Beast Spirits and Potential Sigils:
Reinhard: Odin, Fenrir, Angra Mainyu
Marie: Seraphim
Joseph: Lancelot
Below that, he created sections for each Beast Spirit, leaving space to list potential Phantasm Beasts they could hunt and bind as sigils.
Then the real work began.
They divided the books between them and started reading, each person scanning for abilities that would complement their existing powers.
Reinhard opened a thick field guide, its pages yellowed with age, but information still perfectly legible. He flipped through entries methodically, reading descriptions of various Phantasm Beasts, their habitats, their danger ratings, and their documented abilities.
Then something caught his eye, leading him to stop turning with his finger pressed against the page.
Three-Eyed White Eagle.
The illustration showed a magnificent bird with pristine white feathers and three eyes arranged in a triangle pattern on its face. Two of them were where eyes normally appeared, and a third was positioned directly above them on its forehead.
His eyes moved to the ability description.
Weakness Peering: Allows the beast to discern a target's vulnerabilities and weak points in their defenses with uncanny accuracy.
Reinhard's mind immediately began thinking of applications. "This one." He said, drawing Marie and Joseph's attention.
He turned the book so they could see the entry.
Marie hummed thoughtfully, her light-gold eyes scanning the description before lifting to meet Reinhard's gaze. "Would that be a good match for Odin or Fenrir?"
Reinhard sighed, leaning back in his chair, and his fingers drummed against the table as he fell into thought. The chair creaked slightly under his weight shift, and after a minute, he spoke. "Odin might be better. Fenrir already has attacks that can ignore defenses, such as Shatter Paw. And Devour Disks bypass the target body and distort its inside. Overall, Fenrir has multiple abilities that leave enemies defenseless regardless of what protections they have."
He paused, working through tactical scenarios in his mind. "But Odin? Odin relies more on precision and overwhelming force. And with this skill combined with Ragnarok and Shadow Striker?" His voice carried growing enthusiasm. "It would be absolutely deadly. Imagine seeing every weakness in an enemy's defense, then hitting all of them simultaneously with fifteen separate slashes from impossible angles. Or spears of shadow piercing through them."
Joseph nodded while already reaching for his pen. "Then we can mark that down for Odin."
He wrote carefully in his journal: Three-Eyed White Eagle under the Odin section.
Reinhard continued flipping through the field guide, his eyes scanning entries. Pages rustled as he moved through sections covering different regions of Colin Forest.
Then his eyes shone with sudden interest. "This one would be perfect for you, Marie."
Marie immediately scooted her chair closer, peering at the page Reinhard indicated.
Light Snake.
The illustration depicted a serpent that seemed to glow from within, its scales catching and refracting light in impossible ways. It looked less like a physical creature and more like solidified radiance given serpentine form.
Precision: Allows the beast to precisely target a predetermined location. Then manipulate its attacks to strike there with absolute accuracy, regardless of distance or obstacles.
Marie's eyes shone as she studied the creature. She flipped to supplementary pages showing how the ability manifested in combat. The images display the Light Snake's attacks bending around cover, threading through narrow openings, striking vital points with terrifying accuracy.
"Yes!" Marie practically bounced in her seat, platinum hair swaying with her excitement. "This will be amazing! Especially when I'm aiming with Purging Lance, Lament, and my two wings. Sometimes enemies move at the last second, or I miscalculate distance, or obstacles interfere. But with this?" She grinned broadly. "Once I choose the target location, the attack hits there no matter what."
Joseph chuckled at her enthusiasm before writing in his journal: Light Snake under the Seraphim section.
Reinhard continued his methodical search through the books. But before he could get far, Marie's finger came down on the page, stopping his scroll mid-motion.
"Wait." She said, her voice carrying certainty. "This one will be great for Joseph."
She pointed to an entry that Reinhard had been about to pass over.
Raging Bull.
The illustration showed a massive creature with muscles that seemed carved from stone, horns that curved like scimitars, and amber eyes.
Compression: Allows the beast to compress any attack and fire it as a concentrated blast that is three times stronger and more effective.
Joseph's eyes lit up immediately. He leaned over the book, reading the full description with growing excitement. "This will go incredibly well with my elements! I could compress wind into a devastating tornado or gale. Make lightning even more deadly and harder to dodge or turn normal flames into massive infernos."
His mind was clearly racing through applications. "And when I am manipulating the elements of my opponent's attacks. I can compress it, then release it… The combinations would be endless."
Marie nodded with a grin while Joseph quickly grabbed his pen and wrote in his journal: Raging Bull under the Lancelot section.
They fell back into comfortable silence, each person absorbed in research. Pages turned steadily. Occasionally, someone would mark a page with a slip of paper, noting potential alternatives or backup options.
Reinhard's attention snagged on another entry, this one near the back of the field guide in a section covering colonial insects.
Ant Queen.
The illustration showed a large ant with unusual markings and what appeared to be a crown-like growth on its head.
Chain of Command: Allows the user to establish hidden magical connections with those they place their magic upon for communication purposes. Additionally, it enables the sharing of senses and distribution of damage taken across connected individuals.
Reinhard's eyes widened as he processed the implications. "This would be extremely helpful," he said aloud, drawing the others' attention again.
He read the full description aloud, emphasizing the damage-sharing aspect. "Not only can I communicate silently and share what I'm seeing, but I can distribute damage. If I take a hit that would normally injure me badly, I could spread it across multiple connected people to reduce it."
Marie nodded, then giggled. "This would have been so helpful back in Phanes City when you were infiltrating those warehouses! You could have kept us updated in real-time without any risk of being overheard."
Joseph laughed at the memory of that chaotic mission before asking the practical question. "Which Beast Spirit would you bind it to?"
