Wasteland Commander

Chapter 182: Winter Corpse Tide

The scene is amidst a mountain range, and the War Hawk's vision is vast, yet almost everything it captures is zombies!

The number of zombies is nearly impossible to estimate, but from above, it's clear they're everywhere.

And it's not just zombies; there are countless Mutated Birds, and even a place that's hard to see clearly, but it should be some kind of Mutant Beast, crawling in front of the zombie horde.

This was the first time Ye Fan saw Mutated Birds, Mutant Beasts, and zombies together.

If it were just zombies, they could be dealt with; based on the current mutations, they don't pose a deadly threat to human bases, especially to the fortified defenses of the Dawn Army.

But Mutant Beasts are different. Ye Fan still remembers how terrifying those Mutant Beasts were when attacking the zoo.

That was in the early days of the apocalypse; now, over a hundred days have passed, and who knows what new abilities the Mutant Beasts have developed.

Especially the Mutated Birds, which can attack the garrison directly by leaping over the city walls, certainly posing a great challenge to the defense.

Birds, beasts, and humans combined; without a doubt, such a massive zombie horde must have a commanding-type zombie.

Ye Fan was even a bit worried; if this scale of zombie horde was heading towards Dawn City, could Dawn City withstand it?

"Doesn't the Divine Dragon Army know that zombies have gone to their home base? Why are they attacking us?"

"It seems their path and the zombies' path just happened to miss each other; the zombies went through the mountains, so they are unaware."

Ye Fan sighed slightly.

Reaping the fruits of one's own deeds, it looks like the Divine Dragon Army is doomed.

Their home is about to be wiped out, and they're boldly heading to Dawn City; they won't stand a chance.

However, Ye Fan didn't want them to get close to Dawn City.

There are tanks and artillery there; getting close to Dawn City will definitely cause destruction.

"Liu Chengjun, immediately lead the armored unit to strike; don't let the Divine Dragon Army get within thirty kilometers of our city."

Liu Chengjun was somewhat expectant: "Sir, can the Air Force cooperate with me, paratroopers, gunships, and Combat Helicopters coordinating with our actions? I am confident to leave all of the Divine Dragon Army in the wilderness."

Ye Fan thought for a moment: "Try not to reach that point; if we can get them to retreat, that's best, considering their home is about to be lost, yet they're still in the dark. If they don't listen, then fight to make them retreat, but try to let them go back to provide support, hoping they can still make it in time. Otherwise, the twenty thousand people at Crane City Base might all become zombie fodder."

Liu Chengjun nodded to show he understood and immediately led the troops out.

Twenty tanks, forty armored vehicles, twenty cannons, and twenty D-66 rocket launchers.

And twenty double-linked high machines, all brought to the battlefield by Liu Chengjun.

This time, the Dawn Army had almost no infantry, only mechanized units.

Those cannons and D-66 rocket launchers were towed by vehicles, advancing at a very fast speed.

After Liu Chengjun left, Ye Fan knew that even though Dawn City seemed as solid as a rock, it might not be so secure.

The doom of the Divine Dragon Army was already set, the only suspense was how many could escape, but after the Divine Dragon Army, what's next?

The increasingly formidable zombie horde had begun to follow in humanity's footsteps to attack, and Dawn City would likely face a severe test.

The army of Dawn City was already considered strong, but its air defense was apparently rather weak.

In the upcoming battles, Ye Fan must prioritize air defense facilities.

On the northern snowfields, the convoy of the Divine Dragon Army crossed the border of Crane City and Huacheng.

Exiting Crane City meant leaving the mountains, and the road became wider.

Now the mountain roads were extremely difficult, with the winter snow blocking them completely. If not for the snowplows clearing the way at Crane City's side, the convoy could very well be trapped deep in the mountains.

This was only thanks to just two heavy snowfalls this winter. If there were a third, with temperatures dropping further, the wilderness would truly become a forbidden zone for human survival.

The two leading figures of the convoy sat in a jeep, with the air conditioning on, yet it was still unbearably cold.

There was a thick layer of frost on the car windows, and the windshield wipers were frozen, leaving someone to occasionally scrape off the frost from the windshield to maintain visibility.

"Damn it, this winter is killing us; it's only morning and already minus thirty-five degrees."

"Yes, and there's no wind yet. If it snows and the wind picks up, the temperature might drop ten more degrees, and then it's truly a killer cold."

"Let's hope our attack on Dawn City goes smoothly. Once we take it, we can finally rest a bit."

"Yeah, that Ye Fan is too arrogant, thinking the north is his domain, even daring to touch our Divine Dragon Army. Leader Jiang has ordered that anyone daring to resist should be completely eradicated, to wake them up thoroughly."

Someone in the car lit a cigarette, opened the window slightly, and shivered as the cold air rushed in.

"Hurry up back there, after this stretch, it's Wild Bee Valley. At night, light up your fires and roast all the meat you brought; by tomorrow morning, we'll reach Dawn City!"

He shouted through the radio, receiving some responses, clearly indicating the terrible weather had dampened everyone's spirits.

"Damn it, everyone's so lifeless!"

This leader put down the radio, feeling slightly displeased.

The person next to him wanted to say something comforting when suddenly a voice came through the radio.

"Second Leader, there's a plane overhead!"

The Second Leader opened the window and looked up.

He saw a large helicopter flying above, with leaflets fluttering down.

Someone picked up a leaflet and showed it to him.

He merely glanced at it before shredding it immediately!

"This is bullshit! Saying that hundreds of thousands of zombies are attacking our Divine Dragon Army base, we've only been out for two days, where would the zombies come from? Those idiots in the same place all the time, how could they know to attack us? The Dawn Army is just being mysterious."

The person next to him also picked up a leaflet and glanced at it before speaking: "Second Leader, this is just the Dawn Army's trick, probably trying to intimidate us, to force us to retreat."

The second-in-command sneered, "Well, they've made a miscalculation. We've already arrived here, so how could we retreat easily? Pass the order, all units accelerate the advance, rest early today, and launch a surprise attack on the Dawn Army at dawn tomorrow!"

"What about the planes in the sky?"

"Don't we have man-portable air-defense missiles? Take them down for me!"

Someone with a man-portable missile got off the vehicle, but the Dawn Army's planes were prepared. They quickly left after dropping leaflets, not giving them the chance.

The second-in-command cursed and ordered the troops to continue advancing.

Liu Chengjun sat on the Iron Armor, observing the response of the Divine Dragon Army, with a cold smile at the corner of his mouth.

"The Commander-in-Chief instructed me to spare them a little if possible, but now it seems the Divine Dragon Army is too blinded to heed our warnings and is even speeding up. They can't blame me now."

Han Haoyu, the driver of the first armored vehicle, was in charge of driving the Iron Armor.

Three-Star's armored troops are experienced, and Liu Chengjun had transferred them to operate the Iron Armor.

"Commander Liu, I think there's a reason for their stubbornness. First, they see us as enemies and don't believe anything we say; second, they think they've got us cornered, which is why they're advancing so arrogantly. If we could strike them hard, make them truly feel the pain, maybe they'd finally listen to us."

Liu Chengjun chuckled, "What you said aligns with what I've been thinking. Since we're taking action, let there be no hesitation."

With that, Liu Chengjun issued an order.

"Inform the demolition team to blow up the mountains on the road ahead and block them for a while, then have the artillery unit ready to give them a taste of cannon fire!"

"I'll personally send a message to the superior, since we have the gunships equipped, let's not hold back. Send them over to support us, and send all five combat helicopters too. Crush the Divine Dragon Army in one sweep, break their spirits, and make them cry!"

Crane City.

Divine Dragon Army Base.

For most large bases, the location is typically near an airport.

Firstly, because the area around an airport is generally open, neither too far nor too close to the city, making operations convenient.

Secondly, if there's potential for developing an air force in the future, the airport can be put to use.

Crane City is no exception, with the base established on an airport sixty kilometers from the city center.

Though not far from the city, no zombies have ever come to harass this area.

The only trouble occasionally comes from mutated birds swooping from the mountains, which are generally shot down by the garrison.

This relatively comfortable environment has lowered the guards' alertness.

The base's wall is only 3.5 meters high, with a width of merely 80 centimeters.

People can barely walk on it for patrols.

Some even think the 3.5-meter wall is unnecessary. Since no zombies ever come, why go to the trouble of building a wall?

Currently, there aren't even any guards stationed on the wall.

The weather is so cold that in three minutes, the cold wind has penetrated even the thick coats, who would endure that on the wall.

At the sentry post near the wall, a few guards gathered to drink.

Hotpot.

There's not much to eat in winter, just some cabbage, tofu, and vermicelli. Add some meat and chili, and that's a hotpot.

Everyone had some white liquor to resist the cold. In three hours, shifts would change, and they could return to the barracks to sleep.

"Come on, let's have a toast!"

A bearded soldier leaned back in his chair, raising his glass to propose a drink.

The guards raised their cups, clinking them together.

The fiery white liquor warmed their bellies.

"Captain, shouldn't we go out to have a look?"

The weather was too cold, and the windows were completely covered in frost; they couldn't see outside from the sentry post.

The bearded man glared at him, "So eager, go if you want. I'm not going anywhere."

The one who spoke said nothing further, taking a bite of tofu, "Then I won't go either."

"Exactly, in this crappy weather, not even ghosts want to go out, what's there to see?"

The bearded man picked up his cup again, squinting slightly, "Maybe in a couple of days, we could go to Dawn Army's city. It's much more comfortable there."

The surrounding people echoed, joking and laughing, creating a lively atmosphere.

The guard who had suggested going out slightly perked up his ears.

"Captain, it sounds like there's something flapping, like a bird's wings?"

"Haha! Flapping wings, is it flying freely?"

With that, the bearded man started singing, "Flying freely in your heart... "

The others joined in, clapping to the beat, laughing and chatting.

Just as the song was reaching its climax, suddenly the glass behind the bearded man shattered!

Crash~~~!

Shards of glass flew, cutting the faces of several men, but that wasn't the main issue: a giant mutant bird burst through the broken glass into the room!

And thus, disaster struck!
