The situation stood. After some discussion not much else could be done. Talia had actually caused more problems. The sword in the sky had been used to stop one of the trains, and it was still there; the rails would need to be replaced.
Luther and Layla had some discussions about what to do now. It meant some of the engineers would have to come back and fix their rail line which shouldn't take long according to Talia, she said she managed to contain it to a very small part.
The situation could have been much worse but it was still a large wound in Valentine's power.
Kurt had taken some time to study their own gate. The new way to enhance his eyes needed to be practiced in any event.
When he gazed at the gate with the new eyes the sight surprised him. It was nothing like he was expecting. Different from Valentine's he saw before.
There seemed to be a stake on this side where the borders were coming to a knot or a crystal-like object. The ethereal weaves were complex but now that Kurt could see them he felt they would be possible to perform with a bit of practice, at least with twine.
The other side of the gate didn't seem to have a stake in the ground but a floating orb. It seemed there was a difference between the two sides. This made sense to Kurt. He felt they could be switched though.
Taking a closer look at the stake he saw the gem reflect its own power and felt familiar. The pinkish color of the strings reminded him of the waters of the well. The power within him. Not thinking too much Kurt put his hand out and felt a resistance that went away. Looking at his hand, did he just feel the string?
The thought about the strangeness of the mysterious ether objects. Could it be that simple? One side had to be placed first and the other side could move freely. That's why you have to close it from that side or switch them through the gate. If both were ever on one side and the gate closed they would lose the ability to travel through the gates at all. It was like an anchor and a hook.
Kurt decided he would have to take a closer look at what Layla had done. The anchor on the ground still seemed too familiar to him. But he couldn't place where. It was dug into the ground and had a long cylindrical shape. On top, there was a web that looked like it was supposed to be holding something that could attach to something else. He looked through the gate at the flying object and realized maybe that part? There were seemingly matching grooves in the object.
The stake was the anchor and stayed put while Layla could move with the other side of it. But where did they originally come from? His eyes still weren't used to using the power from his red mana. And he had to take a break there he felt it would become easier though like everything else practice would help everything.
But before he did he could see some of it coming a bit more in focus. He still couldn't see auras like Talia most people showed nothing at all.
He could risk screwing with their gate. It was too valuable. It was unlikely anyone else had even seen that part other than Layla.
He had a meeting with some of the glass blowers he was looking forward to meeting. He knew he was missing things he didn't know even existed. His hobby project just had advantages that others didn't.
The benefits of being able to bottle the paste were apparent as well. The faster they could get it sealed the better as well. This also gave Kurt the ability to handle different sizes as well. He also was going to need a steady supply of larger beakers and stills.
They were mostly concerned about where they would have to set up shop. The glass would need its own forges and would have to find the best material they could use. It was possible they could source some of the glass raw materials here. They would have to see if that was viable. The hope is that the mixture will give the bottles a distinct colorization and purity.
Kurt had gotten together with Betsy and started thinking about long-term building. They were up until now just set up when and where ever. But it was going to start being a problem.
They had maps of the area and started discussing where everything should start going. The engineers, the rails, the forges, warehouses, housing, and more mess halls. The current situation was getting crowded. Kurt also was going to have to make an actual lab to make the paste in instead of his house eventually.
A lot of work is needed to bring the settlement into a proper town. They still lacked a lot of personnel.
"It would be nice if we could utilize the water better," said one of the men, "with a waterwheel for a true mill. That could help process the raw material for glass, or some grain. If you ever start really farming."
That was another thing to consider when planning everything out water usage and farming. They didn't have many farmers. He knew the goblin did make grapes for wine but not much else. And there weren't really enough elves to do a large operation. Kurt had a lot of options he would have to discuss with Sara and Layla.
They knew what they needed though. Carpenter and mason workers. That should be a lot easier to find than the blacksmiths. They would need to start a recruitment campaign. Harder than they were before.
Betsy had said the start on a mobile stand for the towns was progressing and should be able to have a minimal trip to the next town they visit if they stay on schedule. Hopefully, they could start selling some of their wares. That would make Jacob happy.
