The sound of crashing was followed by them hearing wood splintering, stone breaking, and people shouting in panic.
Reinhard and the others exchanged glances before they stood and rushed toward the door.
They burst outside to see the chaos unfolding.
Chimeras were unleashing havoc throughout the town square.
These abominations created by combining multiple creatures rushed through the area. One had the body of a Bear-Terror with Werefang arms twisted at unnatural angles. Another possessed Autumn Deer legs supporting a Kungala's torso. A third showed Forest Roots Phantasm Beast limbs grafted onto a Tetan's wooden armor.
But what made them truly horrifying were the roots. Thick, pulsing roots wrapped around each Chimera's body, growing from within their flesh.
Some roots burst through skin, creating grotesque decorations, while others coiled around limbs, controlling movement.
The Chimeras were dragging people toward the forest. Their claws had grabbed elderly men and women, pulling them screaming across the ground. One Chimera held a struggling woman in her fifties, roots from its body extending to wrap around her limbs.
Reinhard and the others got ready to move, but then, Brunhilde held up her hand, stopping them. "Stay here."
Her figure blurred.
She moved with speed that made her appear to teleport. One moment standing beside them, the next appearing beside a Chimera, dragging an elderly man. Her fist drove into the creature's midsection, launching the Chimera upward, flying twenty feet into the air.
Its grip on the old man released, and he tumbled safely to the ground.
Brunhilde vanished again before reappearing beside another Chimera, her leg hacking out in a perfect arc.
Her heeled boot connected with the fusion creature's head. It exploded upward, following its companion into the sky.
She moved through the battle like a ghost given form. Each appearance lasted less than a second before a strike happened, and the Chimera was sent flying upwards.
Her movements were casual yet precise, always striking them before they could react and realize they were being hunted.
One by one, the Chimeras were launched skyward before fifteen creatures in total were all rising into the air.
Some tumbled, limbs flailing, and others spun, their fused bodies creating grotesque pinwheels.
Then Brunhilde's body flared with blue light.
The illumination started at her core and spread outward, consuming her entirely. She became a beacon before the light expanded from her position, creating a sphere perhaps thirty feet in diameter.
It rose upward, stretching into a cylinder that reached toward the sky.
The falling Chimeras entered the blue light.
The moment they touched it, their bodies began breaking down. The matter comprising their flesh, bone, and fused parts was being destroyed at a fundamental level. Their cells were being dissolved, tissue evaporating, and bone crumbled to dust.
It took three seconds before the Fifteen Chimeras were completely destroyed, reduced to nothing.
Not even ash remained.
The blue light faded.
Brunhilde stood in the center of the square, perfectly composed, as if what she'd done was nothing more strenuous than taking a walk.
But the roots still remained as sixty of them continued reaching for the fallen townspeople, attempting to complete what the Chimeras had started.
Brunhilde held out her right hand before golden patterns appeared across her skin. They were intricate symbols and word designs that glowed. Her fingers began tracing through the air before her, creating movements that resembled writing but in three dimensions.
Where her fingers passed, golden words appeared. They hung in the air like calligraphy made solid, each character blazing with power.
The first word formed, leading to roots freezing as ice spread across their surfaces. They became fragile before shattering into countless fragments, breaking apart like glass struck by hammers.
Her fingers traced again, and a second word appeared.
Other roots twisted violently, as if grabbed by invisible hands. They compressed, wood groaning under impossible pressure before they were crushed completely, reduced to pulp.
A third word, leading to more turning to ash, starting from their tips and traveling inward. The transformation spread rapidly, with the wood becoming grey dust that scattered in the morning breeze.
A fourth word led to blue flames erupting around a cluster of roots, consuming them instantly as the roots simply ceased to exist.
A fifth word led to several roots bursting from internal pressure, exploding into splinters that rained down harmlessly.
Brunhilde's fingers continued moving, each gesture creating new golden words. Each word triggered different phenomena. Roots froze, shattered, compressed, burned, burst, withered, and disintegrated. Some were pulled into the ground, swallowed by earth, while others simply stopped moving and died from the inside.
Then the battle was over after one minute and forty seconds. Fifteen Chimeras and Sixty roots were destroyed with not a single casualty among the townspeople.
Brunhilde lowered her hand as the golden patterns faded from her skin.
Marie's eyes shone with delight. "So this is just a little bit of a First Class Beast Master's power."
Joseph sighed. "It truly is an eye-opener to really see how terrifying they are."
Reinhard's lips twitched.
He glanced around, taking in the townspeople's reactions. Most stood frozen in shock, staring at Brunhilde like she'd descended from legends. Some whispered prayers of thanks while others simply gaped, unable to process what they'd witnessed.
His eyes found Nigen standing near a collapsed building. The mayor's weathered face showed complete disbelief, his mouth hanging open slightly. Beside him, Janus displayed equal shock, his orange eyes wide.
Amiya stood nearby, showing some shock but also acceptance. She'd probably seen her master Ancestor Vlad's strength; the display was impressive but not entirely outside her frame of reference.
Brunhilde headed toward Reinhard with a beaming smile. Her heeled boots clicked against cobblestones, the only sound in the stunned silence.
Reinhard chuckled. "I have a guess, but did you act to help assure Nigen that Janus and Amiya would be safe as long as you're there?"
Brunhilde giggled, the sound light and cheerful. "Of course not. I just didn't want them to disturb you after you just ate." She paused, her light blue eyes holding warmth. "Besides, it's my job to protect you."
Reinhard smiled. He knew the truth Brunhilde had stepped in to help Janus and Amiya's case while also ending the battle quickly for his benefit.
"Were the words another aspect of your Beast Spirit?" Reinhard asked softly.
"It's my control over Runes. I got it after becoming a First Class Beast Master." Brunhilde says, leading Reinhard's eyes to shine.
I really can't wait till I get my second set. I wonder if it also works on Fenrir as well, or do I need to take a trial for him?
