"Sir Arthur," said Layla, " a pleasure as always. I think I should assume we are surrounded?"
"Yes, and your gate is secure."
"Ohh I'm sure you have both sides."
Arthur gave a stare at Layla, one that told he really didn't.
"So I hear the chicken is very good here," Layla seemed to relaxed for the situation.
"Arthur, what are you doing here?" said Kurt.
"Putting an end to whatever you kids think you are doing?"
"Kids?" said Kurt.
"I have seen you diapers Kurt."
"You are not my father."
"Never said I was," said Arthur.
"It's fairly obvious," said Layla, " he has captured us."
"You have no right," said Carl, "we have the King's approval this is not Fire Clan territory."
"The clan disagrees," said Arthur, "this is matter concerning the other side of the gates, which the kingdom has no authority over."
"You have no authority over us either," said Kurt.
"Kurt calm down, I do believe Arthur is a peace offering in a way," said Layla.
"A peace offering."
"She is right Kurt, I'm here because I have convinced the Fire clan you can be reasoned with. You may not believe it Kurt, but I don't want you to get hurt. How would I tell Jacob that? And I don't want any of the people around us to get hurt in a fight either. And my clan will kill you Kurt if they have to."
"So what we just —" said Kurt
"We have our meal Kurt, I don't think Arthur ordered for no reason," said Layla, still calm.
"Ohh I'm definitely looking forward to it, and Kurt," Arthur said, eyeing him, "when we are done I have a nice carriage that will be waiting, and we shall all get in it, like proper nobles." Arthur turned towards Carl, "well not you. We really have no business with you. We are willing to allow you to keep what you have already, and simply walk away, minus the gate." The waitress had come back and put a glass of red wine in front of Arthur and quickly left. Arthur swirled the cup, took a big word and then sip, "not terrible, for a house wine."
The dinner had been very quiet.
"So we hear about this healing paste, that actually a good find."
"Yes Sir Kurt's research seems to bring results," said Layla. Cutting some chicken on her plate.
"Really, you did that Kurt, it's actually pretty amazing."
"It was a team effort," said Kurt uncomfortably.
"There is no reason to be modest, Kurt," said Layla, "it's not like we can really change the situation here."
"Walked right into the trap, I'd say," said Arthur, "we have really just been waiting for you, where else would Carl bring you."
"The chicken is good, not the best I've ever had, I'm afraid," said Layla, "But Carl does tend to spoil us."
"Thank you, my lady," said Carl.
How was Layla just having the meal like Arthur hadn't just basically threatened them. The whole meal it was like she was ignoring that at the end we were going to just walk into their carriage, right to the enemy, no back up, not even a sword, Kurt was starting to panic.
"Come on. Kurt, lighten up, did you really think you could just do this all, and no one would react. A bunch of kids trying to just walk around like they own the world. You had your fun now the adults are here."
"I'm not a kid."
"Kurt, you're coming with me, I have so many others here with me, just enjoy your meal. You can survive this, I promise you that. And they will kill you. You just have to submit like a good boy." said Arthur taking a bite of the chicken, "this is really good."
"Submit?"
"Do we have to talk about work, it's not like I'm going to make you, I'm just bringing you to the boss really, and it's me because we thought it would be the easiest."
"Kurt they are not going to kill us, if they wanted to do that, they would have attacked the carriage they kill you I'm gone, they kill me they lose a Fae they can control.," said Layla. "I'm curious to hear their argument myself, from the leader."
"You are?" Said Kurt. She nodded back.
"I wasn't really expecting the chance to speak to them personally."
"If you say so."
"See Kurt she gets it," said Arthur, "she got to play her game a little but she understands, she's lost."
"Perhaps," said Layla, continuing to eat, "it wouldn't be wise to fight you right now, I understand that."
"Trying to be tough isn't going to work my Lady, we have you. And though I don't like it very much, the clan has ways to convince people."
"Your hands aren't clean just because you don't do the deed," said Layla.
"I'm just the polite messenger here, if it wasn't me it be someone else perhaps not as politely."
"If you say so," said Layla.
They continued their dinner and didn't get dessert. Carl begrudgingly took the offer of walking away. And was not happy about his warehouse being annexed. Kurt, Layla and Arthur had gotten into a carriage together
"See it's not that bad, and we aren't that far," said Arthur.
"Sure," said Kurt.
"Kurt you got yourself into this mess, Jacob had no idea, don't blame me for this. You should be thanking, there were members that wouldn't have had you in such a nice carriage. But I thought we could at least have a little dignity here."
"Thank you for that," said Layla, "I don't feel we ever mistreated you either."
"I don't either, you were in a tough spot."
"Compared to this one?"
"Well, this one is tough for you, I actually prefer it this way."
"Understandable," said Layla, "you seem very comfortable."
Kurt couldn't understand Layla's reaction, she was just giving pleasantry really. Like it was just another trip. Kurt knew that something horrible was going to happen. Maybe Arthur is right, and Sara, he had gotten way over his head. He was sort of just a kid. It's not like he could do anything with the people around him, even less right in their heart.
He was strong, maybe two other guardians and that was giving it a lot, he had no idea about the clan's real powers, but they had more. Outnumbered, out matched, and out gunned. The carriage ride continued and Layla and Arthur had continued their superficial talk.
