Blood Moon Rules: God’s Third Hand

chapter 14 - The Final Moment: Theft Activated!

As the high-tier Bewitching Ghost drew closer, Zhou Su could only sigh inwardly. So it’s “made by the Ghost Eye, undone by the Ghost Eye.” Aren’t Bewitching Ghosts supposed to be rare? How the hell do I meet one even here? His mind raced, searching for a way out.It wasn’t hopeless yet. As long as the other hadn’t realized he was human, there was still a sliver of survival left.“Looks like I’ll have to gamble.”He planned to “accidentally” stumble, overturn the banquet table, and use the chaos of cleaning up the mess to slip away. That guest was merely attending; for the Headless General’s sake, he shouldn’t bother punishing a mere servant. But if Zhou did that, his plan to steal from the Headless General would be ruined. The crimson book required its target to be within three meters. Once he caused a scene like that, there would be no way he’d be allowed near the banquet again.“He’s with me. Do you have a problem with that?”A cold, clear voice spoke from behind him. Zhou froze—the sound was strangely familiar. An illusion? How could anyone he knew possibly appear here?He turned—and for an instant, went completely {N•o•v•e•l•i•g•h•t} blank.Gu Zhiyuan stood behind him, wearing a gold-inlaid phoenix coronet and a black-and-red dragon-embroidered court robe trailing across the floor. Her pale face radiated calm authority, carrying a weight that could not be ignored. Why is she here? Zhou’s mind whirled in confusion.“Oh—so he’s with the Black-Feather Princess. In that case, I wouldn’t dare question,” the Bewitching Ghost said quickly, the bloodlight fading from its eyes and its tone turning respectful.“Don’t wander off,” Gu Zhiyuan said coolly, giving Zhou a brief glance before walking away.Zhou hurried to follow. One thought struck him—it must be the identity Gu Zhiyuan had drawn from the Blood Moon’s random assignment.Still, he couldn’t help wondering: Can someone really draw such a high-rank identity? The moment she took her seat, every fiend in the hall rose and raised their cups in salute—including the Headless General itself.Facing so many dreadful beings, any ordinary human would have trembled uncontrollably. Gu Zhiyuan’s expression did not change. She picked up her cup and downed the crimson liquor in one smooth motion.Zhou had wanted to stop her, but she moved too fast for him to react. He watched anxiously—everything here, food or drink alike, was deadly to mortals. But his tension eased when she showed no sign of distress. Her seat was just below the Headless General’s right hand. Zhou’s carefully laid goal of drawing near had, somehow, come true almost effortlessly. The absurdity of it all left him a little dazed. Now the only thing left is to wait.By his estimation, less than half an hour remained before the Blood Moon’s end.——“The time should be about right,” Chen Zhengkai muttered, listening closely. Hearing no movement outside, he crawled out from behind the haystack.Since splitting from Zhou, he had been hiding in that woodshed, and though several ghosts had passed by, none had entered. He had survived untouched until now.The Blood Moon rule was nearly over. It was his cue to act.He took out the Lychee-Wood Torch, lit it with a lighter, and the purifying flame flared bright.Chen flung the torch into the haystack. Once the fire caught, he bolted through the door without looking back.In a ghost domain, setting a purifying blaze was like scattering salt on a nest of leeches—this place would soon become a target of fury. If he didn’t run now, when would he?The flames roared higher, devouring the entire shed in moments. These structures looked ordinary, but were formed from condensed ghost energy—only the lychee-wood flame could ignite them at all.——The banquet reached its peak as the dancing ghosts took the stage. The fiends cheered and drank with abandon.Zhou stood behind Gu Zhiyuan, marveling at her composure and effortless grace. He’d watched her trade words with the powerful fiends several times—each moment teetering on exposure, each time flawlessly defused.Placing himself in her position, he knew he could never have managed it.Only now did he realize that drawing an exalted identity wasn’t necessarily good luck. The higher one stood, the greater the risk of being seen through.“It should be almost time,” he murmured. The nearer the critical moment came, the calmer he became. He glanced sidelong at the Headless General, curiosity flaring. What kind of material could I steal from something like that? From the parade to now, his “contact value” with the general had to be high.“Fire! Fire!”The shout came from outside, followed by golden flames leaping skyward—reflected in the eyes of every fiend present.Zhou blinked at the inferno rising just beyond the wall, surprised that Chen had managed to cause such a commotion. The Headless General rose to its feet, wrath blazing so hot it became literal black fire. The cast-iron throne behind it warped in the heat.As the host of this grand celebration, to have disaster strike just before its completion—its fury was understandable. It stomped once, and the black fire coalesced into a writhing dragon that soared toward the burning yard. The purifying flame should have been bane to all corruption—but against that black dragon’s blaze, it burst like soap bubbles and vanished. The spreading fire was snuffed out in seconds.Zhou’s eyes gleamed. This was exactly what he’d wanted—the Headless General’s full attention drawn elsewhere. The crimson book floated above his head, glowing fiercely.Everything he’d done—building contact, creating distraction—had been for this. The moment of activation was almost here.Blood Moon Rule Countdown: ten seconds… nine… Zhou held his breath, mind honed to a single point.Five… four… one—!The book flared like a rising miniature sun.【God’s Theft activated. You have successfully stolen…】Zhou never saw the rest. An overwhelming malice slammed into him, draining the color from his face.He felt like a rabbit caught beneath a beast’s gaze, his heart crushed in an invisible fist.High above, the blood-red moon began to fade. The crimson light peeled away like strips of silk, erasing everything it touched—fiends, pavilions, and halls alike.Zhou’s pupils contracted. The bloodlight that should have been withdrawing from the Headless General… had frozen midair.Time itself had stopped.“The Headless General… can resist the Blood Moon Rule!”He had never imagined this—its power was beyond anything he’d conceived.A heartbeat later, tiger roars erupted from Zhou’s body. Three phantom White Tigers appeared—and shattered instantly. The White Tiger Amulet’s protection was laughably weak before the General’s might.A scream tore from his throat. Pain surged through his skull in waves, each worse than the last. His vision went white, and he collapsed unconscious. Then the frozen bloodlight began to move again.Even the Headless General could not truly defy the Blood Moon—it had managed to halt it for only a single second. Its figure, together with the crimson radiance, was wiped away—as though the entire nightmare had been nothing but a dream.
