A chill swept through the room.
It was sudden, and came without warning as goosebumps appeared along Reinhard's arms.
His expression became serious instantly. Beside him, Joseph's entire posture became serious as his eyes narrowed.
"The Night Terrors are coming." Joseph said quietly.
Reinhard nodded before moving a chair near the window, the legs scraping softly against wooden floorboards.
He then sat down, leaning forward slightly. "I'm curious about how they look."
Joseph sighed, the sound carrying a mix of resignation and amusement. "You and Marie with your dangerous curiosity. I've been spending too much time around you both." Despite his words, he pulled up another chair and sat beside Reinhard.
They gazed out the window together.
The moon had been bright moments ago, illuminating Naraku in silver light. Now darkness crept across its surface as black clouds began forming above as if it was about to rain. The moonlight dimmed, then disappeared entirely as clouds obscured it completely.
The outside became darker.
Then, a couple of seconds later, rain began falling. Heavy drops began to strike the window, the ground, and the buildings around, producing faint noises.
Reinhard furrowed his brows but said nothing as he continued observing as rumbling sounds echoed through the clouds. When he looked, he saw no lightning flashing or any light illuminating through the cloud.
Only rain and occasional rumbling filled the night. Then Reinhard heard multiple footsteps echoing out and moving in uncoordinated patterns.
There, he saw shadowy figures appearing in the street below. They moved through rain with the water itself drifting down on their form while shadows trailed off their bodies like smoke. Their white eyes shine from where faces should be, providing the only distinct features.
They moved slowly with their heads tilted at odd angles, gazes sweeping the area. Some passed directly beneath the window, white eyes scanning upward.
Reinhard remained perfectly still as the Night Terrors' gazes swept over him without pausing, as if he didn't exist.
Reinhard caressed his chin thoughtfully, and then his eyes widened slightly.
Something fell from the sky.
It landed close to the Night Terrors, perhaps twenty feet from the nearest cluster. The sound echoed through the night while the ground trembled from the crash, sending vibrations through the inn's foundation.
Reinhard felt Joseph's gaze but stayed still, leaning forward slightly to peer through the rain-streaked window.
The Night Terrors paused before as one, and they turned toward the noise source. Their heads tilted in perfect synchronization while their white eyes seemed to narrow.
Reinhard squinted, trying to see through heavy rain, and what had fallen became visible.
There were multiple Bear-Terrors, their massive forms crumpled on the ground. But they were injured as blood flowed from their body and mixed with rainwater. Painful whimpers escaped them as they struggled to move their bodies, attempting to rise.
A greater chill rushed through Reinhard's body.
The Night Terrors' eyes shone brighter before their faces opened.
Not like mouths opening naturally, but it split. The flesh and shadow on its face broke apart to reveal countless black tendrils rising from within. The tendrils swayed from left to right before then pointing towards the Bear-Terrors.
Then the Night Terrors rushed toward the Bear-Terrors.
The Night Terrors moved with speed that contradicted their earlier slow drifting. They covered the distance in seconds, tendrils lashing out first. The Bear-Terrors roared out as they swung their claws while trembling in fear and panic. One released a roar and swiped, its massive paw connecting with a Night Terror's torso.
The shadowy form exploded into fragments, with some of it heading to the ground.
But the fragments reformed as black tendrils instantly began stitching the body back together. Within seconds, there was no hole in the Night Terror, and it simply jumped on the Bear-Terror, who struck it.
The other Night Terrors rushed onto the other Bear-Terror.
Tendrils wrapped around Bear-Terror limbs, pulling them down. Those split faces revealing teeth made of darkness that sank into flesh, and bit down into the beast's fur. While others stabbed their hand through the beast's hide and pierced vital organs.
The Bear-Terrors roared and screamed, their cries echoing through the night, mixing with rain and rumbling.
One Bear-Terror managed to tear a Night Terror completely apart, scattering its form across twenty feet. But even dismembered, the pieces crawled back together, and within seconds, the creature was whole and attacking again.
The last Bear-Terror fell, its roar cutting off abruptly as tendrils wrapped its throat and squeezed.
Blood splashed beneath it, mixing with rain to create dark rivers before the Bear-Terror sagged and fell to the ground.
The Night Terrors then screeched, it was a sound that made Reinhard's skull throb. Then, to his surprise, roots appeared from somewhere beyond his view.
They wrapped around the fallen Bear-Terrors' bodies, coiling around them like rope, and then dragging the bodies away into darkness.
The Night Terrors then began to resume their dazed state. Their faces closed, tendrils retreating while their white eyes dimmed slightly, and they turned slowly, beginning to drift again.
After a minute had passed, they paused before tilting their heads as footsteps began to echo out. It was then that Reinhard could see other Phantasm Beasts rushing through the area.
He saw Werefangs moving on two legs, more Bear-Terrors charging despite injuries, Forest Roots Phantasm Beasts running as the rain ran down their body. Tetans in their wooden armor running with their weapons, Kabas with mushroom shells on their backs, and Kungalas towering above the rest.
All of them were bleeding and rushing through the streets of Naraku.
But their movement led to the Night Terrors' eyes shining, their faces splitting, and then them rushing forward with a screech.
But the ground trembled before they could reach their prey.
Reinhard's eyes widened as he saw the shadows beneath the street tremble before more shadowy creatures rose from the darkness itself. They were larger than the drifting Night Terrors, with multiple black tendrils from their bodies and massive mouths that opened to reveal a void.
They surged toward the Phantasm Beasts, creating a pincer attack.
The Phantasm Beasts felt the Night Terrors and roared, turning to face the threat.
As the Night Terrors got close, a Kungala arm transformed, wood extending and shaping into a massive axe. The weapon came down with devastating force, smashing through three Night Terrors simultaneously. Their forms exploded into shadow fragments, but even as they swung again, the fragments were already reforming.
The Kabas reacted by releasing yellow clouds that spread through the rain. Whatever part of the Night Terrors the spore landed on, the creature would slow down as its movements became sluggish.
Then green roots burst from within their shadowy forms, tearing them apart from inside. The Kabas advanced, and more spores were spreading.
Bear-Terrors released terrifying roars, which displayed a grey sound that froze several Night Terrors.
While the night Terror were stunned, Werefangs reached them as their claws shone with black light, trailing off with black smoke.
They tore into Night Terrors, claws ripping a hole through the Night Terrors' side, their legs, their arms, and even their throats.
While other Werefangs bite into the Night Terrors or grab their limbs before tearing them apart, leading to black substances splashing on the ground.
A Forest Roots Phantasm Beast raised both arms. Roots erupted from the ground beneath Night Terrors, piercing through shadowy forms from below.
The roots continued growing, lifting impaled creatures into the air before slamming them down with bone-crushing force.
