Reborn As The Barbarian God

Chapter 65: Lady Pelica I

Galthor listened carefully. The more he heard about his father, the former chief, the more impressed he became. The man had managed to do lots of things while having no supernatural powers of his own.

There was simply nothing more impressive than that.

"Your father had dreams, but he was limited by his own physical limitations. What about you, Galthor? It seems you won't be held back by your physical limitation."

Galthor sighed. "What exactly do you want? You knew my father, but that relationship is gone with him. What exactly do you want from me?"

She smiled. "I want to get to know you."

Galthor froze and his eyes widened. "What?"

"I'll be honest with you. The Stronghide are not the only barbarians that are revolutionizing. In fact, in your father's time, your people were among the weakest of the barbarians carrying out revolutions in different parts of the Thirteenth Region.

"And because you were the weakest, you naturally had the lowest backing from the Howling. The different forces that made it up did not see you as worthy enough to invest in."

Galthor was stunned. Maybe it was naivety, but he hadn't really thought about it. He thought his group was the only barbarian faction revolting, but really, how could that be? There were billions of barbarians. How could he and the Stronghide be the only rebellious ones?

It was something he had never given serious thought to. But now, he understood it better. Still, did they have to be the weakest? Just how were the other barbarian revolutions faring?

"You seem surprised," Lady Pelica laughed. "Don't be. The Howling hates the other races because they claim—no, that's not right. The Howling hates divinity because it imposes its will on the world and sees anything that's not part of it as lesser beings."

Galthor looked at her sharply. "You are a human. Humans are beings with hundreds of gods."

"Thousands, if you want to be technical. But just because I am human doesn't mean I have to worship a god, and I shouldn't be seen or treated as less for this fact.

"Besides, it's not that I can't have a god. It's that the god that my line of work serves already perished. I am an enchanter, after all.

"The Howling is made up of those who lack divinity one way or the other."

Galthor stared at her flatly. Since he came to the new world, he knew the Abyssal Land was too small to contain him, and sooner or later, he would be forced to interact with the real Divine World.

In a way, Galthor had been ignoring things. The Revolutionary Base was a bubble he wasn't so willing to pop, but now, things had come to meet him directly.

"What does the Howling have to do with my revolution? With the barbarian revolutions?"

"Because of the Thirteenth Region. The Thirteenth Region represents the only place in the entire world that's not directly under the purview of any god. It's free from any influence directly related to a god."

Galthor's eyes hardened. "And because of us barbarians."

Lady Pelica smiled. "Yes. You barbarians are a major race without any god. We can't talk about oppression of those without gods without mentioning the barbarians. But surprisingly, you have no seat in the Howling. No influence in it either."

Galthor waved his hand. "Don't turn this around. We are talking about us, the reason you came here. Tell me."

She spread her hands. "I want you guys to join the Howling."

Galthor continued to look at her without saying anything.

"Simply put, I want to invest in you, Galthor Stronghide. Every other force in the Howling secretly supports one barbarian faction or another. I was supporting your father before, but not actively. Now, I'm ready to put real support behind you."

Galthor snorted. "You didn't support us before because you didn't see any worth in what my father was doing. What changed now?"

Lady Pelica met his eyes. "I think you know what changed. The god. You now have a god, Galthor Stronghide—at least according to the rumors."

Galthor didn't deny it. The rumors spreading were intentional on his part, and he was ready for their ripples. "Let me get this straight. You want me to join the Howling and support me all because I have a god now? I find that reason very hard to believe."

Lady Pelica leaned forward. "Listen. You might not know this, but the actual place the Supreme Deity perished was here in the Thirteenth Region. He was supposed to be my god. We practiced his way as enchanters, and every enchanter advances by finding legacies or relics relating to him.

"Throughout the years, it's been established that due to him perishing here, the barbarians have a connection to him..." She suddenly blinked and trailed off as if she didn't want to continue that particular line of conversation.

Galthor's eyes narrowed as he felt a chill down his spine. "What are you talking about?"

She took a deep breath. "The barbarians are sometimes used as sacrifices to open ruins and some deep places of the Abyssal Lands here in the Thirteenth Region."

Galthor looked at her in stunned silence. The conversation seemed to be jumping from one place to another, but the recent thing he heard made his head ache. "We're used as sacrifices. And I assume this is open knowledge that's known to all apart from us... the sacrificial meat."

She grimaced. "Right."

The whole room suddenly settled into an awkward silence. Even Karathra and Brakthar couldn't help but glare at the lady.

Galthor remained silent for a while. "And now that our god is back, do you think using me, his Apostle, as a sacrifice would do something spectacular?"

Lady Pelica's eyes widened and she flinched. "Wait! That wasn't what I was thinking of! That's not why I am here... of course, with divine powers, the sacrifices held in the Thirteenth Region would reach a new high, but..."

She took several deep breaths, then shook her head firmly. "No. I am here for another reason entirely."
