Douglas cowered in fear and tried to hide himself behind Vanessa as soon as his mother appeared in the sky. There was the Mayor. A blonde long haired woman in her late 50s wearing a silver suit of armor that revealed a large portion of her ample chest. An armor made for fashion rather than utility.
She, like her son, had blue eyes. From her back, a giant pair of dark red bat wings sprouted and flapped strongly making her fly. Covering the armor on her legs, she had a long slit black skirt. She was wearing gold earrings that were obviously magical. On her head, she used a silver tiara adorned with small ruby bat wings just above her ears.
"That's the Mayor?" Matthew asked to Vanessa. "I didn't know she was an awakened."
"Neither did I. I don't think she ever made it public." Vanessa said.
"There's our Warlock?" Mara asked Vasconcelos. "Can't believe it's the Mayor herself."
"I can't get a reading out of her." Vasconcelos said fiddling his googles trying to use the Identify skill through them.
"I guess it's obvious now that she's behind this." Major Job said checking his gun.
"We're surrounded." Faynn noted.
The Mayor descended from the sky slowly landing in front of the squad. She then took a good look to each and everyone of them. When she saw Vanessa, she opened a huge smile on her face.
"That's just perfect." The Mayor said. "The whore who put all of this in action came to me." She laughed wickedly.
"Put all of this in action?" Vanessa asked in indignation.
"Yes! You are the one who ruined everything. You and little schemes to bring us down." The Mayor hissed at Vanessa.
"Do you have any idea how many people you…" Vanessa started to argue but changed her mind mid sentence. "You know what? It doesn't matter. You're just a power hungry old woman aren't you? You lost your mind when you realized you were going to get arrested and brought hell into Earth."
"Shut up." The mayor hissed at her. "You left me no choice. And now… Now you have my son."
"Don't let her get me." Douglas pleaded to Vanessa on the ground. "I don't like when she's with me."
"Come now boy. You mother is waiting. Come to me." The Mayor said extending her hand to Douglas.
"Are you the one keeping the gate open?" Major Job interrupted her.
"Oh…" She looked at him as if finally noticing there were other people there. "Little soldier. I am not. The gate is the work of my husband." The Mayor laughs.
"And where is he?" Job asked pointing his rifle at her.
"He's in there." She said pointing up. "In Violentia. He cannot come to Earth easily. So he's still in there. We just need a little more time and he'll be here soon."
"Who's your husband?" The Major asked still pointing the gun at her.
"Beleth." The Mayor said with a smile on her face and lifting her hand showing a huge silver ring on her middle finger.
"My god." Mara makes the sign of the cross when she hears the name, but no one else reacts to it.
"Who is, Mara?" Matthew asks her.
"Beleth is a king of Hell. The white rider. Conquest." She trembles saying that.
The Mayor laughs loudly as Mara explains.
"He'll be here soon." The Mayor said taking a step forward. "You made me do this." She adds looking at Vanessa.
"Was it you that opened the gate at Saint Helen's Hospital?" Matthew asked putting himself in front of Vanessa.
"That? No. I don't know who did that." The Mayor answered. "It doesn't matter now, does it? You all are going to die." She said pointing to all the demons sitting on the stands around them. "Now. Give me my boy and I'll make it fast for you."
At that point, Matthew took off his eye patch. Faralynn almost stopped him, but it was clear they had no choice. There were at least 20 Balors on the stands. And the Mayor herself seemed really strong. The had no choice.
"Faynn. Take Lynn and Vanessa with you when you can run." Matthew said as his left eye started to shine with red mana.
"You're going to fight me, kid?" The Mayor asked laughing. "Can't you see where you are?"
Matthew didn't answer. He just drew his gun and shot at her emptying the clip.
The Mayor quickly erected a wall of solid fire that took all the bullets from Matthew's weapon. She ground her teeth saying:
"Are you mad?!"
Before she could say anything else, Matthew suddenly was over her using his Reckless Agility skill to move at incredible speed. A trail made of miasma was all she could see.
Matthew sword came down upon her hitting her head with force sending her flying backwards. A stream of blood came down from where he hit her.
"You bloody kid." The Mayor cursed. Then she opened her wings and pointed at the soldiers. "Attack!" She screamed.
However, no demon moved. They were all screaming and playing around watching the events unfold on the arena. When she ordered an attacked, they all laughed.
"Guess you can't count with the fidelity of demons." Matthew said loading his gun. "Don't interfere!" He screamed to the soldiers at his back. "They want a show. If it's just the two of us, the demons won't attack." Matthew added.
"How do you know that?" Vanessa asked him.
"I'll explain later." Matthew said shooting his gun again while the Mayor flew high dodging the blue flame bullets.
"You bunch of useless shit!" The Mayor screamed. "Your queen is ordering you!"
That took another round of laughter from the demons on the stands.
"Ffyr, can you make me fly?" Matthew asked his familiar telepathically.
"Not well, but yes." She answered.
"We'll go after her." He said shooting at the Mayor flying in the sky again.
The Mayor groaned in anger dodging the bullets again. Her eyes became red like Matthew's left one and then she conjured spears made of fire and made them rain down on him.
Ffyr used her wind magic to lift Matthew from the floor. It wasn't gracious nor subtle. It was more like she was pushing him side to side making him dodge the fire spears while also throwing him up in the sky.
The demons cheered watching the battle evolve into an air show. Matthew shot his gun and the Mayor responded with flaming spears and fireballs.
When a stray shot from either of them hit the stands, the demons cheered even louder laughing at the lesser demons who died from the strays.
"He looks like a rag doll!" One demon screamed in laughter watching how Matthew flied around.
The soldiers deployed mana shields above them to shield themselves from the fiery display.
"Call in an airstrike. Level the Arena." Major Job ordered his man responsible for the communication.
"But sir. What about us?" The soldier asked.
"We're already dead. But Matthew is buying us time. We can end this here. Do it." The Major ordered again.
"They all seem pretty focused on the fight." Faynn noted. "We might be able to sneak away."
"This means leaving Matthew to die here alone." Vasconcelos protested. Clearly having changed his mind about him.
"Trust him." Faralynn said. "He'll survive. He always does." She hoped.
When Ffyr managed to get Matthew close enough to the Mayor in the sky he used his sword to deal another blow to her sending her flying downwards and hitting the ground with force.
The air above the arena was now covered in miasma from Matthew flying around chasing the woman.
"How come you're so strong!" The Mayor screamed at him throwing a barrage of fireballs at him. "I have demon mana in me!"
Ffyr sent Matthew flying at full speed towards her while he used his sword to slash at her.
The Mayor created a firewall to stop him, but the strength of his blow shattered her defense making her fly and hit the remains of one of the helicopters.
"Me too." He said walking towards her.
"Die! Die! Die!" The Mayor screamed throwing hundreds of fireballs at him that Matthew dodged masterfully due to his increased Agility.
When he got close enough, he punched her on the gut taking all the air from her lungs.
The demons cheered loudly at that.
"Rape her!" Some of them chanted.
"Take off her head!" Others screamed.
Matthew pulled her by the hair bringing her closer to to one side of the stands and screamed to all the demons while she made her kneel in front of him.
"What do you want?!"
While the demons all screamed different things, some fights started to happen in the stands between the demons when conflicting wishes made them resent each other. They were all now too enthralled by the spectacle Matthew was giving them.
"That's our chance." Faynn said covering them in darkness and running outside the stadium with all the soldiers.
"He will be alright." Faralynn said to herself looking back to him one last time.
Deep down, she thought this was the last time she would see him and that brought tears to her eyes.
