Wasteland Commander

Chapter 255: Supporting the Puppet

On the morning of March 10th, Ye Fan flew out of Dawn City.

This time, the abandoned town Guo Zhun chose is not far from Ice City, Dawn City, and the Daqing Mountain Prison Base, just over 200 kilometers away from Dawn City.

At the Dawn City airport, the pilots of four fighter jets were in the cabins, ready to take off at any time.

In case anything happens with Ye Fan, the jets can arrive within ten minutes.

Ye Fan also brought enough protection for himself, a guard company's combat strength, which is more than a standard battalion's worth.

After leaving Dawn City, the helicopter reached the negotiation site in about half an hour.

Upon reaching the outskirts of the town, Ye Fan could see a convoy on the ground from a distance, so he immediately signaled the plane to land.

As Ye Fan's plane landed, the convoy also came to a halt.

When Ye Fan got off the plane and saw the people from the convoy, he recognized them immediately.

The leader of the Daqing Mountain Prison Base, Yan Zhihuan.

They both have TV stations and have appeared on television, so they are somewhat familiar with each other.

Seeing Ye Fan, Yan Zhihuan immediately wore a smile that didn't reach his eyes.

"Leader Ye, we finally meet. Are you here to compete for second place this time?"

Ye Fan didn't like Yan Zhihuan.

The previous leader of the prison base, Hu Yuan, was taken down by Shen Ruihui, and later Yan Zhihuan took over as leader.

But Yan Zhihuan is no easy person, he even cooperated with Guo Zhun, planning an assassination attempt on Ye Fan. Xu Weiwei and others came from the prison base during that show.

In essence, this person is just a lackey of Guo Zhun.

Ye Fan had already made up his mind to take over the prison base at an appropriate time to eliminate instability within the province.

This time's election for Alliance Leader requires a base population of over 200,000 for eligibility. There are only four candidates in the province: Guo Zhun, Ye Fan, Li Yuntian, and Yan Zhihuan.

But in Ye Fan's view, Yan Zhihuan is basically just there to accompany the rankings; how could a lackey overtake the boss to rise up?

After their assassination plan failed, Yan Zhihuan became quite honest for a while, but now he seems to think his boss's rise is a sure thing and so he's become arrogant in front of him again.

In the face of his minor provocations, Ye Fan just smiled faintly: "So, Leader Yan is determined to become the Alliance Leader?"

Yan Zhihuan's expression changed suddenly: "What nonsense, Leader Guo is highly respected, he is the best choice for the Alliance Leader."

"But it doesn't seem that's necessarily the case!"

Ye Fan had already noticed Yan Zhihuan's slight dissatisfaction, it seems this person isn't content being a puppet either.

His rise was entirely manipulated by Guo Zhun, who even stationed troops at the prison base.

However, on the eve of the Little One leading the zombie horde to attack the city, the stationed troops leader Zhou Qing was called to Dawn City by Guo Zhun for a show, but unexpectedly the Little One turned up suddenly, and Zhou Qing couldn't return, now he has become a member of Dawn City.

Even for this election, Ye Fan brought Zhou Qing along, as he thought it might come in handy.

Ye Fan didn't want to be the Alliance Leader; he didn't plan to meddle in the affairs of the entire province because he had decided that when Dawn City grew strong enough, he would leave here and establish a second base.

Dawn City, neither by the sea nor by the Great River, couldn't build shipyards, making it destined not to be a place to stay long.

But upon seeing Yan Zhihuan, Ye Fan suddenly had a new thought: Guo Zhun's election benefits no one, but if the weakest Yan Zhihuan were elected, letting him and Guo Zhun tear each other apart wouldn't be bad either.

"Leader Yan, you're overthinking it. I have no interest in becoming the Alliance Leader, but I think the Daqing Mountain Prison Base is easy to defend and hard to attack, strategically important. You being the Alliance Leader would be nice too."

"Ah! Leader Ye really thinks so?"

Yan Zhihuan's face immediately lit up with surprise, his greedy expression instantly surfacing.

Ye Fan nodded lightly: "I think it's feasible."

"This... this I'm afraid I can't do."

Yan Zhihuan rubbed his hands in excitement, looking both expectant and hesitant, clearly still rather afraid of Guo Zhun.

Ye Fan wasn't in a hurry and directly called Zhou Qing over.

"This is an old friend of Leader Yan's. He has defected from the Liberation Army, showing how unpopular the Liberation Army is. Leader Yan can talk to him, his attitude represents mine. I believe during the meeting, he will give Leader Yan a surprise."

After speaking, Ye Fan got up and left, leaving Zhou Qing and Yan Zhihuan there to mutter amongst themselves.

Listening to Zhou Qing's words, the reluctance and surprise on Yan Zhihuan's face grew heavier.

He knew this was his only chance to completely break free from Guo Zhun's control, and he had already decided to take a gamble.

Ye Fan paid him no further heed, proceeding with his people into the abandoned town.

The town already had quite a few people by this time, some of whom Ye Fan had even seen a few days ago.

The modes of transportation they arrived in were varied, including large trucks, off-road vehicles, and even some civilian helicopters.

Upon seeing Ye Fan, many people took the initiative to greet him; after all, Ye Fan was now a well-known figure in the province.

Ye Fan merely nodded in response and then went to rest near the large tent where the meeting was to be held.

During this time, he also saw Li Yuntian from Oil City. Li Yuntian was a middle-aged man who merely snorted coldly upon seeing Ye Fan and didn't talk to him.

After a while, Guo Zhun finally made his appearance.

A total of ten helicopters, making quite a grand entrance.

Guo Zhun disembarked from the helicopter and approached surrounded by a crowd of people.

He was dressed in a splendid general's uniform, with military medals whose origins were unknown adorning his chest. The shoulder badges on his shoulders were hanging with tassels, and he had a handlebar mustache, appearing quite ostentatious.

Upon arriving, Guo Zhun invited everyone into the large tent that had been set up in advance and unceremoniously took the main seat.

There were reporters behind him, who immediately took a series of photos.

"Everyone, please take your seats."

This was a long table, with Guo Zhun in the center, Ye Fan on the left, and Li Yuntian on the right. Below Ye Fan was Yan Zhihuan, and the rest were arranged according to the size of their bases, with a total of eleven people participating in the meeting.

There should also have been representatives from the Hot Spring Base in Forest City, but Lin Xiaona and her group were captured, so there were only eleven people present.

The populations of these bases all exceeded twenty thousand, with several even surpassing one hundred thousand.

Seeing everyone had arrived, Guo Zhun finally spoke.

"Leaders from across the province, Mr. Guo is very pleased to meet you all. In this already shattered world, it's a joy to see so many talented individuals, indeed."

He spoke with a typical leader's emphasis, which made Ye Fan smile coldly.

"Today, everyone knows why they were gathered here, so Mr. Guo won't waste words. Today we are electing the alliance leader for the entire province. There are four candidates, namely myself, Leader Ye, In Li's Hand, and Leader Yan. Everyone is encouraged to speak freely to select the alliance leader who will lead the survivors across our province to act together, eliminate the zombies, and strive to restore our homes as soon as possible."

After Guo Zhun finished, one leader immediately echoed beside him: "Is there even a need for an election? Leader Guo has led the Liberation Army to recapture the Jiangbei Region, annihilating over ten million zombies in the process. This achievement is unmatched in the entire province. Even from a strength perspective, the 80,000 Liberation Army under Leader Guo's command is the province's largest armed force. If you don't become the alliance leader, I, Old Yang, won't accept it!"

These were Guo Zhun's planted followers, long since won over, now coming out in support, which everyone knew fully well, but no one said anything.

Because objectively speaking, he was indeed telling the truth.

After Old Yang spoke, others immediately expressed their support, and soon, three leaders spoke one after another.

Seeing the situation under control, Guo Zhun was quite proud, his handlebar mustache curling slightly upward as he looked at Yan Zhihuan below Ye Fan.

This was his subordinate, who should have been coming out to cheer him on now.

Yan Zhihuan met Guo Zhun's gaze, swallowed his saliva, and spoke the bravest words.

"There are more than one candidate; I think anyone has a chance. For instance, I can also volunteer myself."

As soon as he finished speaking, many were shocked; no one expected him, being one of Guo Zhun's underlings, to nominate himself!

Guo Zhun's face immediately darkened: "Yan Zhihuan, do you know what you're saying?"

Yan Zhihuan, also a ruthless person, decided not to hold back now: "I nominate myself for election."

Guo Zhun was angered to laughter, glaring at Ye Fan first. If not for the aid to Dawn City, which led to Zhou Qing not being able to return, he wouldn't have lost control over the prison base, and would Yan Zhihuan dare speak to him like this?

But he was even more infuriated by Yan Zhihuan's overestimation of himself, saying coldly: "Do you think anyone would support you?"

Before Yan Zhihuan could answer, someone suddenly stood up behind him; it was Zhou Qing.

Many present recognized Zhou Qing, including Li Yuntian, and knew he was once under Guo Zhun, so they became interested at once.

Facing Guo Zhun's accusing gaze, Zhou Qing was unafraid, speaking directly: "Leader Guo, there's no need to look at me like that. It was you who originally sent me to Dawn City to put on a show. When zombies attacked the city, you told me to die to save face for you, and from that moment, I was no longer under you."

With that said, Zhou Qing began to reveal more.

"During his tenure as the leader of Ice City, Guo Zhun repeatedly committed cruel and even inhumane acts."

"If he fancied someone's woman, he would unabashedly seize her, even kill her lover—his hands stained with blood."

"When collecting supplies, he would bring survivors along, only to abandon them to attract zombies at signs of danger so he could escape with his people."

"Don't assume your bases are safe. Let me tell you, Guo Zhun has undercover operatives in your bases. His means of communication... carrier pigeons. Think back and see if anyone in your base is keeping pigeons. If they are, you can catch them when you return!"

When Zhou Qing mentioned the first and second points, there wasn't much reaction from everyone, as many had committed wrongdoings; it's the post-apocalypse—who hasn't killed someone?

But the third point thoroughly infuriated them.

On recalling, wasn't there indeed someone keeping pigeons in the base? It could even be the most trusted person.

The faces of many base leaders turned pale, and things that had been unclear now suddenly became understandable.

A good number of people started looking at Guo Zhun less favorably.
