Chapter 93 – Animal Companion

After class, Matthew found Professor Lydia in the flower garden again. Earlier last week, he gave her the scroll Master Firynn had given him about the Animal Companion skill and Faralynn's translation. That Monday, the professor called him saying that she wanted to speak with him about it.

She was dressed in a small pencil skirt and wearing a suit like she normally used. Lydia was a summoning based adventurer, which meant most of her class choices were in classes with high Charisma stats. Adding that to her provocative clothes choice made Matthew, and most people who looked at her, lose his footing a bit.

And Professor Lydia loved it. She always smiled and laughed when people around her reacted like bumbling fools. She used that in her favor, specially when summoning spirits who reacted the same way.

"Good morning professor." Matthew said getting close to her.

"Morning, Matthew." She said while smoking on her cigarette holder. "Interesting reading." She said giving him back the scroll and the translation. "Lady Faralynn translated much better than I could."

"You know elvish?" Matthew asked sitting down at her side.

"I do. Not very well, but I learned after I started teaching here." Lydia said putting out her cigarette after Matthew coughed lightly.

"So…" Matthew circled his finger over each other. "Do you think I should try? On Ffyr?"

"Did you read upon fairy biology?" The professor asked.

"A lot. I was still reading about it whenever I could."

"Then tell me. How many species of fairies there are?" Lydia asked as if quizzing him.

"There is the Fairy, the Sprite, the Nixie, the Fey and the Puck." Matthew counted on his fingers. "Each of them are categorized into minor, normal, greater and noble by how long they have lived and how powerful they are. They all came first from the Fae realm and later became denizens of the other realms becoming unique to which realm they inhabited."

"Your Ffyr is which?" The professor asked genuinely not knowing the answer.

"I'm a Ffyr!" Matthew's familiar said proudly.

"She's a Fey." Matthew said. "She has butterfly wings. Nixies and Pucks don't have wings, Sprites have ant like wings and Fairies mana are not tied to elements, but to emotions." He explained.

"I see. Your Ffyr has both wind and fire mana, you said." Lydia rubbed her chin thinking. "If she's a lesser spirit, we can assume she's also a minor Fey?"

"I don't know how powerful she is in the Fae realm." Matthew scratched his head. "But she insists she's very powerful there."

Lydia laughed. Even good-natured Fae could not be trusted. Their own perception of the world around them could change how things were in the chaos realm.

"Let's treat her as a minor Fey then." Lydia said taking loud protests out of Ffyr that only Matthew could hear. "According to Firynn's sister, the Animal Companion skill is dangerous for the creature recipient of the skill. It forcefully triggers a transformation that should take years or centuries to occur."

"Yes. When I used on Lumi, I felt she would die if I stopped midway. That's why I almost killed myself doing it."

"Tell me more." Lydia asked. "What did you think when you started to use the skill?"

"I thought about making her as powerful as possible. Guess that was my mistake then, wasn't it?" Matthew pressed his lips together.

"Yeah. Mow much MP do you have?"

"41"

"That's quite a lot for your level." Lydia said. "It's impossible to know how much MP using the skill will take. But I guess you have enough. Just pick a day when you won't use any MP and keep some mana potions ready." Lydia said. "Focus on making Ffyr becoming a normal Fey and nothing greater than that."

"Yeah. I thought the same."

"Do you have any more questions?" Lydia asked.

"No. I was just a bit nervous of using the skill. But you calmed me down. I think I'll try it." Matthew smiled at her.

"Ok then, Matthew. Remember to follow the process in the scroll. I'm sure you'll do fine. I'm eager to see Ffyr's true form. Show her to me when you're done." Lydia said getting up and waving him goodbye before going away.

"What do you think Ffyr?" Matthew asked his familiar after the professor went away.

"I want to try! I want to show Sarah my striking figure!" Ffyr said happily.

Matthew laughed and then said shaking his head to make himself serious again.

"It might be dangerous for you."

"It won't. I trust you." Ffyr said as if it was nothing.

Matthew skipped training that afternoon. He ate lunch and went home. Sarah was there and he asked her to help him. She would feed him mana potions as needed during the spell.

He prepared a place in the kitchen. A red cloth on the table and some lit candles forming a circle around it.

The scroll said it was important to cast the spell as some sort of ritual. The ritualistic aspect would help the caster to use the skill with more focus and precision. A small circle around Ffyr would help Matthew to ignore anything outside it and make him use his mana more efficiently.

The second part of the ritual was to envision the next stage of the creature's evolution. For Lumi, for example, as a snow owl, her next step should've been becoming an ice owl. Matthew, however, burned steps trying to make her as strong as possible demanding much more mana than he had to transform her into an Ice Phoenix.

For Ffyr, Matthew just had the version of her that he saw when they made the pact. He wasn't sure how different she would be as a normal Fey. Each fairy had their own unique appearance and, unlike with animals and some monsters, it was impossible to know their rank based only on that. He focused his idea in just making her a little bit stronger. That way he would not go overboard and use more mana than necessary.

The third part of the ritual was to pour mana into the creature, but not to start the process of transformation. The user should use his mana to assess the amount of mana the creature had inside of them. If the target's mana was greater than half of that of the caster's, it was not safe for either to cast the spell.

Ffyr's mana was impressive for her size. But still less than half of Matthew's.

Only after that, the user should cast the spell to improve the creature or spirit. And he should do it slowly over the course of dozens of hours if needed.

Matthew started to use the Animal Companion skill on Ffyr. Slowly. In the same way Professor Claude taught him to use the Purification skill.

He could then feel everything he did wrong with Lumi that led to his near death. He felt Ffyr's mana, her body shape, even her feelings through the mana. They were connected now, not only in soul, but also by mana.

He concentrated more infusing every little part of Ffyr's body with his own mana. Making her stronger and bigger.

"Potion." Matthew asked Sarah with his eyes closed and she hurriedly fed him some. She felt like a nurse in an operation theater.

It took 5 hours and 7 mana potions. Matthew's parents arrived home during that time and watched from afar after Sarah explained to them what Matthew was doing. Matthew himself didn't even notice that they arrived. He was too focused on the ritual and on Ffyr.

After the 5th hour, Matthew finally stopped. He rested against the chair and popped up a mana potion. The green ball of light that was Ffyr was still in the middle of the circle, but it was much bigger than later.

"Are you done?" Sarah asked looking at the shining ball of light on the table.

"Yeah." Matthew breathed deeply and very tired.

"And that's it? I thought we would be able to see her now." Sarah pouted a little.

"She's getting used to it." Matthew said. "Give her a bit."

With those words, the light ball on the table shined brighter becoming white and even bigger than before. And suddenly it vanished.

"Tah-dah!!!" Ffyr screamed striking a pose over the table.

Ffyr was a slender woman with white skin, freckles on her cheeks and green eyes. Her hair was long and had an orange hue that resembled sparks coming out of a bonfire. She had pointy ears like an elf. From her back sprouted two crimson red butterfly wings as big as herself. She was bare feet wearing a very small green skirt and a tight backless green top that hugged her small bust.

Exactly like Matthew remembered her. With just one difference. Ffyr right now was only about a foot tall instead of being as tall as him from when they made the pact.

"Oh my god! She's so cute!" Sarah's eyes sparkled.

"Is that Ffyr?" Matthew's mother also looked at her impressed. "She's beautiful."

Matthew's father didn't say anything, but was also admiring the little Fey on the table.

"I told you they would be amazed by my appearance!" Ffyr said with a huge proud smile.

Sarah took Ffyr in her hands with care and without asking permission and hugged her.

"You're so cute!" Sarah repeated herself.

"Matt! Help me!" Ffyr asked feeling herself being crushed. "Don't just stand there and laugh! Help me!" Ffyr pleaded trying to get out of the hold. "Matt? Matt? Matt! MATT! MAAAAAAATT!"
