Wilderness Survival with Druid System

Chapter 82: Hunting Thunderbirds

If Chen Wen hunting a grizzly bear is the ultimate display of violence and physical prowess,

then Hua Yun hunting thunderbirds is the ultimate showcase of archery skills!

Hua Yun pulled out all the arrows, placing them within easy reach.

Then, with her right hand, she held an arrow between each of the three fingers other than the thumb and index finger.

The first arrow was nocked.

With so many targets, Hua Yun didn't even bother to aim deliberately.

She half-kneeled on the ground, holding the bow steady with her left hand, drawing the string with her right.

Accompanied by the slight creak of the wooden bow, Hua Yun drew a full moon.

Whoosh!

An arrow shot through the air, piercing into the flock of thunderbirds.

Hua Yun didn't even look to see if the first arrow hit, quickly nocking the second arrow on the bowstring.

Draw, aim, shoot again!

The second arrow flew out, accurately hitting a thunderbird that was pecking at something.

The arrow, carrying immense power, passed through the thunderbird's chest without losing momentum, directly striking its companion behind it.

One arrow, two hits!

And just as the two thunderbirds let out mournful cries, the third arrow, like a wolf, whistled through the air.

Triple shot!

The thunderbird flock exploded into chaos.

They had no idea where the attack came from, or even where the enemy was.

Driven by fear, the thunderbirds made a sound similar to continuous hiccups, somewhat resembling thunder.

This is partly how they got their name.

As their cries spread, all the thunderbirds fled in panic without any clear direction.

Although called birds, thunderbirds are not very adept at flying.

They are more like wild pheasants, flapping their wings to cover short distances before landing and running wildly.

Yet the hunt continued.

Hua Yun grabbed more arrows and shot another triple round.

But her speed slowed down.

In the end, before the thunderbird flock completely escaped, Hua Yun had fired six arrows.

Except for the fifth one that missed and stuck into a piece of wood, all the other arrows hit their mark.

"Let's go, collect the spoils!"

Hua Yun took a deep breath, stretching her sore right arm, and walked over with the lynx.

A total of seven birds, Hua Yun's luck was quite good, with two arrows hitting two targets each.

After collecting the prey and finishing off the ones that weren't quite dead,

Hua Yun tied the legs of the thunderbirds together with rope, hanging them behind her.

"Lots of gain! But let's not head back yet, let's find more prey!"

Feeling quite content, Hua Yun even hummed a tune.

After this hunt, the fleeing thunderbirds would alert the surrounding animals.

Continuing to hunt in this area would be unlikely.

The animals in this area had become very sensitive; hunting here would be quite difficult.

Therefore, Hua Yun decided not to conceal her movements and planned to walk a certain distance away before continuing the hunt.

...

Back at the camp.

After a nice nap, Chen Wen sat up.

"Want to go out and play?"

Seeing Chen Wen moving, the Golden Eagle immediately flapped its wings excitedly.

It had also been a bit bored these days, just wanting to find some fun.

But Chen Wen lazily moved closer to the campfire.

"Not going out, not going out, it's so nice in the shelter—warm and cozy."

Chen Wen didn't mind talking directly to the Golden Eagle.

Because he had intentionally "forgotten" his new recording equipment at the inn.

When alone, as long as he avoided the cameras a bit, he could speak freely.

The Golden Eagle couldn't hide its disappointment upon hearing this.

The whole eagle seemed downcast.

Ultimately, Chen Wen couldn't bear it.

He stood up, brushing off the snow on him: "Fine, fine, let's go for a walk!"

The Golden Eagle immediately perked up with excitement.

Flapping its wings,

it firmly landed on Chen Wen's head, clutching his hat.

"Let's go!"

...

Though he said he was out playing with the Golden Eagle, Chen Wen felt more like he was out with a husky.

Because after they went out, the Golden Eagle completely unleashed its nature.

Darting rapidly between the branches, occasionally shooting up into the sky, diving at high speed.

Chen Wen watched with keen interest.

You know, although he couldn't fly as impressively as the Golden Eagle now, combining his hands and feet, he felt he wouldn't lose to it in such a complex terrain.

But with the cameras around, Chen Wen could only silently watch the Golden Eagle fly.

Meanwhile, he learned about the Golden Eagle's wing maneuvers.

For example, during a dive, how it used wing vibrations to control speed and direction.

The Golden Eagle put on quite a show.

Continuously performing high-difficulty flight stunts.

As Chen Wen was watching intently, the Golden Eagle, soaring skyward, suddenly stiffened in mid-air.

Then, it quickly dived towards Chen Wen, shouting, "I've found something! I've found something!"

What the heck?

Chen Wen was baffled and quickly extended his arm to catch the Golden Eagle.

The Golden Eagle took a breath and said immediately, "I saw a bird!"

"Damn it, this place is full of birds,"

Chen Wen cursed, wondering if the Golden Eagle returned the intelligence it had gained.

But what the Golden Eagle said next surprised Chen Wen.

"No, it's not an ordinary bird. Its color is very special, the same as the ground! If not for its eyes, I might have missed that it's a bird!"

Same color as the ground?

Seems like a pure white bird.

The range of possibilities narrowed, but it still couldn't be confirmed.

"Whatever kind of bird it is, it has nothing to do with us, and I can't afford to feed any more creatures right now."

Chen Wen said helplessly.

Currently, he only had enough food to barely feed his party.

Adding another mouth might land them in a food crisis.

Hearing this, the Golden Eagle nodded.

Indeed.

That bird might look beautiful, but if it were to compete for food or couldn't mate with itself,

then catching it would be pointless.

The Golden Eagle settled on Chen Wen's shoulder, preparing to head back to camp.

But just as Chen Wen and the Golden Eagle left,

on a snow-laden pine tree,

a clump of snow suddenly trembled.

Then, a pair of golden eyes suddenly opened, staring in the direction where Chen Wen had left.

The golden eyes blinked, as if observing Chen Wen and the Golden Eagle.

...

Meanwhile, with Hua Yun.

After leaving the thunderbird hunting ground, with the lynx's excellent hearing,

the two of them arrived at a broad slope.

What kind of prey was here?

Looking around, Hua Yun felt she couldn't see anything.

But as she wondered, suddenly, a black dot on the snowy ground moved.

Hua Yun keenly noticed this motion.

Looking down, at the bottom of the slope, a group of all-white rabbits was active.

Hua Yun was taken aback: This is... snowshoe hares?

No, not snowshoe hares!

Snowshoe hares are smaller than these rabbits, and while they do form groups, they don't gather into such large clusters.

Snowshoe hares mostly live solitary lives, only forming short family groups during the breeding season.

Yet this large group of rabbits was clearly communal!

This group numbered about twenty or thirty.

At the moment, they were foraging but looked a bit lethargic.

Hua Yun raised her bow and arrow again.

This time, the unfortunate targets were this group of rabbits!
