"Based on the list of requirements you have provided me, we can now start searching for a house for you. But are you sure you can afford it all? You don't… look stable to me, and the rent will not be cheap."
The agent whom I had hired to help me find a house looked me up and down before he declared this. He was judging me based on my looks.
Usually, I would not have minded, but it irked me at that moment. I masked my mood to not show my annoyance, but the same could not be said for Fenrir.
"Shopkeeper, can I bite this human? How dare he make fun of you like that. Does he not know how great you are?"
Fenrir's growls made the agent take a step back in fear before he immediately noticed that Fenrir was leashed and wouldn't be able to reach him…
Or so he thought. Fenrir could easily break apart the leash any second he wanted to. The only reason he was not doing that was a simple command from me.
"Fenrir, calm down."
I commanded, and the dire wolf calmed down… a little bit. But the glare Fenrir was giving the agent was a threatening one. I turned toward the agent to assure him that I could afford any price.
"Price won't be an issue for me. I might look like this, but I come from old money. So you can show me a decent place without worrying about the money."
The agent suddenly looked understanding, and he nodded.
"Ah, I see. In that case, please follow me. I will show you somewhere really good."
He assured me before I followed after him. I heard the man mutter something about 'good for him' and 'arrogant old money bastards' under his breath, but I decided not to pay too much attention… for my own sake.
The first apartment he showed us was huge, but I was not too keen on living in a penthouse since the space did not feel like my own.
"—and this is the best place with the best view. You can see the skyline and also—"
The agent continued, but I became more and more detached as I looked around. This place… was just not for me.
"I would prefer a detached house compared to an apartment, if you don't mind."
I told the agent, and he paused to give me a look.
"You want… a detached house? Are you sure about it? You should reconsider your thoughts. Apartments are all the rage these days. Not only are they safe, but they are also hassle-free, and also—"
The agent tried to convince me to rent an apartment or a penthouse. I could tell that he was working so hard because he had a commission with these places higher than the ones for a detached house.
But after living with a lot of space for myself, I did not think I would be able to adjust to an apartment again.
"I would still prefer a detached house. Security is not a concern for me."
The power humming through my veins told me that I would not lose to anyone or anything. There was no need for me to fear anything in this world since I was no longer a human.
A part of me also reminded me that I could drop this act any second I wanted and force the human in front of me to follow my will.
But I did not want to do that. I wanted to focus on living my life without much trouble and like a human.
"I see… alright. Since you are so sure, I will show you what I have. But I have to warn you that the result is not… pretty. I don't know whether you will actually like the house or not… or even if it is safe…"
The agent tried to subtly make me change my mind, and I was starting to feel annoyed with him.
"Alright, if you don't want to show me a decent house like I want to, then I will go to someone else. You are not the only agent out there, you know."
I told him, and that snapped the man out of whatever headspace he had fallen into.
"N-No, wait! Sir, there is no need to be hostile like that. I was only trying to match your status as an elite consumer. But if you really want a detached house, then I will show it to you."
The man sounded almost bitter as he told me this before he signaled for me and Fenrir to follow after him.
We drove for a little while before we reached the outskirts of the town where detached houses were located.
The one we reached was a huge mansion with a massive garden and all other facilities. It looked like a decent place to stay… but there was a weird air around the house.
"This is one of the finest facilities we have in our collection, but there is a catch. They say that this place is haunted, and anyone who lives here usually goes insane… not that I believe that…"
The sudden nervous laughter of the agent in front of me betrayed what he actually thought about this place. As we neared the house, I felt a presence look at me, and the man beside me shivered.
"A-Anyway, this place is special, and we don't usually show it to people. But since you are special, I decided to show it to you."
The man told us before he opened the door. The place actually looked decent, and Fenrir seemed to like the garden.
Except for the weird presence around me, there was nothing actually wrong with this place.
"I will take it. You can have me sign the contract to rent this place for the next month."
I told the agent, and he looked relieved and scared at the same time. His eyes shifted around before they landed on me.
"Are you sure about that? Don't you feel that… presence around us? Are you sure nothing will happen to you?"
The agent asked once more, his eyes darting around to make sure nothing was wrong.
"I am sure everything will be fine. The sooner we sign that contract, the better it will be for us. I want to move into this house today itself."
I told the agent, and he sighed in disbelief before he forwarded me the contract.
"Alright, here! You can sign here and here. Here are the keys for this place as well. If anything happens… please reach out to me as soon as possible."
The agent told me before he quickly made a run for it. He did not even ask me for payment at the moment.
I turned toward the house once he was gone and sighed.
"Shopkeeper, this house is haunted. Do you need me to hunt down the ghosts?"
Fenrir asked, but I shook my head.
"No, let's not cause trouble. We are only here for a month. As long as the ghosts leave us alone, we have no reason to get rid of them."
I told Fenrir, and he nodded. I had a feeling that the ghosts had heard me as well, as the oppressive feeling of the house suddenly went away.
It took us a whole day to settle down and cook food. I was in the mood to make something quick, and we ended up eating quite a few plates of instant food.
Strangely enough, I still did not feel satisfied after eating. I was not hungry, but there was a nagging feeling in the back of my mind that told me I was… missing… something.
The first night back felt a little tough to handle. The bed beneath my back was comfortable, but I still could not fall asleep. No matter how much I closed my eyes, sleep just wouldn't come to me.
I did not toss and turn in my bed, but I did not fall asleep either. Even then, I felt refreshed when I woke up the next morning. It was as if nothing had happened.
"Shopkeeper, are you awake? The sun is already up. You should wake up now."
Fenrir came quickly to wake me up, and I pushed him aside before starting to get up. My body felt a little stiff, but beyond that, I was perfectly fine.
"So, what do you want to do today, Fenrir? Should we head out and see this world? I am sure you will like a lot of places this world has to offer."
There were amusement parks and haunted mansions to see. Also, museums and other historic monuments.
I had dreamed of this day—where I would have money and could travel around as much as my heart desired.
But my heart no longer beat faster in excitement when I thought about all this. I just felt a little jaded, almost as if a burden was being lifted off my shoulders.
