Mana Wells

Chapter 227: Leaving

As they saw the thing waiting for them in the sky below them a massive white circle started to light up. He turned down not recognizing.

Barney had darted past Kurt pushing him to the side.

"What was that for?" He said as he turned, seeing Barney, who grabbed Mistress Lilly's hand.

"This is bad," said Barney, "I can't take her."

"What do you mean you can't take her?" said Hank.

"The circle, it's blocking me," said Barney. "I just tried to get back with her. I went as fast as I could, you all saw me just now."

"Harvey," shouted Kurt, "take Mistress Lilly, Hank, you Harvey, and Barney leave. Hopefully, we can get out of its range.

"But.." said Lilly.

"This is no time," said Hank. "We are leaving and it's final. Tell Mother, I don't care. You are coming with me now. I am taking command of the guard and we are leaving until I know you are safe." Hank looked at the guard who seemed to agree with Hank.

Mistress Lilly looked at Hank, "What are you saying?" Hank whistled.

Harvey ran forth looking at Mistress Lilly. "Get on."

"Kurt this isn't what we…," said Lilly.

"They are right," Kurt said, rising from the ground, "you should not be here, Lilly.," he turned towards Hank, "I order you to bring Mistress Lilly to Wellspring, no matter her objection. "

"You can't…" said Lilly.

"I am, Hank, I order you to escort Mistress Lilly back to Wellspring immediately."

"Yes, Lord Kurt," said Hank. "I will ensure it."

Mistress Lilly didn't look pleased. But hook Kurt's order Hank would be absolved for anything he did to get her back. Upon Kurt's, it was to be done. Mother Carla had told him so.

"Master," said Harvey.

"Yes, Harvey,"

"There is another one."

Kurt turned around, to where they were supposed to be retreating to. There was something else in the air behind them.

"Tom! Joe!"

Tom fired an arrow with power from his bow behind it. He was a great shot, and his bow could infuse magic into arrows. Tom was especially tuned to the wind which made his arrows accurate and amazingly fast.

Joe was chanting and spraying dust everywhere, on himself, his mistress Lilly, and anyone around them, supporting everything.

Then Joe started laying down a circle of colored dirt.

"Tight formation, we must protect Mistress Lilly!" Shouted Hank. "All shamans with shields activate. Scouts two volleys, fire at will."

A scout and a shaman had jumped up next to Lilly riding Harvey. Hank, Tom, and Joe were in action.

"I told you this was a bad idea," said Hank. "We are retreating with our Mistress."

Much of the problem was what Kurt was looking at. Two humanoid creatures with wings. Suspiciously close to the appearance of two angels.

He wasn't even sure if this was the shadow clan anymore. Or Horus.

Kurt had wanted to face the opponent himself, but when the other appeared behind him, he lost his whole plan.

Hank jumped up on his Barbariape next toHarvey. "Everyone defends Harvey" was tight enough but enough for a scout, a shaman, and Lilly. Hank had made a request for one for this event that was much wider.

Then four more Harveys appeared. Illusion, with the four on their back. They could run in five directions, but only one would be real.

Kurt had seen how Joe led before. He was much more of a planner. But Hank was very sure about his decisions in a way Joe lacked. Joe could see the larger picture better but Hank could see the moment better.

The moment was bad.

"Let's hope they are just after me, and they have no idea about Lilly," said Kurt. "I'll have to try and lead them away."

"This will be a ground evacuation. We will try to take cover as much as possible" said Hank. "Wyvern should be trying to distract the…" Hank looked up for a moment, "demons."

The creatures resembled angels especially from afar. They had the same body type and they had wings, the demon's wings resembled more of a bat or dragon, while the angel's had feathers. They also had tails and horns.

Kurt had just assumed they were angels, Horus's or another god's coming after them. But as they started to come closer the differences became more apparent.

Hank had begun his retreat on his Barbariape, with Lilly a scout and shaman on Harvey's back. Joe and Tom had decided to support Kurt as much as they could.

Kurt flew into the air, this would be the first time he would actually be flying in combat. Without the need for his water boots. He's been practicing but he didn't have any sparring partners.

He started to make an angled retreating path, he wanted to get the attention of the demon that was in the direction Hank was heading in first.

Wyverns began to scatter towards both of them. The battle was about to really begin.

This wasn't supposed to end up like this. It was supposed to be an easy target as they brought more troops than necessary plus Lilly's guard. Anyone would have seen a win from the plan.

He drew his sword and made a horizontal ice sheet and shot it after the demon. He was still far enough away that dodging was trivial. Kurt was trying to antagonize him.

Tom and Joe had flown up next to him. Tom was on a wyvern, and Joe a rider hawk. This meant Joe was faster but he couldn't tread the air in place. While they were all in motion they could match speeds.

"So what's the plan?" Kurt asks Joe.

""Why do you look at me?" said Joe.

"You don't have any ideas?" Said Tom, who was also looking at Joe.

"Who is the Lord here?"

"I mean, I'm sort of giving out titles, you've seen it," said Kurt, "if I make you a lord will you have a plan?"

Tom laughed a bit, and then Joe.

"I honestly thought you had a plan."

"Yeah, distract them till Lilly gets away."

"That's the concept of a plan," said Joe.

"And I'm taking advice from my advisors." Which circled back to Joe.

"We can try the wyvern thing again," said Joe. "But it would take down Hank as well."

"I have a feeling that won't work," said Kurt. "But it's coming now."

"The other one hasn't changed course," said Tom, "it could just be defending the fort. The retreat has been signaled. We don't know what we are really up against."

"Hank called them demons."

"Corrupted angel or so the stories say," said Joe, "I'm not sure if they are that, or just another similar species."

"We got to come up with something," said Kurt. "We don't have the time."

"Well my plan is pretty simple," said Tom, showing his Bow and quivers attached to the Wyvern, "shoot them. Hopefully in a way that leaves an opening for Kurt."

"I was going to try and stay high I guess, and try to get a blow when they separate. I have a bunch of fire coins, and I'll cast a lighting if I change my staff's charms.

"So I'll hit them when they are close to Kurt and you'll give them no place to run to."

"Good enough for me," said Kurt. "I'll take some of that wyvern stuff, and hope it has an effect on them, so try to throw, you might have to blast them for it to spread out. It's worth a shot at least."
