The next class brought a different atmosphere entirely.
Mythic Class.
It was Rosaria's idea that he should take this class if he plans to continue doing missions and most likely encounter Mythic Keys.
Reinhard found himself in a classroom with weapons and objects on a mounted rack, mannequins standing on the side in various armors, and glass-encased trinkets shining with magic.
At the front of the room stood Professor Kali. She had short golden curls with blue-green eyes that surveyed each student who came inside the room. Though she wore the academy's standard black-white uniform, on her, it resembled combat gear with a black cloak.
The students took their seats without the usual shuffling of papers. Here, no one reached for notebooks as all eyes remained fixed on the artifacts surrounding them.
Kali didn't waste time and began speaking. "Mythic Keys come in many different types with many different functions and shapes. But these are generally broken into four categories."
She held up one finger. "The first type is the Support Type."
A second finger joined. "The second type is the Combat Type."
The third finger was raised. "The third type is the Gear Type."
And a Fourth finger was raised. "The last is the Domain Type."
Kali's hand dropped before she moved toward her desk, fingers drumming against the wood surface once before continuing.
"Support Types can be used for magical energy amplification or storage to heal or restore a Beast Master's magic. An example would be the Meno Ring that we professors have."
Kali raised her hand, displaying a white-black ring on her middle finger with a butterfly symbol adorned on its surface. "We can tap into it to have the magic stored within rush into our body and refill our depleted magic volume."
All the students' eyes around the classroom lit up, with most of them leaning in while others sighed in envy.
Whispers began immediately, students leaning toward each other to discuss in hushed tones.
Reinhard's visible eye narrowed slightly while he inwardly sighed and thought. How helpful that would have been in Mensis Town when I wanted to continue attacking Phineas. Or in Phane City, where we wouldn't have been so pressed on conserving magic.
"Next." Kali's voice cut through the whispers, silencing them immediately. "Is the Combat Type of Mythic Keys. These are obviously weapons and armor such as swords, spears, shields, gloves, and so on." She moved toward the weapon racks. "They do not have any flaws or weaknesses, but because of this, they don't have anything extremely exceptional about them either. They're more versatile tools that can fit nearly all situations available."
Kali hand found a massive greatsword, and she lifted it easily, hoisting it one-handed as if it weighed nothing. Her arm moved in practice swings that had the blade hacking, chopping, and slashing through the air.
Then she planted it gently on the floor, and the blade sank into stone as if the material were soft clay rather than solid rock.
"These weapons are made from the bones of Phantasm Beasts and imbued with magic crystals that enhance their strength." Kali's hand remained on the pommel, fingers drumming once against metal. "While they lack abilities or anything that would make them special, they can easily cut through Beast Masters and Phantasm Beasts while defending against their attacks."
She pulled the sword free with the same ease, and she returned it to the rack.
"Next is the Gear Type." Kali moved back to her desk, opening a drawer. "Similar to Combat and Support Types, but Gear Type is a weapon or armor that has an ability supplied by the Beast Master's magic."
Her hand emerged holding a staff.
Golden-green metal twisted in elegant spirals from base to tip with patterns covering its surface. The designs seemed to shift when viewed from different angles, and at the staff's crown, a crystal shine.
Kali twirled it in her hand with the staff spinning like a baton, creating blurs of gold-green as it moved. Then the crystal at its tip began glowing brighter, intensifying until it cast shadows across her face.
She swung gently in a small arc, and just then a terrifying wind erupted.
A gust blasted out, the wind formed a blade of wind that rushed through the air, and cut through the dummy positioned against the far wall.
The impact was devastating despite the gentle swing as the dummy's arm separated cleanly at the shoulder, falling to the floor with a heavy thud.
The wind continued past it, striking the wall before dispersing into nothing.
The students gasped in surprise as some leaned forward in their seats, and others simply stared with mouths open.
"Inside a Gear is the soul of a Phantasm Beast. Depending on which skill the beast recalled the most, the weapon will have that skill." She lowered the staff, the crystal's glow fading back to its dormant state. "But truthfully, what a Gear Type can do depends on the Inquisitor. You can think of a Gear Mythic Key as having an extra Beast Sigil."
She returned the staff to her desk, setting it down with care. Her blue-green eyes swept the classroom, ensuring everyone understood before continuing.
"Now the last type is a Domain Type." Her hands clasped behind her back, posture shifting into something more formal. "They aren't destructive like Gear and Combat, nor pure support like Support Types. Domain focuses on defense and battlefield control to the user's benefit. You can think of these as using our magic to create something or make traps."
She paused for emphasis. "An example would be the Herald Mark, which allows us to tap into others' magic and use their Beast Spirit skills while also enabling long-term communication."
Reinhard felt the shift in atmosphere immediately as countless heads turned toward him. All of the students' eyes bored into his back and his side.
Kali's hands came together in a sharp clap. The sound cracked through the room like thunder, silencing whispers and snapping attention back to the front. "I'm sure you're all wondering, how do I get a Mythic Key?"
She smiled. "Normally, you would need to go to the Tower of Mythic, whose artisans create and sell them. But fortunately, the Academy's Armory Institution buys them and has a storage of them." Her smile widened. "All you need are points to exchange for them! So I hope you all involve yourselves in plenty of events to grow your points, so you too can enjoy a Mythic Key!"
Excitement erupted through the classroom, and the students turned toward each other, discussing possibilities.
Reinhard heard fragments.
"Need at least 500 points-"
"If we do the event-"
"Maybe a Combat Type first-"
Kali let them talk for thirty seconds before clapping again. "Now, let me show you the difference between each type in practical application..."
The lecture continued.
Demonstrations followed with more weapons displayed, more abilities shown, more possibilities revealed.
Each example made the students lean forward further, made their eyes shine brighter with ambition and desire.
The gas lamps flickered again as clouds outside thickened further. Thunder rumbled distantly with a storm approaching, and then after another ten minutes, the storm arrived.
Rain began falling gently at first, then harder and harder. It was drumming against the windows in rhythm that matched his tapping fingers.
