Chapter 156: The Devi Jones’s Story

The Devi Jones's Story

After following Chang Long, his precious and beloved heir, for some time, Devi Jones began to reminisce about his youthful days. Kitsune and Chang Long were preparing to sleep after a tiring day of hunting monsters to level up. Devi Jones barged in, issuing an order with utmost firmness:

"Missy, little pup, don't sleep yet. Wake up and listen to me first!"

"What is it, Devi-chan? Can't it wait until tomorrow? I'm exhausted and about to pass out,"

Chang Long replied sleepily, not even bothering to sit up and talk to him.

"Indeed, we've had a long day," Kitsune, in his young man form, supported his master's sentiment, clearly ready for bed.

"No! You must wake up and listen to me now,"

Devi Jones insisted loudly, causing such a ruckus that Chang Long and Kitsune could not sleep. Eventually, they gave in and sat up to listen to the biography of the once-great pirate king.

The former pirate king sat quietly, taking a deep breath before exhaling slowly. He looked seriously at the two unwilling listeners. An image of a small coastal village with a modest fishing port filled their minds. Boats were either docked or returned from the sea with fresh catches. The dock was bustling with fishermen unloading their live fish to sell at the nearby market. The fish market was equally chaotic, with vendors loudly calling for customers and housewives bustling about to buy fish for their meals. Some buyers were merchants purchasing fish in bulk to sell in other villages.

Away from the bustling docks, a narrow alley led to the home of the famous fisherman Dotty Jones. Dotty Jones was renowned for slaying the giant sea beast, the most ferocious sperm whale in these waters, with just a handful of crew members. He and his men dragged the beast's massive body back to the village, making it a landmark event where everyone had witnessed his great success. Though this happened when Dotty was much younger, it remained a legendary tale among fishermen. Dotty's story became a favorite among seafarers, making him a hero to the new generation of fishermen. Dotty was immensely proud and hoped his only son would inherit this respected profession. However, his son had different, rather outrageous dreams in Dotty's eyes—he dreamed of becoming a pirate king!

On a high cliff not far from the village, an eighteen-year-old handsome young man gazed out over the azure sea. His heart had long sailed far beyond the shore, into the realm of imagination. In his mind's eye, he commanded a grand ship as its captain, giving orders to sail to mysterious, wondrous lands. He envisioned daring adventures across the vast seas, facing and conquering countless mysteries and dangers, becoming a legendary figure who commanded respect and awe from all.

"Devi! Hey, Devi, your father is calling for you."

The voice of a peer jolted the young man from his dreams. He turned to look at his friend and nodded slowly. He took one last determined glance at the blue sea before stepping away from the cliff's edge.

Devi was the only son of Dotty Jones, a famous fisherman of their time. His father hoped he would follow in the footsteps of this highly esteemed profession. However, Devi had different dreams. He did not despise being a fisherman—he often went out to sea with his father since he was a child. There was one incident when he fell off his father's boat while everyone was busy catching a big fish. Devi was saved by a beautiful mermaid. In his fading consciousness from lack of air, the mermaid shared her breath with him and took him to a place so wondrous no human could ever imagine it. Since then, he dreamed of going on adventures across the vast world, hoping to meet that mermaid again.

The young man prepared everything he thought necessary for his adventure. Today was the day he planned to leave the peaceful village. Devi did not go home; instead, he walked to an old warehouse that had not been used for a long time. He stored all his equipment there and needed to check everything one last time before setting off.

"What trash are you storing here, Devi!"

A deep voice from behind startled the young man to turn around in shock, as it was a voice he knew very well.

"Father!"

"I told you to give up on these foolish adventures. Going out to sea without knowing it will only lead to a pointless death! And what's that? The boat you're planning to use for your voyage?"

Dotty Jones spoke to his son with a stern yet concerned tone.

"What's wrong with my boat, father?"

Devi Jones retorted, glancing over his vessel. It was a small rowboat, about the size of a lifeboat on a cruise ship, with a mast he built himself using old cotton cloth as the sail. The boat contained a single oar, a bucket for bailing water, and a sack of provisions filled with drinking water and dried food.

"You plan to travel to become the great pirate king with that boat!!"

Dotty roared, feeling frustrated with his son, who still did not grasp the dangers of the sea.

"And your crew?"

"It's just me, father. I'll be both the captain and the crew."

Devi replied with determination, leaving his father speechless.

"You... you've gone mad. Going out to sea alone is suicide. Abandon this foolish idea and come home!"

Dotty shouted at his son. But Devi shook his head, his eyes showing more determination than Dotty had ever seen. Nevertheless, Dotty could not let his only son go off to die at sea. He moved to grab Devi and pull him back, but the young man pulled away and jumped into his boat.

"What do you think you're doing? Get down from that boat right now, Devi Jones!"

Dotty commanded loudly, his face red with anger.

"No! I've made up my mind. Goodbye, Father. I will make my dreams come true,"

Devi said calmly. He used his foot to push the boat away from the shore in the warehouse. Dotty Jones shook with rage. He shouted at his son loudly, making Devi's face turn somber quickly. However, he was determined and had no intention of turning back. Once he decided, he had to see it through.

"If I survive, we'll meet again. By then, I'll be a great pirate for you to be proud of, Father!"

His words echoed through the empty warehouse. Devi could not see his father's face clearly anymore, hoping that one day, his father would be proud of him when he became famous...

"Is that the end of the story?"

Kitsune asked after Devi-chan fell silent.

"Yes,"

Devi-chan responded briefly.

"Huh. What happened next?"

Chang Long asked. Now wide awake, both she and Kitsune insisted Devi-chan continue his story.

"Well, as you know, I became the great pirate king. I was just one step away from becoming the supreme ruler,"

Devi-chan grumbled, his voice filled with regret. He thought he was strong enough, but it was not enough to defeat the other kings.

"That's not enough detail. Keep going, I'm ready to listen!"

Chang Long insisted, hugging her pillow and resting her chin on it, eagerly waiting for Devi-chan to continue.

"I forgot,"

Devi-chan said.

"What? Don't lie, Devi-chan. You were just telling it in detail a moment ago. How can you say you forgot now!"

Chang Long protested. Devi-chan shook his head and muttered softly.

"It's not like I can remember everything just because I want to. I'll tell you more when I remember. I'm done with you for now, so go back to sleep if you want."

"How can I sleep now? You stupid ghost. You're just messing with me!"

Chang Long yelled loudly for a while before finally quieting down. When Devi-chan turned to look, he found that Chang Long had fallen asleep from exhaustion. He shook his head lightly, looking at his quirky heir with a hint of concern in his eyes.

'You'll be greater than I ever was, missy. You'll go further than I, who never had the chance to fulfill my ambitions. You'll carry it forward and make it happen for sure.'

Of course, no one knew what the future held, but Devi felt an unusual confidence in Chang Long. This young girl had qualities beyond what anyone might expect. Though headstrong, eccentric, crazy, and sometimes cold, she was also kind-hearted, intelligent, and resourceful in any situation. He did not believe that their meeting was a mistake. On the contrary, he felt it was destiny that had brought Chang Long to him to fulfill his dream.
