Jax looked around at the tension. Everyone was staring at him. Waiting.
He shrugged.
"Well, jokes apart. Or rather, truth apart." He gestured at the army behind them. "What made the whole academy show up here? Was my absence that heartbreaking to you all? Was--?"
Zharina cut him off. "I don't know the full details. Headmistress just ordered us after many residents reported letters from their families about what was happening here."
Jax smirked. "And here I thought that demonic slut was feeling guilty and came to apologize for her mistakes."
Zharina glanced at him. Then smiled.
"By the way, Jax." She cracked her knuckles. "Now that you're not a professor anymore. Just a peasant like before. Like you always were."
Her eyes gleamed dangerously.
"Wouldn't it be fun to have my revenge?"
Jax sighed.
"After I taught you the whole theory. Then gave you practical. And now even a live example." He gestured toward Zinnia. "You still gonna go that far? If you want my one-eyed snake that eagerly, you can just ask. I don't mind sharing it with chicks like you."
Zharina's face twisted. "You—"
BONK!
Zinnia's fist connected with his skull before Zharina could finish.
"Ouch! What was that for?"
"Don't you dare mention me again!" Zinnia's voice was sharp with anger.
Zharina looked at the girl curiously. "Who is this?"
Jax rubbed his head. "Umm, let's see. Friend? Yes. Girlfriend? Yes. Daughter too if we talk about the future and things go right. She's from some other stupid world. Just like those guys there." He pointed at the battlefield where bodies were being torn apart.
Zharina looked at Zinnia with a questioning face. "So is that true? Or is he mocking me again? Of course I am asking for the Other world part"
"Who do you think I am, cutie?" Jax said. "I said the truth. Every bit of it."
Zharina's gaze stayed on Zinnia. "Her face doesn't say it."
Before Jax could answer, Zinnia stepped forward. Her eyes locked on Zharina.
"Who is this woman?" Her tone was demanding.
Jax groaned. "Oh let me think again. You girls will make my brain explode."
He made a show of thinking hard.
"She is a colleague of mine. Very brilliant professor of martial arts at the top academy in this world. And her moves..." He made a chef's kiss. "Muah. Absolutely divine."
He was clearly remembering their night together. The memory made him smile.
Zinnia raised an eyebrow. "Colleague? Professor? Are You-- Don't tell me you're roleplaying here."
Jax caught the hint. He needed to make sure Zinnia's words about him being from another world didn't reach Zharina's ears.
So he played it careful.
"What? Professor is a great profession, you know. I wanted to help the future of my world. Guide the next generation. Shape young minds. Pass on wisdom to those hungry for knowledge. Teaching is a noble calling. The very foundation of civilization."
Zinnia looked at him like she was watching the greatest liar in existence perform his masterpiece.
There was fun happening on Jax's end.
On the other end was complete execution.
The enemy numbers had fallen drastically. On the academy's side, there were casualties too. But far less. They were too coordinated. Too experienced. Every move flowed into the next.
The enemy had no such coordination. They were broken. Scared. Terrified.
Most soldiers from this world knew exactly how powerful the academy's forces were. They had signed up for conquest. Not suicide.
And the coordination was broken first by their own most powerful comrade.
Harry.
He was focused on one target only. Jax. He kept stupidly commanding his summons to march toward him. Forgetting the new interference in his way. Forgetting to help his own army.
And that new interference was cutting through his summons like paper.
Kessiri Talli'nah danced through them. Her twin blades sang death with every swing.
Rowen's ancient axe carved paths of destruction. The runes glowed as it sought targets on its own.
Lysandra was like a psychic nightmare to them. They didn't know what was hitting them. Bodies just fell apart from invisible forces.
The rest were just as devastating.
The battle lasted two more hours.
Then the victor was almost decided.
It was epic. Everyone was drenched in blood. Hurt. Exhausted. In pain.
But the battle was almost won.
Only around fifty enemy soldiers remained. Their leaders were broken.
Harry had lost all his summons. Every single one. He had accepted that he would be eliminated here. He would join Erica.
But how would he show her his face?
He was deep in his thoughts. Drowning in failure.
On the other side was Masha. Left with only one beast. Her most powerful. Her shield.
The ridgeback yak stood in front of her protectively.
But it didn't stand for long.
Rowen and Kessiri were already charging. Battling among themselves to see who takes the kill first. Both rivals. The catwoman and the wolfkin.
Their weapons crashed against each other inside the yak's throat. The beast had swung its weapon to block. But they dodged easily. And struck together.
Gone.
Done.
Now ahead of them was Masha. Alone.
Both looked at each other. Still cursing. They had shared the previous kill. Both wanted more contribution. More recognition.
Beside them stood Lysandra, Lucindra, and Aerisya. Looking at the two rivals with embarrassment.
But they let them end it.
Rowen and Kessiri charged again. Same opposite coordination. Racing for the kill. Aimed right at Masha's head.
Masha couldn't do anything. She just wanted one thing.
A miracle.
Which was really stupid.
They were close. Inches apart. Axe and blade pointed at the same spot. Even clashing against each other. Sparks flew from the contact.
Then the miracle came.
Both weapons stopped. Blocked by a single sword.
And the one holding it was still smiling.
Masha saw him.
It was really worse.
She was saved by none other than Jax.
'Why the hell did he help me?'
Little did she know it wasn't help.
It was like protecting his chicken before eating it.
And his next dinner, the one to be eaten, was her.
