Chapter 103 – Flames of Vengeance

Lumi flew high and fast putting itself in front on Eric and Matthew who were running into the burning garage to save Vanessa from the flames. The Ice Phoenix instantly doused the fire with a flap of her wings and a blow of cold mana over the structure.

Not a moment later, it flew inside and carried out the unconscious body of Vanessa taking her to Paula to be healed.

When Paula started to cast healing, Eric and Matthew saw a group of 20 people in front of the house. All carrying weapons, from swords and spears to automatic rifles and one person with a bazooka. That last one was about to reload after blowing up the garage.

"Michael!" Eric screamed. "Take Katia away from here. Paula keep healing Vanessa. Matthew, with me!" He ordered running forward to stop the men in front of him.

Matthew ran close behind, while Michael took Katia on his arms and jumped the backyard fence with her taking the child to safety.

They had no idea who those people were, most likely members of the Howling Spear who found out that Vanessa was the one who gave all evidence against them to the police. Even if they weren't, it didn't matter. Eric was furious about having his house blown up and much more for them harming Vanessa.

He ignored the first men who tried to stop him and just dodged them aiming for the one armed with the bazooka. Matthew helped him with his gun giving the burly man cover from the ones who tried to approach him. Ffyr was also close and sent a curtain of fire to also give cover to Eric.

Eric had a skill much similar to Matthew's new Reckless Agility. It was called Reckless Strength. It worked the same way, but instead of Agility, it traded Vitality for Strength. Eric also had it at level B, while Matthew was level E. Meaning it was much more effective for Eric than Matthew.

Eric's Strength stat was 113, his Vitality 76. Trading 50 points of Vitality with his Reckless Strength at level B gave him a total of 250 Strength. He was unarmed however, but that didn't mean much for his enemies. A punch more than 10 times at the Strength Matthew had, 25 times stronger than the stronger non awakened human, did not hit just like a truck. It hit like a missile.

The man with the bazooka couldn't even process the pain. A punch on his chest sent him flying with enough force to cut the tree he was sent into in half. His body was mangled and almost tore in half as well. Even if he was an adventurer, his Vital Shield did nothing to help him. The man was clearly dead.

The assailants around Eric didn't give him time to react. The came onto him with their weapons circling the man and trying to kill him. Eric, however, was a great close quarter fighter. He managed to dodge or parry most the attacks against him and, with another well timed punch, another one of the men flew away falling dead on the ground.

Matthew and Ffyr weren't far behind him. Matthew was already covered with demonic mana and unholy mana. Ffyr was glowing bright red as well. The fairy's fireballs kept the men armed with guns and rifles distracted, while Matthew shot at them bringing to the ground with a gun in each hand.

They were not powerful adventurers at all. Other than their number, those men posed no threat to them. They were at most level 10 or less.

When Eric killed a third man driving his fist through the guy's chest like an old video game trope, they realized they could not win. They soon started to run away.

But Eric, much like Matthew, was possessed with anger. He took the spear of the man he just killed and, using his unparalleled strength, he threw it faster than a bullet killing yet another men who was running away.

Matthew didn't kill anybody. His bullets maimed a lot of them and Ffyr's fire burned a lot more. But they were all running away alive.

"You will not escape!" Matthew screamed while giving chase to the thick of the fleeing herd.

Eric, instead of reigning in on Matthew, decided to join him in the chase.

They didn't get far before a fireball shot in their direction and blew a huge crater on the street. Eric and Matthew managed to dodge it, but not without some debris injuring them slightly.

They looked to the far end on the street. A Japanese woman with long black hair dyed with gold bangs, blue eyes from contact lenses and fake tanned skin was waiting for them. Both her hands were covered in fire. She was wearing a white blouse opened just enough to show the top of a jaguar colored bra that held her huge breast up. She also wore skinny jeans and black boots. Covering it all, she had a red long coat.

Matthew recognized her immediately. The gyaru style really imprinted her on his memory from when he saw her on the news. That was Yuki Takeda, the Howling Spear's Vice Leader. She was supposed to be in jail.

From what he heard about her, she was supposed to be above level 30. Eric was level 27 and Matthew himself was close to being level 35 adding his own level with the demonic mana and the unholy mana bonuses.

Even though his stat boost with both types of mana was great, his skills were not that high, which made him really inefficient when compared to an adventurer who was actually that level high.

"That's Yuki." Matthew said to Eric. "From Howling Spear. I thought she was arrested."

"It took quite a lot of money, but I'm out on bail." Yuki explained getting closer to them.

Matthew got ready to shoot her, but hesitated since she was just standing still there.

"Is the bitch dead?" Yuki asked with an ornery look on her face.

"You'll not kill her." Eric said kneeling on the floor and grabbing a stone.

"Then I'll kill you two first." She said.

Matthew shot her as soon as she said those words, but his bullets stopped in front of her when hitting a mana shield she moved freely on the air with her mind.

Eric threw the stone as hard as he could. It shattered the mana shield she had, but stopped just shy from her skin. Her whole body was covered in solid mana increasing her natural defense on top of her Vital Shield.

"You brute types are always so predictable. With all the power of magic on your hands, you prefer to resort to brutish tactics. Let me show you the difference between mind and brawl." Yuki said sneering at them.

Hundreds of fire spears appeared behind her and flew at them like bullets coming out of a Gatling Gun. Eric deactivated his Reckless Strength skill to be able to support being hit by those projectiles.

She was putting them both in the defensive even though their levels and stats should not be that far appart.

Matthew got a shot in now and then, but he was too focused on dodging the onslaught of fire spears to be able to get a clean hit. He was also being kept at a distance and the miasma coming out from him was not reaching her. Therefore he was only harming himself with it.

Eric was also in a pinch. He had no armor or weapon with him. He was forced to rely on improvised weapons he got from the debris around them.

His neighborhood was also not intact by the attack. Fire started to spread through the front lawn of the houses and even some of the residences started to caught on fire.

The police was called, but the high level adventurer response unit took a while to sortie.

Matthew and Eric were in trouble.

It was then that Matthew saw Ffyr. She sneaked behind Yuki who was too focused on the two men in front of her to notice the small elf flying casually behind her.

Ffyr concentrated a powerful wind blast aiming to push the Pyromancer to Eric. Mage types were usually weak in regards to their Strength and Vitality stats. This was true for Yuki as well. Ffyr's wind blast made the woman fly forward in Eric's direction who didn't waste the opportunity.

Even though Eric was not using his Reckless Strength anymore, his stat was still 113. When Yuki flew towards him, he extended his arm to the side and ran towards her hitting her on the throat with a wrestling lariat maneuver.

Yuki's Vitality was only 32. Her HP was only 42. Even with her mana armor around her giving her an extra layer of protection, that hit was strong enough to make her spin in mid air and fall to the ground unconscious.

Eric's feet then hovered over Yuki's head. Matthew and Ffyr, both overwhelmed by demonic mana said in unison:

"Dot it."

Eric hesitated for just a second. It was enough time for Lumi to fly in and pull him back by his shirt.

"That's enough!" Vanessa screamed. "I'm ok."
