The King of Bay Area

Chapter 531: Quick and Clean

A feint, a sidestep, a step forward. The entire sequence flowed seamlessly, a fluid motion. You could hear the air buzzing, like a gushing stream. In an instant, the entire half of the field opened up before him.

Third Second. To his left, he could see cornerback Ike Taylor had abandoned Williams and was leaping toward him. He was less than three yards away, his face magnified. To his right, he could see defensive end Cameron Heyward had also abandoned Joe Staley and was charging at him, but Staley hadn't been easily shaken off and was still tangling with Heyward, slowing down his charge.

Everything was instinctive. He took a step to the left, moving toward Heyward, but Staley was between them. Heyward's fingers were close, but he couldn't hit Lu Ke. Then Lu Ke saw Ike, who had shifted his weight. Without stopping, he lightly jumped like a spring, using the power of his left leg to pull sideways to the right. Ike completely lost his balance and lunged at Heyward and Staley, and the three of them tumbled into a pile.

There was no time to think or hesitate. He took a step forward, his feet and calves pushing hard. He twisted his waist, and his arm completed the power transfer. With a forceful throw, the football flew out like a cannonball, a straight line so fast you could see the traces of air flowing around it. The entire backfield was startled.

"Hike!"

After the snap count, the four receivers sprinted out according to the plan. After half a second, a full second, and then a second and a half, they immediately looked back for Lu Ke's position. While adjusting their steps, they got ready to catch, but in the next moment, they noticed the shattered pocket. The monumental change instantly destroyed all of the 49ers' offensive plans.

They didn't give up. Vernon Davis, Ted Ginn, Kyle Williams, and Logan Newman didn't give up because they knew their quarterback would never give up until he was completely out of options. So, the four of them began to run their routes based on their tactical understanding and their feel for the open space. There was no plan. The four players ran four different routes. Vernon pulled sideways and cut into the middle. Williams made a quick adjustment along the sideline, pushing into the medium pass area and looking for a chance to get into the deep pass area. Ginn used his speed advantage to go straight for the end zone. Logan first went forward, then meandered in the medium pass area. The two cornerbacks and two safeties were in man-to-man coverage, staying alert and not relaxing for a second.

But at that moment, the balance was broken. Lu Ke had broken through Harrison's surefire tackle! In an instant, Ike Taylor, who was defending Kyle Williams, abandoned his receiver and lunged at Lu Ke. Williams immediately smelled an opportunity and suddenly accelerated, pushing toward the end zone. At the same time, Ginn, who was meandering, also started his second burst of speed, maximizing it and storming into the end zone in a flash. Clark, who was responsible for defending Ginn, stuck to him and refused to relax. Polamalu, who was covering Logan, reflexively started running and lunged toward Williams because Williams was about to get into the end zone. With no one defending him, a touchdown was a sure thing.

Vernon seemed to have found an opening and cut horizontally, moving from the left side of the field to the right. William Gay, who was defending him, could only follow Vernon step by step, and they swept past Logan. At that moment, Lu Ke threw the ball!

"Lu Ke! Lu Ke! Lu Ke!"

Everything on the field was too tense and exciting, too dazzling to comment on. Everyone's eyes were fixed on Lu Ke, watching this quarterback survive in the face of a storm. After escaping tackle after tackle, he stepped up and threw the ball.

"Lu Ke! A pass! A bullet pass! The speed, angle, and power finally show the rookie quarterback's excellent form again. His target is... Logan Newman! My God, number 88, Logan Newman! He's undefended! There isn't a single defender around Newman!"

"This is a 15-yard pass in the middle of the field! He jumped lightly and completed the catch! Newman completed the catch without any challenge! He adjusted his steps, turned, and pushed toward the end zone. Clark and Polamalu are trying to provide backup coverage, but it's too late. There's only four yards to go. It's completely too late. Newman has rushed into the end zone! Touchdown! This is a touchdown! My God! Touchdown! The San Francisco 49ers have scored their first touchdown of the game!"

"The suspense is back! The suspense of the game is back!"

"My God, can the game get any more exciting? Facing the Pittsburgh Steelers' blitz tactics, the 49ers were at a complete disadvantage, but Lu Ke chose to actively run out of the pocket, dodged James Harrison's two surefire tackles, and also broke free from Ike Taylor's sack, and finally completed the pass!"

"It's the middle again, the medium pass area again. In this drive, Lu Ke found Ted Ginn and Logan Newman in the same area, tearing open the Pittsburgh Steelers' airtight defense. He gained yards with absolute force, and at the last moment, he found Newman, who was undefended, creating an empty zone and easily running into the end zone to score a touchdown!"

"This is a touchdown, an undeniable touchdown!"

"Beautiful! This is truly beautiful! Touchdown, ladies and gentlemen! The San Francisco 49ers have scored their first touchdown of the game! My God, this is definitely one of the best offensive plays of the week! Touchdown! Touchdown! Number 88, touchdown!"

Jeff Locke couldn't control himself and jumped high into the air. Before he even realized it, a roar had broken free from his throat. "Bambi!" Then he raised his right hand high, hugging everyone around him, shouting selflessly, "Bambi!" Excited and exhilarated eyes exchanged glances, then they roared at each other, "Bambi!"

Such a simple word, such a simple syllable, but it contained all the complex emotions in their hearts at that moment. It was a complete release, scalding and intense, frenzied and passionate. Their whole bodies couldn't help but tremble, but they still couldn't hold back their excitement, only able to frantically roar the same syllable.

"Bambi! Bambi! Bambi!"

The entire Candlestick Park had erupted. The vast red sea began to roar and boil, surging and churning. The chaotic and excited shouts came one after another, and finally converged into a single roar of support, as if as long as they shouted this name, the light of victory would never be extinguished, and the beacon of their spirit would never disappear.

This moment, this passionate, self-forgetful, and roaring moment, was broadcast across the entire North American continent via ESPN's live feed.

Almost everyone had the same question in their minds: What did I just witness? What just happened on the field? How did all of this happen?

But they couldn't calm down to think, because the overwhelming shouts, like a surging river, came through the TV screen in an endless stream. The pure red was so vibrant and scalding that it almost hurt their eyes, and then a sense of irritation began to grow, little by little.

Charles Davis kept telling himself, "It's just one touchdown. It's just one touchdown." But the ubiquitous sound of "Bambi" completely broke all of his self-control. He couldn't hold back anymore. He raised his hand and slammed the remote control against the wall with a crisp "snap." It shattered into a thousand pieces. Even so, his anger was not vented. "F***! F***! F***!" Charles roared at the TV screen like a madman.

Adjust his steps, get in rhythm, and lunge. He had experienced thousands of tackles in training and games and had never missed, but today, Harrison's outstretched arms were like embracing the blue sky and sea at the bottom of a cliff. He only embraced a handful of air, and he completely missed. He lost his balance and staggered, falling down with a heavy thud like a clumsy nesting doll.

Reflexively, Harrison flailed his arms, trying to regain his balance, but the momentum of his charge was too strong, and his target was so close that he overexerted himself. He looked like an idiot who struggled in vain for a moment before falling into the abyss.

"What happened?" This was the only thought in Harrison's mind. He replayed it over and over, but he still couldn't figure it out. Then, in the next second, the entire stadium erupted in cheers. He looked up and saw the scoreboard on the big screen had changed: "6-24." This meant that the San Francisco 49ers had just scored a touchdown. A touchdown! They went all-in on a blitz, and not only did they fail to sack the quarterback, but they also gave up the first touchdown of the game?

"F***!" Harrison's anger instantly spiraled out of control, followed by a wave of humiliation. He stood up, furious, and stared at Lu Ke's back. He saw Lu Ke raise his right index finger, looking at the sea of red with a determined gaze, making a "1" gesture. It seemed to say that this was the first touchdown, or that they would ultimately be the winners, or that this was just the beginning. The game was not over yet, and no one knew who would have the last laugh!
