With a thunderous crash, lightning exploded in the Siren Mansion. Tang Xin noticed that the sky outside had somehow darkened. Her proficiency in the Water Technique made her especially sensitive to the moisture in the air. Judging by the current humidity, a torrential rain would soon descend.
Amy was crouching amidst a pile of miscellaneous boxes, searching while muttering to herself: "Where is it?"
"Where did those two kids go hiding!?" Amy was furious.
A few minutes ago, they had encountered two children inside the mansion. The moment Amy saw them, she had chased after them like an Evil Ghost finding young lambs. Terrified, the two children hid in the storage room on the second floor; any child would be scared upon seeing a strange woman reaching out with a wicked grin.
Finally, Tang Xin sighed, climbed onto a ladder, and pulled open the attic door on the ceiling. Two small shadows immediately rolled down with a gasp. Tang Xin caught the girl, while the slightly older boy landed hard on the floor, grimacing in pain.
"You're not allowed, you're not allowed to hurt my sister!"
The boy stood up and shouted. After discerning Tang Xin's appearance, his voice softened. He figured such a gentle-looking sister wouldn't harm his sister, unlike Amy, who was approaching with clenched fists; she was the one who had just chased them!
The boy's face turned slightly pale, and he retreated a few steps. But when he thought of his sister still in someone else's hands, he randomly grabbed a wooden stick, mustered the courage, and swung it a few times.
"Let, let go of my sister, or I'll fight you to the end!"
Tang Xin helplessly put down the little girl in her arms. The little girl's face was covered with thick dust, and she hid behind Tang Xin's white dress, her big watery eyes misted with fear.
"Why were you running aimlessly!" Amy slapped the wooden stick out of the boy's hands directly, exuding aggression.
Realizing the two in front of him wouldn't harm them, the boy swallowed and retorted: "Then why were you chasing us?"
Amy's expression froze. What he said made so much sense.
The boy still carried vigilance in his eyes, looking for escape routes. A few days ago, he and his sister returned home, only to find a group of strangers had turned their house upside down. Since then, strangers on the island had been searching for them daily, inquiring with the town's residents about their whereabouts.
The usually kind acquaintances around them seemed like different people. Often, before he and his sister could even rest a moment at someone's house, those people would come knocking. They'd been betrayed by their neighbors!
The child's innate wariness of malice made him realize those people had ill intentions toward him and his sister. So he hid with his little sister in this abandoned mansion, venturing out each day to find food. Unfortunately, today they had been caught.
"Kid, do you know how much trouble you've stirred up!!" Amy's angry voice made the boy's body tremble.
"Wha- what trouble?"
"Speak, did you find something recently, or take something you shouldn't have!"
The boy, Beck, slowly calmed down: "Could you be more specific?"
Meanwhile, Beck searched his memory about the past month. From what she said, it seemed he had done something he shouldn't have, bringing trouble to himself and his sister. Yet, no matter how much he thought, he couldn't recall anything unusual.
The life in the past month was no different from before! Fishing during the day, and using the money earned to support himself and his sister's survival at night, allowing his sister to go to school in town.
He even never participated in any of the adventure activities hosted by the boys in town, nor did he enter any rumored prohibited places in town!
Ever since their mother left, he knew he couldn't mess around, couldn't make any mistakes, careful in everything he did to avoid bringing trouble to himself and his sister. Yet still, those damned things came for him?
"If it's something I caught while fishing, I'd remember. Describe it, I'll give it to you if I have it, just stop bothering me and Shanshan!" Beck shouted, clenching his fists.
This time Amy was stumped.
She didn't know.
To be precise, no one other than this boy knew what the Anchor Point sealing the Siren Miracle looked like, nor did they know the exact location of the seal, because the song of the sea would seduce people's hearts. To eliminate all possible risks, the Withered Flower family always had prisoners at the time perform the tasks when arranging and moving the seal's Anchor Points each year.
"Could you try to remember it again?" Amy gestured with her hands.
Beck: "???
He gritted his teeth: "I ought to know a little more, shouldn't I?"
Amy, helpless, leaned in close to the boy and whispered: "If I tell you something, there's a good chance that knowing it could put you in danger, you might even die. Do you want to hear it?"
Beck was stunned for a moment. He looked at his sister, showing no fear; he didn't want his sister to worry.
Cautiously, the boy said: "If, if I die, my sister shouldn't know about this. You must give her a better life."
He wasn't sure what kind of Vortex he was in, but he knew he had bargaining chips at the moment, capable of gaining some things.
Amy nodded solemnly.
Beck's eyes struggled for a moment, then he firmed up and gave an almost imperceptible nod.
Tang Xin took Shanshan out of the room, and Amy told Beck about matters related to the Siren Miracle and the seal.
Beck shook his head: "Sorry, even after hearing that, I really can't think of this 'Anchor Point' you're talking about, because I haven't picked up anything odd this month, but I did meet a strange person."
Amy: "Tell me about it."
Beck: "That person was about six feet tall, dressed in red, with red hair. He found us not long after my sister and I hid here, took something from that pile of junk, left us food, and then left."
Beck pointed to the corner of the pile of rubble, while Amy rummaged through it, seeing the food the boy had gathered these days; there were biscuits, bread, candies, and other snacks, as well as many everyday items like soap in clay pots, toothbrushes tied with coarse string, and a small box of charcoal powder, seeming like things they brought from home.
Notably, there was a music box in the corner, inside of which was a photo of a family of three: Beck with his sister and a simply dressed woman, seemingly their mother.
Under the music box's compartment, there were many handmade toys Beck made for his sister, ingeniously constructed, and Amy envisioned the two relying on each other for survival.
"I've checked; nothing's missing."
"Or should I say, whatever it was, it was too inconsequential for a common person to notice?"
Beck glanced at Amy and speculated: "Could the Anchor Point you're talking about not be some talisman stone from novels and movies, but perhaps just a piece of paper imbued with magic power, hidden in a packet of tissues?"
Amy stood frozen in place, her mind blowing up with a loud hum.
That possibility cannot be dismissed.
Or rather, it's closer to the truth. Only this way, even if the island's residents were bewitched by the miracle, intentionally looking for the Anchor Point and seal, they won't be able to find it, because it could very well be a part of their everyday lives, as mundane as a bookshelf or a weed by the roadside.
"If that's the case," Beck's voice shook, "how could I possibly remember any of it?"
