"You're up early." Sarah said after seeing her brother well dressed on an early Saturday morning. He was sitting at the table with an empty plate in front of him. "Want some milk?" She said opening the fridge and grabbing a carton of milk.
"No, I already ate." Matthew answered her picking up his backpack from the kitchen floor.
"You don't look like you're going to a dungeon. Another date? Who is this time?" Sarah was acid.
"It's not a date. Lynn is helping me translate a scroll." He defended himself.
"Wait. It's Lynn?" Sarah asked with a smile. "Are you finally going on a date with her?"
"Sarah…" Matthew said shaking his head in disapproval.
"Don't Sarah me. I just don't like seeing you leading her on like that. You need to make your mind." She admonished him.
"If I could…" Matthew tried to defend himself, but stopped. "Look, it's none of your business." He got up from the kitchen table annoyed.
Sarah just sighed and sat down serving herself with a bowl of cereal and milk.
"Ok. I won't pry anymore. But don't hurt them, Matt. They're nice girls." She conceded.
"What makes you think I'll hurt them?" Matthew protested.
"Do I really need to say?" Sarah raised an eyebrow.
"No." Matthew dismissed her avoiding her eyes. "Just… Let me be, ok? I'll figure things out with time." He said quickly leaving the kitchen and the house as if he was running away from that conversation.
Faralynn was already at the library when Matthew arrived. He found her at a private study room reading a book. He apologized for being late to which Faralynn just looked at her watch and obviously feigned surprise.
"I didn't even notice." She said.
"Lynn. You're a terrible liar. You don't need to pretend." Matthew laughed at her.
"Sorry. I didn't want you to feel bad." Faralynn said putting her book down.
"No. I'm the one who is late. I'm the one who should be saying sorry." He insisted and sat down beside her. "What were you reading?" Matthew changed subjects.
"Just a book." Faralynn said with a light blush.
Matthew took a peek on the title. Pride and Prejudice, a romance by Jane Austen. Then he looked at how Faralynn fidgeted on the chair. It was obvious she didn't want him to know she was reading such a romantic book.
"I see." He said giving her space.
"So. Why did you call me?" Faralynn changed subjects.
"Oh. This." Matthew said taking out the scroll Firynn gave him. "It's from Master Firynn's sister. It's supposed to help me use the Animal Companion skill."
"From Illyzan?" Faralynn asked rhetorically. "I never met her, but they say she's as powerful as Firynn." She added.
"She wrote this, but it's in elvish and I couldn't translate at all with the app." Matthew said showing Faralynn the contents of the scroll.
Faralynn started to read in silence. The silence in the room making both of them become acutely aware of their proximity. Matthew caught himself studying Faralynn's face, focusing on her purple eyes that moved from word to word on the papyrus.
She was wearing a tight jeans pants and a white crop top under a black cardigan. She had silver ball earrings with small amethyst stones and a silver necklace with her family leaf made of jade on it.
Matthew found himself lost mindlessly admiring her beauty.
Faralynn was starting to feel his gaze burning her skin. That made her feel self conscious and fix the cardigan around her shoulders. Matthew's perfume was filling the small study room making her lose concentration and forcing her to read the same paragraph again and again.
"I didn't know you wore perfume." Faralynn commented after the cinnamon smell got too strong to ignore.
"I usually don't." Matthew explained. "But today we're going to Helen's house, so I thought I should. Why? Is it bad?"
"No! It's really good!" Faralynn said and immediately widened her eyes after realizing what she just confessed. "I mean. The perfume is good. Not that I…" She stopped herself before saying something else she'd regret more.
"My sister gave me this one for last Christmas. She knows a lot about these things. You know, fashion and the like." Matthew said pointing at his own clothing. Also clothes that Sarah gifted him.
"I don't really know about this stuff." Faralynn said feeling under-dressed compared to him. She wasn't even wearing any perfume. "I just put on the first thing I had."
"Really? But you look really beautiful." Matthew complimented her casually making Faralynn blush.
"Th-thank you." She stuttered.
Matthew soon blushed too after realizing what he just said.
A moment of silence fell between the two before Faralynn cleared her throat and pointed at the scroll.
"I think I understand what Illyzan is saying here."
"What is it?" Matthew asked as if he was being awaken from a dream.
"It's quite a lot, grab a pen and write down while I translate." She said.
The work of translating out loud and writing it down took away their minds from each other focusing their attention to the words on the scroll.
After finishing writing down Faralynn's translation of the scroll, Matthew got up and stretched his back. He excused himself going to the washroom to relief himself.
As soon as the door closed, Faynn sprung out from the shadows with a sly smile.
"That was hot. I thought you two would kiss each other at some point there." The spy laughed.
"Shut up." Faralynn pouted.
"Come on…" Faynn smiled and hugged Faralynn from behind. "Wasn't he 'your Matt'?"
Faralynn blushed and struggled against Faynn's embrace.
"Let go of me!" She exclaimed.
"If you don't act, 'your Matt' will be stolen away." Faynn teased her pinching her cheek. "Or didn't you see how Mia looks at him? Even Erin is starting to behave strangely around him. Now Helen calls him to a family lunch? And that friend of his, the lawyer? He's surrounded by women, Lynn." She gave Faralynn a sisterly warning. "You might lose him."
"Shut up!" Faralynn slapped Faynn's hand away as if she was trying to slap away the words her bodyguard said.
When Matthew opened the door to the small study room, he saw Faynn tickling Faralynn who was now laying on the table trying her best not to laugh and struggling against the other elf's assault.
Both women blushed deeply from being caught in such a childish behavior.
Faynn quickly recomposed herself with a smile, winked at Matthew, and, without saying a word, went back into the shadows.
Faralynn couldn't run away like that, so she just cleared her throat and jumped to her feet. She averted her look fixing her clothes that shifted during their playful bickering and said trying to sound as casual as possible:
"Faynn and I know each other for a long time. She's piratically my sister." Faralynn explained herself. "We were just playing around."
"Well, I got that." Matthew laughed sitting down.
"Good." Faralynn sat down hard on the chair as if saying that was the last thing she would say about what he just saw.
Matthew read again the translation.
"Did you understand?" Faralynn asked him when he seemed to finish reading.
"I think I did." Matthew said without taking his eyes off the words on his notebook. "Ffyr? Are you here?" He called his familiar who took a while to appear from the other side of the window. She was frolicking around the plants of the school.
"What do you want?" She asked a bit annoyed to be interrupted from her leisure.
"Can you read this?" Matthew asked her pointing at his notes.
"I can't read." Ffyr shrugged. "But I could listen to you reading. You're really loud in your head when you're reading."
"So, what do you think?"
"We could try. I'd love to have a physical body that isn't just a ball of light. Perhaps I could taste some of those chocolate Sarah seems to like so much." Ffyr said excited.
"I thought spirits didn't need to eat." Matthew said confused.
"We don't need. But it's not like we can't taste if we do. Duh." Ffyr said as if that was obvious. "That's the only reason we take on physical bodies!" She gave her own opinion as if it was a universal truth.
Faralynn was waiting patiently while Matthew spoke to Ffyr. She could only hear his side of the conversation, but could more or less understand what Ffyr was saying.
"Will you two try it?" She asked after their conversation seemed to reach an end.
"Yeah. Ffyr seems eager to try and taste some chocolate." Matthew said.
"If it works, I'll give her a good one from this artisanal shop I know." Faralynn said smiling at the ball of light that started to dance in midair. "Are you going to do it now?"
"I think I want to speak with Professor Lydia first. There are things in here that I want to hear her opinion." Matthew was prudent.
"That's wise." Faralynn agreed. "If you need help…" She started offering aid, but left out the rest because of her bashfulness.
"Thank you, Lynn. I'll be sure to call you if I need any help. And thank you for translating this for me." Matthew smiled at her taking away a beat of her heart.
"N-no problem." She stuttered.
"We should get going. It's almost noon. Helen must be waiting for us." Matthew said getting up and organizing his stuff inside his backpack.
"We should." Faralynn said getting up and taking her Jane Austen book with her. She had a huge smile on her face that she didn't realize she had.
