Traveler of the River of Time and Space

Chapter 12: Polaris 3 (Part 2)

"There's also food."

"But you might need to replenish it on the road."

This big monk usually appears carefree, but he's actually very meticulous. Just by looking at his preparations, Su Ziyu knew that he had already considered the current situation.

"Here." Jie Se pried open the crab claws and handed two pieces of roasted crab meat to Su Ying and Matty nearby, smiling and saying, "Careful, it's hot."

"I'll let Zhao Ang go back with you later."

"You can set off after collecting your bounty at Elk Camp."

The flavor was very fragrant and tender.

The taste was better than imagined. Su Ziyu had never enjoyed eating crab this much in his life. Just half of a crab claw was enough to fill one or two people. The two young girls were a bit stuffed, and Matty ate so much that she kept touching her belly, feeling that walking was a bit inconvenient.

"Don't eat any more."

"We'll take some back later." Su Ziyu's gaze showed a hint of sympathy.

It's indeed not easy for a fifteen or sixteen-year-old girl to survive alone in the Wasteland Era. Judging by her eating, she probably hadn't had a full meal for a long time.

"Take it back? Then I'll pick a few large ones." Matty stood up happily.

She had just walked away.

The young girl leaned next to Su Ziyu's ear, whispering, "Dad. Can we take Matty with us to Polaris?"

"She's all alone here too."

Hmm.

Su Ziyu thought for a moment and said, "Would she want to go? This trip to Polaris is not necessarily safer than staying at Elk Camp."

"She will." The young girl nodded confidently, saying, "I'll talk to her on the way."

Alright then.

If Matty wants to join, Su Ziyu feels they could bring her along anyway, since her life at Elk Camp would be just as difficult. Once Su Ziyu leaves, it might be hard for her to get by.

Time passed little by little.

After dinner, Su Ziyu bid farewell to Jie Se with a handshake, then drove a car back to Elk Camp with the young girl and Matty. Zhao Ang drove another car with one person, and by the time they returned, it was already midnight.

Max's tavern was still lit.

Collecting the bounty went smoothly for Su Ziyu, and upon noticing the two young girls were a bit sleepy, he took them to rest in the Chinese District.

A night without words.

Early the next morning, Su Ziyu saw two young girls already packed. He bought some food, then directly set off by car, first heading to a place called Corpse Demon Club. As he departed, Zhao Ang also went with a few people in a car; their destination was the Chinatown gathering place, as the water plant would definitely need material aid from over there to start.

The off-road vehicle modified by Jie Se performed well, and Su Ziyu drove it smoothly. The two young girls behind were whispering softly and quickly became drowsy, leaning against each other to sleep.

All around was an immensely desolate landscape.

Along the road, they occasionally passed some ruins, all remnants of old towns from bygone eras, with almost all resources collected, leaving only empty shells.

Driving from here to the Corpse Demon Club takes about a day. If nothing unforeseen occurs, heading to Polaris will likely take another two or three days.

Meanwhile.

In a foggy bay area, a sudden explosion broke out on a solitary island.

Boom, rumble.

Following the dull explosion sound, five or six warriors dressed in exoskeleton armor emerged from the fog, retreating while firing. Amidst the exploding flames, something vaguely appeared; giant creatures with bizarre tentacles.

"Dammit!"

"My exoskeleton armor is running out of energy." One of the warriors took off his helmet, turning his head, "Boss! Are there any nuclear fusion batteries left?"

At this moment, a steady male voice responded, "Let's retreat inside the island first."

"Those monsters are still nearby."

The team swiftly fell back into the island.

Inside the island, there was a massive ruin, seemingly an abandoned military base, beside which lay freshly dug graves. As the group passed here, their expressions turned somewhat sad.

"Leon."

"Did the distress signal really go out?" A slightly hoarse female voice sounded. She then took off her helmet, revealing a mature, beautiful face. She appeared very tired, speaking slowly, "The Brotherhood's rescue isn't here yet?"

"Our supplies can't hold out much longer."

The man leading the way took off his helmet too, responding sternly, "Pasha. Trust me."

"The distress signal was definitely sent."

"Supplies can last another week. There's an abandoned aircraft carrier nearby. In a couple of days, I'll lead a group over to see if we can find some resources."

A broken building appeared ahead.

Upon returning, they immediately heard suffering screams from within. Leon's face changed almost instantly, rushing in and pressing down a frenzied man, bellowing, "Bernie, calm down!"

"Don't mind those creepy sounds!"

"Look at me."

"Focus your spirit!"

Inside the rundown house, a burly man appeared utterly distressed, clutching his throat, his face flushed red, seeming utterly chaotic in spirit.

"He's already polluted by those ghostly things."

Pasha silently observed all this, then slowly drew her pistol from her waist, calmly saying, "Better give him mercy."

Leon knocked her pistol aside, eyes slightly red, angrily glaring at Pasha, then turned and knocked out the suffering man.

"Our supplies are dwindling."

"He's beyond saving." Another deep male voice stated, as a burly man fiddled with his firearms in a corner, slowly saying, "His fate will be the same as the others."

"Only by leaving this cursed place can we survive."

A brief, silent pause.

The man Leon knocked unconscious suddenly opened his eyes, pupils tinged with a touch of blood, expression distorted and hideous, face marked by blue veins like previously seen Living Corpse Ghosts, reaching for Leon's head.

Bang.

A gunshot rang out.

Leon. silently lowered his gun, turned quietly into another room.

Bang, bang, bang.

The room was filled with sounds of venting rage.

Pasha quietly observed, then pushed into another room. This room contained seven or eight sets of exoskeleton power armor, but the nuclear fusion battery sections were all removed, and a corner of the room was stained with old blood, long left uncleaned.

"I must survive."

"Xiao Ying is still waiting for me to return!... I have to get out alive!..." Pasha's expression showed a hint of pain. She covered her head murmuring.

Thin blue veins emerged beneath her neck, Pasha took out a syringe, directly injected it into the neck. Five to six minutes later, her expression gradually calmed down.

The heavy exoskeleton power armor was removed. Pasha, feeling fatigued, sat on the bedside, taking out a heart-shaped pendant.

Inside was a photo of Su Ying, looking younger, around seven or eight years old.

The young girl smiled brightly, like an angel descended to earth.

Pasha stared at the photo for a while, then got up and took off her combat uniform, revealing white bionic arms. Unlike those crude mechanical limbs, Pasha's unveiled form appeared almost indistinguishable from normal humans, even the joints resembling closely alike. However, beneath the flesh-colored bionic skin, her bones were entirely replaced with tough alloy.

The whole team, originally sixty to seventy people, only five survived till now, all having undergone some degree of bionic transformation.

Everyone else was dead.
