Just like that, they broke, and soon more ghouls stepped up wanting to join me. The threat of danger looming outside pushed them. The first to step up was a young male about Derrick's age. Without hesitation, I sank my fangs into his neck, and just like Yuki, he writhed in agony for a few minutes before the pain subsided.
It was the same with the others who stepped up, and soon I had injected my venom into every ghoul in Grey Waste.
"I don't feel much different," the young man who I turned first muttered.
"That's because you need to level up before your organ fully develops," I responded. It was the same for Yuki.
"Level up? Like killing things?"
The young man turned his gaze to the chaos happening outside the wall and gulped hard. It was the same with the others. They all looked worried when they heard this.
"No need to fret. If you don't want to face death knights before you've received your special organ, then you don't have to," I said, and immediately their faces brightened.
"Really? We don't have to?"
"Of course. Killing a ratfolk will have the same effect."
Their faces froze stiff.
"Wait, you're not suggesting that we… That's unthinkable."
I couldn't help but sigh internally. A ghoul saying killing is unthinkable? They have been domesticated like dogs.
I honestly expected this reaction from them. Their instincts have been dulled just like mine was. But I will fix that.
"You're forgetting that kill or be killed is the fundamental nature of our kind. We aren't humans. We don't uphold the same morals. You can strip a snake of its fangs, but at the end of the day, it's still a snake. You are all ghouls, a race that is meant to survive by killing. Saying that killing another to survive is unthinkable should be taboo among your kind."
Their eyes widened as if it was the first time in a long time they were seeing the light. Their instincts had been suppressed for so long that they practically forgot about it. When I saw them living peacefully among the ratfolk while starving at that, I knew something was wrong. They had been domesticated like dogs, but today I would free them.
Slowly, their eyes began to open, and they began to see the truth.
"You face them or you face what's waiting for you outside these walls."
The looks of disgust which were once on their faces had now disappeared. Replaced by conviction. They knew what they needed to do to survive and were now steeling themselves for it. Though it wouldn't be hard if they just gave in to their primal instincts, which was to hunt and kill.
just like before, it started with a few ghouls. They slowly turned their gazes towards the ratfolk living inside their houses made of garbage and their sewers. Their eyes turned the color of blood as they began to focus on their prey.
Like wild dogs on a hunt, the ghouls didn't waste another second and immediately went after the ratfolk. Sensing the threat of danger, the ratfolk tried to retreat, but they were too little, too late. They couldn't fight the onslaught that was coming their way.
The blood curdling squeaks of the ratfolks mixed with the sounds of flesh tearing apart to create a symphony of death. And soon, the ghouls who decided they didn't want any part of the slaughter begun to lose themselves. They couldn't hold themselves back anymore. The scent of blood and flesh drove them wild and soon they joined the hunt.
All the urges that they were suppressing for the last centuries finally came out. I watched in silence as the ghouls went about their business, slaughtering the ratfolk, and with every one they killed, they leveled up and their organ manifested in shape.
I saw a plethora of different organs. Some had wings, others had insect legs, while some had specialized ears or eyes. There were countless different variations.
Just as things were coming to a close and most the ratfolk were killed, a maddening headache took me. My vision blurred, my ears rang, and my head felt as if it was being split apart from the inside.
"Liam! What happened?!" Yuki shouted and rushed towards me when she saw me nearly lose my footing.
The headache lasted for several minutes until it was interrupted by a loud game-like notification.
[DING! You have unlocked a unique bloodline: Ghoul King.
Description: You are now the king of ghouls. The absolute ruler over the entire race. All ghouls will bow to you in servitude.
Skills:
Lesser Ghoul Creation: User is able to create lesser ghouls. These types of ghouls are similar to zombies. They have no sense of self and suffer from constant hunger pangs. They eat anything that has flesh, whether alive or dead. They have a lifespan of 24 hours. Lesser ghouls can also create more ghouls of the same type with only a scratch or bite needed to get infected. All EXP from kills by lesser ghouls go towards the user.
Absolute Sovereign: User can compel or command ghouls to do anything he pleases. Ghouls cannot object or disobey their king.
Ghoul Organ: User will develop his own organ. One specially fit for him.]
I stared at the system notification with wide eyes. I unlocked a unique bloodline. One specially just for me. Khalissi told me that unique bloodlines are given when one accomplishes an outstanding feat.
It was the same for the awakened human who defeated the greater fiend demon. He also obtained a unique bloodline for accomplishing that feat. Maybe unlocking the hidden organ ghouls possess was its own feat. That must be it.
I read through the system notification once again.
"A ghoul king, huh?"
This was perfect. There was one ability there that I desperately needed. I could already see how things were coming together perfectly.
"Are you okay, Liam?" Yuki asked, her hand against my back as she tried to support me.
"I'm fine."
She sighed in relief and held her chest.
"You really scared me for a second."
"Was it really that bad?"
"Yes! For me, it felt as if the world was ending. What was that anyway? Don't tell me you're dying because you turned all of them. If that's the case, all I need to do is kill them and you'll be fine, right?"
"That's not necessary. I'm already fine," I assured her.
After I caught my breath and took in all the information from the system screen, I turned my attention to the ghouls in front of me. The ones who looked at me with hope in their eyes. As their king!
'What should I do now?'
