Later that night after sending Axel to his room, Modret decided to take a casual stroll around to take in the surroundings.
Axel didn't know the caliber of treasure they had used to leave the endless abyss, however Modret was aware.
Since the fairy wasn't responding to his call he wanted to be certain that he hadn't been transported to a different timeline.
He walked down the casual streets, the lights streaming down from a few light bulbs connected onto wires as he occasionally took in the sight.
Everything was as he remembered, and after walking for a while Modret finally, fully confirmed that this was truly their world.
Letting out a breath, he was about to head back to the inn when he heard a voice…
It sounded like a slight scream piercing through the night sky and Modret couldn't help but be curious about what was happening.
He hesitated for an instant before briskly rushing in the location of the shout. His movements were a blur as he appeared instantly at the location.
Peering from the sidelines, he saw three men encircling a lady.
In front of the lady was a little girl, her body trembling as she pointed at the men, glaring at them as she reprimanded.
"You– what are you trying to do with her? I'm warning you, my sister, Celine has an inn here and knows many high standing officials, if you try anything funny to her don't blame my sister for being ruthless."
One of the three men let out a sigh then said, "little girl, you won't understand how we are feeling. If we don't satisfy ourselves with this lady we might lose our lives, just let us play with her for a little bit."
"Why do we have to deal with this little girl? She is fair and tender, let's have fun with her as well…"
"You!" The little girl's small frame trembled repeatedly and a dumbfounded expression appeared on her face.
Staring intently at the expression on the faces of the men it was pretty obvious that they were considering the thought.
Modret stared at the scene playing out, the lady behind the little girl clutched her body in fear.
Her clothes were torn and her body was exposed, it was obvious that they were about to violate her when the little girl came timely to save her.
Modret frowned briefly then glanced back at the men. At this point they were already approaching the little girl, their wide grin making them look manic.
'Men who can't control their impulsive emotions.' Modret snorted internally.
A small black petal condensed beside him and casually drifted as though being carried by the night's breeze.
Before the men could realise what was happening the flame swept by.
The little girl took a step back in horror.
One moment three men were approaching her, the next moment, they turned into ashes drifting into the night's wind.
The pale moon hanging in the sky cast its soft glow on Modret's handsome face as he stepped out from behind the sidelines.
"Thankfully I'm not late." he offered the little girl a warm smile.
The little girl stepped back once more, then recognised Modret's figure, "you–young mister…"
At the same time, the lady lying on the ground frantically scampered and ran out of the alleyway.
The little girl glanced at her briefly then bowed politely, "tha–thank you for saving my life," it was obvious that she was still not used to Modret's presence.
"It's nothing. What are you doing out here?" he casually brushed it aside.
The little girl let out a sigh, her nerves relaxing before she finally relaxed, she raised a cute eye to stare at Modret before replying.
"I… uh, usually come out late at night to… stare at the stars…"
Modret could sense the embarrassment in her voice as she spoke.
"Staring at the stars?" he glanced up at the dark skies, there were a few stars lining up the skies, however they were too distant for one to make it out…
"Uh, sister said that when mother and father died they became stars and have been protecting us ever since… i stare at the stars and… have a few casual chats with my parents."
"Oh," Modret nodded in understanding.
The little girl's face flushed in embarrassment, she wished she could find a hole and bury herself inside.
Lightly tiptoeing away as Modret was staring at the stars, she was about to finally escape when Modret's voice resounded once more.
"Do you want to take a closer look at the stars?"
"What?"
"Do you want to take a closer look at the stars?" Modret repeated himself.
The little girl widened her eyes, dumbfounded.
"That is possible? I've heard of awakened abilities, and i have faint guesses that there are those with flight ability, but… it's not possible to fly that high right?"
Modret chuckled, "your line of thought is not wrong. However there is still so much about this world that you don't know…"
Even he was only beginning to explore the depths of the mystery hidden within this world.
Lightning crackled around his body condensing purple wings with golden engravings…
"Do you want me to repeat myself?"
The little girl's mouth fell open, drool slipping out as she muttered, "an—an angel!"
She nodded frantically and the next moment she felt her vision shift instantly.
"What?" the little girl exclaimed aloud as she realised that around her were drifting clouds…
"This…" her heart was beating erratically in fear, and finally… excitement.
"This is amazing!!!" Angel had never felt so much joy in her life.
Her loud, cheerful voice erupted into the clouds and with a triumphant smile she stared up at the distant skies.
The stars were now larger, but she could feel herself drawing nearer to them at blinding speed.
She was atop Modret's back so her movements were barely restricted since he had her firmly wrapped by the shadow puppet strings.
Angel stretched her hands reaching out towards the distant skies, "mother… father..."
Tears appeared at the corner of her eyes and began falling endlessly into the clouds, it seemed like a fairy was crying, sobbing as though she was mourning the loss of her lovely, precious treasure.
Modret noticed this and sighed, flapping his wings and increasing their height, the stars were finally looking full, and they had already drifted past the clouds.
Now there were not much clouds around them, and Modret could feel as though he had appeared at a particularly unique place.
Aside from that, the mana here was vastly higher than that in the lower part of the earth.
Modret glanced around, multicolored lights drifted around creating a serene, beautiful scenery.
Even he was amazed not to talk of the little girl.
"Wow…" she instantly stopped crying and Modret reduced his speed drastically.
She trailed her hand through the multicolored lights feeling a particular warmth emanating from them.
Modret couldn't help reaching out as well, feeling the mysterious essence.
He continued drifting forward but just as he did he felt his speed plummeting sharply.
He frowned and retreated instantly, 'i cant go past this?' Modret realised.
'It seem that even here there are secrets…' he let out a breath then turned around and continued quietly flapping his wings moving through the beautiful scenery.
As though thinking of something he turned around abruptly letting the girl fall down plummeting sharply towards the ground.
"Yooooouuuuunnnnggggg…. Miiiiissssttteeeerrrrr!!!" the little girl let out an exaggerated scream filled with horror.
Modret laughed feeling the shadow puppet string still connecting them, then flapped his wings racing in her direction.
A few seconds of her falling passed before she felt herself land on a firm surface.
'This…' the little girl opened her eyes to see the beautiful purple wings.
Modret could feel the little girl's heart thundering loudly…
He smiled… "you liked it?"
The little girl was stumped by the question, then recalling that feeling of freedom and endless happiness she nodded vehemently, "throw me again…"
"Alright," Modret didn't hesitate to turn letting the little girl fall eliciting a loud scream from her once more.
A happy smile touched Modret's lips.
Putting himself aside from all the troubles and worries of this world, this was the first time he truly felt happy…
...
A/N: this is a normal chapter to show Modret's human side, as of late I've been feeling he's showing less and less emotions.
