I found Khalissi standing at the edge of the sky islands, staring at what was below. The bloodmoth that accompanied us hovered in the air just above her.
The moment it saw me, it flew over, creating a loud SWOOSH sound in the air. The bloodmoth seemed intrigued by the raven that was resting on my shoulder.
The raven stared at the bloodmoth with disinterest while the moth's bulbous eyes continued to scan the strange creature resting on my shoulder.
Meanwhile, I continued to approach Khalissi and stopped right beside her.
"Are you and your bird friend done cuddling?" she smiled.
"Yes, it was enjoyable."
Her eyes turned sharply to me for just a moment before she returned her cold gaze to the city lying below.
From this height, it looked no bigger than a dot in the ground. It looked no different from a play field, and with the barrier covering the city, it was impossible to see what lay outside.
"This city is located in the middle of an ocean. There is no land for miles out. I can tell that much." She said.
"Makes sense. Must be why they are able to exist for so long without humans finding them. I bet the witches have some magic that prevents human technologies from finding this place. And if a human happened upon this city, then they would be swiftly dealt with."
She raised her head slightly to look at me.
"How do you know?"
"Because that's what I would do. By the way, what are the rest of the demons doing now that Conquest can't come here for the next few months?"
Khalissi raised an eyebrow.
"I didn't say he can't come here. I said he won't. Don't forget that."
"Why is that? Dragging out this war doesn't make sense for them."
"When you butcher an animal, don't you fatten it up first to make sure it's even worth consuming? You guys are the same; you didn't even possess mana before we came. Killing you would do nothing for our strength. Hence, we gave you time to adjust to your power and grow stronger. We need you at a level where it will be worth killing. Death was sent here first to weed out the weaklings that couldn't evolve, but you know how that turned out."
That made sense. The only reason they came here in the first place was to get stronger.
"As for your question, the world itself has begun to change. You originally had seven continents, correct? Now it's just one huge continent. The mana is slowly changing the plants and wildlife. I'm guessing the first set of dungeons are starting to pop up?"
"Dungeons?" I asked.
"Yes. It will be a great way to increase strength, so I guess a lot of people are already ahead of you. I'm guessing the humans who awakened are already banding together to clear these dungeons. Your world is one that will be ruled by strength. A few striving settlements are already built; I bet most won't last long."
Khalissi's lips curved up into a smile as if remembering something.
"Your wish is to build a striving city, right?"
"Yes," I answered as I watched the clouds drift by.
"That is a difficult goal to achieve given the current state of things. Fighting the demon army and building a striving city in the apocalypse almost sounds impossible."
"It will be difficult, I admit. First, I'll have to be strong enough to face whatever threat that comes along."
For some reason, Khalissi's expression looked a little downcast. I got the feeling that she was worried about something.
"Tell me something, aren't you worried that I'll betray you? I am a demon after all."
"Not at all."
I didn't even think there was a sliver of chance she would betray me. If I did she wouldn't have been allowed to stay with my pack for so long.
I admit she was harder to control than the others, but that was it.
"Then you're a naive fool."
Strangely, a smile began to form on her lips.
"Are you ready to leave? Or are you planning to traverse the sky islands?"
"No need. I've seen all I need to. Let's go."
Selice and the other Valkyries gathered to see us off. They bent down on one knee with their heads lowered.
"We will get stronger for you, Alpha!" They all said in unison. Their voices a testament to their conviction.
Even though I just met them, it felt as if I knew them for years. Selice stood with her hand across her chest, tightly clenching the fabric.
Her eyes seemed sad, but she still gave off the aura of a queen. Someone fit to rule. With one final goodbye, we were off.
The bloodmoth latched onto my back, its wings creating a nice buzz in the air as it flew off.
Khalissi was flying gracefully to my right, and the raven was to my left. We descended the sky faster than we came up.
I closed my eyes, feeling the cold night against my face. Wolves weren't meant for this, but somehow it felt comforting being in the sky.
I slowly opened my eyes to see the beautiful city coming into view. My ears captured every sound, every heartbeat.
It was bustling with life. But that was all there was—life. They no longer had any power since we cut off their mana supply, so the city was pitch black.
Still, nothing noteworthy began to happen yet. They probably thought it was just a minor disturbance. At most, they were probably a little annoyed, but they would soon realize the severity of their situation.
"What do you see when you look at the people of this city?" Khalissi asked as we descended downwards.
"I see cattle and livestock."
"Funny, that's what a demon would say."
"No, that's what a wolf would say," I corrected her. "It's natural for a predator to not feel any empathy for the prey they are meant to kill. If I did care about them, then it would be going against my natural instincts."
"Yes, you're right. I find it impressive that you managed to control your bloodlust while living with humans for so long. I bet suppressing your bloodlust must've turned you into a defanged snake. Someone with no instincts, no drive to kill or do anything."
"It's all in the past. I've regained myself in the apocalypse. It's time to move on."
Khalissi and I flew over the city, taking in the sight of the city until we finally arrived at Grey Waste.
