"That guy has been infected with fear!"
"He's turned into a spider monster!"
"Ah!" Screams erupted from the crowd, as the razor-sharp spider legs slashed through the air like an invisible willow leaf blade, a flash of cold light cutting through, heads falling as blood splattered.
The people gathered in the courtyard hadn't had time to see the monster's appearance clearly, or even what had attacked them, only a black shadow flitted through their vision, spinning the world in an instant, their sight awash in crimson.
The entire courtyard descended once more into chaos, people trampling and shoving each other, the spider legs were a wild dance in the air, large groups of heads occasionally flying off, blood spurting; no one knew if death would come upon themselves or those next to them in the next moment. Instinctively wanting to leave this place, the seed of fear had taken root in everyone's heart, drawing from their sanity to grow.
"Kid, get lost!"
An office worker shouted, shoving down a little girl in front of him, his face contorted with terror. The next moment, a gust of wind swept past, and his head soared skyward, the still-warm dark red blood splattering the little girl's entire face.
The small, frail body trembled; the little girl tried to get up, physiological fear causing her to retch, her vomit filled with white, rice-like dots as well. Until her vision blurred, a slender black shadow came cleaving down, and the little girl, her small face pale, closed her eyes, the imagined pain never coming.
Opening her eyes and looking up, she saw a young girl's clear, determined profile. Mori had appeared unknowingly, flipping the spider poison dagger in her hand, shielding in front of the little girl, blocking the monster's attack for her.
"Hurry and run." Mori said.
The girl stepped aside, turning her body, the spider poison dagger swiftly severing the wildly swinging spider legs in the air earlier, dark green blood corroding the ground, sizzling as it went.
The monster's howling of pain echoed through the darkness.
Mori rose, from her waist extracting another spider poison dagger, spinning it in a circle in her hand, holding it in a cross stance in front of her body, the gleam of cold light and sparks interlacing, and the dense cluster of scarlet compound eyes opened beyond the edge of the white blade.
Everything around Mori seemed to slow down; the fear on the faces of the fleeing people frozen, the invisible chaotic trajectory of spider legs became clearly visible, and one of the girl's eyes transformed into a spider-like compound eye; people were deceived by the young master's quiet demeanor, overlooking the fact that she was also a Three Tier Shadow Attacker.
The intense pain aggravated the monster in the darkness, the tremulous roar of the spider sounded, and what followed were two lightning-fast spider legs, bent like whips, cutting through the granite wall like tofu, reaching before Mori in an instant.
The latter did not dodge, charging forward, her toes spinning on the ground, landing between the two spider legs at a tricky angle, holding the twin daggers, spinning rapidly in place for a cycle, the gleam of cold light flashing and vanishing, the burst of dark green spider blood and stone chips grazing the girl's cheek.
Immediately, Mori's steps touched the ground again, bowing low as she sprinted toward the darkness, weaving amidst the spider legs shooting at her continuously. Wherever her blade passed, blood blossomed, sinews snapped.
The monster in the darkness, sensing the threat from Mori, growled in a tremulous yowl, its abdomen swelling up, spurting out dark green saliva, forming a large web covering in Mori's direction.
Mori reacted with extreme quickness, leaping up nimbly just moments before the corrosive liquid reached her, behind her came a desolate scream, someone who had been running away was caught in the web, body turning to charred bones in the powerful corrosive liquid instantly.
The intense corrosive liquid met the blue stone ground, sizzling great plumes of white smoke; the monster's dense compound eyes fixed upon the charred corpse on the ground, just when it thought the girl was resolved, behind it airwaves fluttered, Mori slowly appeared, the cold gleam in her scarlet compound eyes piercing.
The monster shrieked and turned its head, the girl's dagger had already plunged into its throat, withdrawing cleanly and neatly.
A moment later, the monster's head slid off, blood spurting, the cut was incredibly smooth, and it wasn't until this moment that Mori could finally discern the monster's appearance, its body had already heavily deformed, the eight spider legs protruding from its back twitching violently, its skin a mottled bluish-black, and the severed head with a pair of massive spider jaws, the right side of the face covered with a carapace and a dense cluster of tawny compound eyes.
Shortly after the monster died, its body began secreting a sort of semi-transparent white silk, covering the entire body until it turned into a white cocoon. Mori sighed lightly, using fire to burn the white cocoon cleanly.
In mere seconds, the man's organs inside the cocoon had already dissolved into dark green liquid, the cocoon rupturing letting it burble outwards, corroding everything it touched.
Suddenly, from behind came the sound of slicing wind, Mori's pupils contracted slightly, turning sharply; the little girl from earlier had also become such a monster unknowingly, her right half of the small face exploding into countless spider legs several meters long, supporting her entire body as she charged towards Mori at high speed.
Thinking to draw her twin daggers, she discovered both hands were somehow tightly bound by spider silk, unable to move; her gaze trembled, the little girl's mouth shouted 'sister', curling into a strange arc while spraying a large amount of webbing, fastening Mori's entire body to the wall.
The small frail body contrasted sharply with the spider legs several times larger than her body, each step causing the little girl suspended in the air to sway violently, exceptionally eerie as if her face could be ripped off by the speeding legs at any moment.
Mori was unable to break free for a long time, sensing something wrong, knowing that the deeper the fear, the stronger the transformation into a monster; transformations of such a child into a spider monster were often the most troublesome.
Prior to today, she had only understood this spider mutation from textbooks, the child had been normal only a minute earlier, who'd have thought the transformation would be so rapid?
Seeing the sharp spider legs about to slice Mori's face, a gray figure descended from the sky, golden hair fluttering in the air, a foot slammed the monster into the wall, following with a long knife impaled through the little girl's body, the eight spider legs abruptly spread open amidst the trembling roar, then slowly lowered down, silent.
Having done all this, Xu Xiaoyou turned her head, Mori saw her, frozen, seemingly bursting with power from somewhere, breaking free from the webbing bonds quickly, covering her right eye transformed into a spider compound eye.
"You..."
Xu Xiaoyou said nothing, taking no time to examine Mori's appearance, turned her head, a long whip materializing in her hand.
The courtyard before her had descended into utter mayhem, monsters chasing, slaughtering unarmed ordinary people, numerous monsters gathering around a woman, dividing her body as it's scattered to the sky; she herself had witnessed numerous spider legs burst through the body of a cowering man on the ground, witnessed the terrified fleeing people from before transform to those monsters, joining the ranks.
"Fear Syndrome."
She finally understood what kind of hysteria she was infected with; if Anya hadn't fed her that vermilion medicine at the time, she would likely have become one of these monsters already.
Xu Xiaoyou again surveyed the courtyard, the fear on people's faces was so profound, yet so dull and destitute, as if they had long foreseen this day coming.
Who would have thought that the people of Chichu Heaven were all infected with such a terminal illness, was it the influence of the will of Eight-Spider Nest Mother?
How on earth did they survive up till now in such harsh conditions?
"What are you wearing..." Behind her, Mori changed the subject as she originally didn't want the other to see her in this state.
"Are you cosplaying as Dark Gold Rose?"
Xu Xiaoyou turned her head, saying earnestly:
"No, I am Dark Gold Rose."
