its terrain, what is where, or what materials can be found.

If the materials I know exist here for real, then I could make various potions, and do everything I used to do in the guild.

In this reality, I could use the [Buffer] skill.

And even all the combat skills of other classes, too.
