The Rise of Quetzalcoatl

Chapter 668: Resting (5)

Lucy was calm, her movements measured and precise as she began. "Whenever you're ready," she said softly, her tone encouraging. Ada took a deep breath, then lunged forward, aiming a swing at Lucy's side. Lucy, however, effortlessly parried the strike, barely exerting any force as she deflected the blow.

"Good, but don't rush," Lucy coached, stepping back slightly to give Ada room to regroup. "Remember your form."

Ada nodded quickly, her excitement showing as she took another swing, this time more controlled. Lucy blocked it again, though she could see that Ada was being more mindful of her movements. "Better. Now try again, but stay focused on both offense and defense."

Ada attacked again, her strikes more varied this time. She swung high, then low, trying to keep Lucy on her toes, but Lucy moved with such fluid grace that each of Ada's swings was blocked with ease. Despite Lucy's dominance, she continued to guide Ada, offering words of advice after each exchange.

"Don't forget to use your footwork, Ada," Lucy said, as she danced lightly out of the way of an attack. "Your sword is just an extension of your body—let it flow naturally."

Ada grunted, adjusting her stance as she took another swing, this time aiming for Lucy's midsection. Lucy parried the strike, then quickly sidestepped Ada's follow-up attack, her movements effortless.

"Good! Keep your balance. Don't overextend," Lucy encouraged, tapping Ada's sword with her own to correct her grip.

The two continued to spar, Lucy taking it slow and gentle, but never failing to challenge Ada's growing skills. Ada's strikes were getting sharper, her movements more deliberate. She wasn't just wildly swinging anymore—she was thinking, adapting, even trying to anticipate where Lucy would move next.

But Lucy's mastery of close combat was on full display, her calm demeanor and swift reflexes making it clear how experienced she was. She dodged and blocked with ease, but every time she saw a flicker of improvement in Ada, she praised her daughter, stoking the fire within her.

"Nice one!" Lucy said as Ada managed to land a light tap on her arm. "That's what I'm talking about."

Ada's face lit up with joy at the small victory, but Lucy wasn't about to let her get too comfortable. "Alright, let's see what else you've got!"

Ada grinned and lunged again, this time adding more fluidity to her movements, trying to keep Lucy guessing. Lucy met her with a controlled block, then swept her own sword low, gently tapping Ada's leg to show her an opening.

"Careful! Don't leave your legs exposed," Lucy teased with a smile.

The two continued to spar, with Lucy occasionally correcting Ada's stance or showing her how to better control her swings. Each time Ada learned something new, Lucy could see her daughter's confidence grow.

Mia, standing on the sidelines now, watched with pride in her eyes. She saw how Ada was soaking up the lessons from both of them, her daughter's passion for swordsmanship growing with every swing.

"Stay focused, Ada," Lucy reminded as she blocked another strike. "You're getting better, but don't lose yourself in the excitement."

Ada nodded, biting her lip as she concentrated. Her next attack was more deliberate, her movements slower, but more precise. Lucy smiled at the improvement and offered a small nod of approval.

"That's it, Ada. Now you're starting to understand."

The sparring session carried on for a few more minutes, with Lucy gradually increasing the difficulty, pushing Ada to improve without overwhelming her. By the end, Ada was panting heavily, her limbs shaking from the effort, but her eyes were glowing with excitement and pride.

Lucy lowered her sword, a satisfied smile on her face. "You did amazing, Ada. You're getting stronger with every swing."

Ada beamed, her face red with exhaustion but filled with joy. She ran over to Lucy, wrapping her arms around her mother in a tight hug. "Thanks, Mom!"

Lucy hugged her back, her heart swelling with pride. "You're going to be a great swordswoman one day."

After the first sparring session, Ada was catching her breath, wiping sweat from her brow with the back of her hand. But even though she was tired, the determination in her eyes hadn't faded one bit. She was ready for more, and Lucy could sense it.

"Alright, Ada," Lucy said, stepping back and flipping the training sword in her hand. "You've gotten better up close, but how do you think you'd do against someone who fights from a distance?"

Ada's eyes widened with excitement and curiosity. She had only ever sparred in hand-to-hand or melee combat before, and the thought of facing someone who could use ranged magic was both thrilling and a bit intimidating.

"I'm ready!" Ada said, straightening her stance and gripping her sword tightly.

Lucy smiled. "Good. Because this time, I'm going to mix things up a bit." She lifted her hand, and with a wave, a gust of icy wind swirled around her. The air around them chilled slightly, and a faint mist rose from the dirt beneath her feet.

"I'll use some of my ice magic from a distance, and your job is to figure out how to close the gap and deal with me before I overwhelm you. Got it?"

Ada nodded eagerly. Her grip tightened around the hilt of her sword, her eyes narrowing in focus.

Mia stood off to the side, watching with an approving smile, her arms crossed as she observed her daughter and partner.

Lucy began by conjuring a series of small ice shards in her palm, their tips gleaming in the light. She hurled them toward Ada in quick succession, giving her daughter a taste of what it was like to face a mage in battle. The shards flew fast, but Lucy held back their full speed to give Ada a chance to react.

Ada's instincts kicked in. She raised her sword with confidence to block the first shard, the ice breaking into pieces as it collided with the wooden blade. The second shard grazed her arm, and the third she dodged with a swift sidestep. Ada bit her lip, realizing this was different from anything she had faced before.

Lucy kept her distance, backing up as she sent more shards Ada's way. "You have to close the distance," she called out. "A swordsman's strength is up close, so find a way to get to me before I wear you down."

Ada nodded, taking the advice to heart. She started moving, weaving left and right, trying to get closer to her mother while dodging the ice projectiles. It wasn't easy—Lucy was fast, her magic relentless. But Ada was determined. She kept her sword at the ready, using it to deflect the shards that came too close while keeping her feet moving.

"Good! Stay light on your feet!" Lucy called out, sending a sweeping arc of frost across the ground toward Ada. The frost crackled as it spread, creating a slick surface beneath Ada's feet.

Ada slipped for a moment, nearly losing her balance, but she quickly adjusted, hopping to the side before the ice could catch her. She was getting closer now, and Lucy could see the fire in her daughter's eyes.

Lucy conjured a thin, sharp spear of ice and hurled it toward Ada, who dodged just in time. The spear embedded itself into the dirt behind her, the cold radiating from it.

"You're almost there!" Lucy encouraged, stepping back again and preparing another barrage of ice shards. "Don't stop moving, and keep your eyes on me."

Ada pushed forward, her breathing heavy but focused. She was almost within striking distance now. Lucy sent another wave of shards, but this time, Ada was ready. She swung her sword in a wide arc, deflecting the shards with a burst of confidence.

With a powerful lunge, Ada surged forward, closing the final gap between them. She raised her sword, aiming for Lucy's midsection.

But Lucy, quick as ever, sidestepped the attack. "Not so fast," she teased, creating a thin wall of ice between them. Ada skidded to a stop, her sword slicing into the ice, but not breaking through completely.

"Good attempt," Lucy said, smiling as she dissolved the ice wall. "But remember, you have to be unpredictable when facing a mage. Don't just charge straight in."

Ada, her face flushed from the effort, nodded. "I understand," she said, gripping her sword tightly once more.

Lucy raised her hand, summoning another volley of ice shards. "Let's go again. This time, don't be afraid to mix up your approach."

The fight resumed, with Ada dodging and blocking as Lucy continued to hurl icy projectiles from a distance. But this time, Ada varied her movements, darting to the side, zigzagging, and making feints to throw Lucy off balance.

The next time Ada closed the gap, she didn't go for a straight attack. Instead, she faked a high strike, then quickly ducked low, sweeping her sword at Lucy's legs.

Lucy was impressed. She jumped back just in time to avoid the swing, but she couldn't help but smile at how Ada was improving, adapting to the challenge of fighting against magic.

"That's it!" Lucy praised, backing up again and sending another frosty blast toward her daughter. But Ada wasn't deterred. She kept advancing, each step more confident than the last.

Soon, she was close enough again, and this time, she moved with precision. Ada swung her sword with controlled, deliberate strikes, aiming for Lucy's sides. Lucy blocked and parried with ease, but she could see that Ada's movements were much sharper now—each strike more calculated than the last.

Finally, with one last push, Ada managed to tap Lucy's side with the flat of her blade.

"I got you!" Ada exclaimed, her face glowing with triumph.

Lucy laughed softly, lowering her sword. "You sure did, Ada. That was amazing."

Ada's chest heaved with the effort, but her eyes sparkled with joy. She had faced down her mother's magic and found a way to win.

"You're getting stronger every time," Lucy said, placing a hand on Ada's shoulder. "Keep practicing, and one day, no mage will stand a chance against you."

Mia, who had been watching the whole time, clapped her hands in applause. "That was incredible, Ada! You're a natural."

Ada beamed, the pride swelling in her chest. With both of her mothers teaching her, she knew she was only going to get better.
