Wasteland Commander

Chapter 263: Bombardment!

The explosive engineers set off from City Hall, leaving a trail of deadly destruction in their wake.

City Hall is located at the center of the entire Hai Shan Wei, surrounded by several important buildings.

Warehouse, TV station, bank, police station, power plant...

These key locations within the city center have all become targets for the explosive engineers.

This time, the bombs didn't need long timers; as long as they could get away after setting them up, it was enough.

Rikov just learned about the chaos beginning in the city when he arrived at the gates of the concentration camp with his regiment.

The resistance inside the camp was fierce; Dawn Army paratroopers had seized all key positions within the camp.

All the high points, as well as many hidden spots, became battlefields for the Dawn Army, launching fierce counterattacks on the Rakshasa Soldiers.

The gate there was completely blocked, even armored vehicles couldn't get through.

Tanks could have gone in, but there were no tank deployments within the city; the tanks were all stationed on the riverfront frontline.

Lack of assault power resulted in a weak offensive; a regiment of soldiers battled against four or five hundred of the Dawn Army, resulting in a trench warfare stalemate.

As Rikov was hoarsely commanding, explosions started in the city.

Intermittent ground-shaking booms came, bad news pouring into Rikov's ears one after another.

"Report, General! The TV station has been destroyed!"

"Report, General! The power plant was attacked, with 70% of the city losing power!"

"Report, General! The logistics warehouse was attacked, our entire company of garrison has been wiped out, the Dawn Army is currently burning the warehouse!"

"Report, General! The bank vault was attacked, over thirty of our people are dead, fewer than twenty remain defending the vault, requesting reinforcements, requesting reinforcements!"

"Report, General! City Hall is on fire; Miss Xiaoyu is missing!"

Rikov was overwhelmed by the bad news, especially upon hearing that City Hall was on fire; he could no longer focus on commanding the battle.

"Immediately inform the Riverfront troops, summon a brigade to support the city, and order the two regiments heading to the airport to return immediately!"

The guards quickly relayed the orders, while a nearby staff officer hesitated, "General, the regiments heading to the airport can return, but relocating the Riverfront troops will leave the defenses vulnerable."

"You numbskull! The enemy won't attack from the riverfront at all; it's freezing and the Great River is like a thoroughfare. Otherwise, where did so many of the Dawn Army come from?"

The staff officer was silent, but he still instructed soldiers to call in reinforcements, allowing the garrison troops on the anti-aircraft positions to come over, leaving only those necessary to operate the missile and anti-aircraft gun systems.

Under normal circumstances, this decision would be fine, but it rendered the anti-aircraft positions vulnerable inside.

If it were any other opponent, they might find it hard to notice this situation, but the Dawn Army had spy satellites.

As a brigade from the riverfront returned to the city to quell the uprising, the main forces of the Dawn Army, long ambushed nearby, finally moved.

The Dawn Army's First Field Corps, in coordination with the armored units, launched a fierce attack on the anti-aircraft positions.

The regiment commander Wang Hu had been lurking here for two days, growing impatient, watching the battles at the airport and within the city heat up, feeling like his heart was being gnawed at.

Upon receiving the attack order, Wang Hu immediately commanded his troops, "Full-scale attack!"

Infantrymen boarded armored vehicles and transport trucks, following behind a hundred tanks of the armored battalion, quickly charging toward the enemy's anti-aircraft positions.

The Riverfront anti-aircraft position was a focus for the Rakshasa team to develop, containing dozens of missile launch silos and over a hundred anti-aircraft guns and numerous anti-aircraft machine guns.

These weapons were operated by a whole battalion, usually with a regiment and two additional battalions serving as guards.

Now, as the city was under attack, that regiment and one of the battalions were all pulled back to the city.

Leaving only two battalions of soldiers to defend this place.

The Dawn Army deployed an armored battalion alongside a main corps, with soldiers numbering several times that of the opponents; this was an asymmetrical battle.

The gates of the anti-aircraft positions were easily breached under the tanks' bombardment, with even several sections of the electrified wall being destroyed.

Tank units fired their cannons, while the machine guns onboard continuously spewed fire, mowing down rows of enemies as if they were cutting grass.

The enemy dared not confront the Dawn Army's tanks head-on, opting instead to disperse, dissolve into smaller units, and utilize the terrain to engage in guerrilla warfare.

But before they could fully deploy their guerrilla tactics, the soldiers of Dawn Army's First Corps arrived by vehicle.

The soldiers disembarked in unison, quickly occupying strategic points under Wang Hu's command, launching full-scale annihilation against the scattered enemies.

Meanwhile, among the ranks, the explosive engineers charged towards the anti-aircraft positions, placing bombs in the missile silos and anti-aircraft gun mounts.

Those that couldn't be taken were destroyed wherever possible.

Anti-aircraft machine guns, military vehicles, and mobile anti-aircraft guns that could be seized were all captured.

Even though Dawn Army's weapons were excellent, many on the market still considered Rakshasa's military craftsmanship strong, and these weapons could still fetch a good price when sold.

Gunfire and explosions echoed through the night sky like popcorn, as the Dawn Army pushed relentlessly along the riverfront anti-aircraft positions, continuously destroying them.

The sudden events and the Rakshasa's depleted forces resulted in disastrous consequences; within a mere twenty minutes, the riverfront anti-aircraft positions were nearly wiped out.

As the position was predominantly destroyed, the Dawn Air Force arrived within a minute.

Communicators from various units were consistently maintaining contact and communication, with radar station soldiers constantly monitoring the radar screens.

They were waiting for this moment, waiting for the enemy's air defense positions to be completely destroyed.

In this way, the Rakshasa Team, without fighter jets, would completely lose air superiority.

Now stationed along the riverfront, there is still a brigade plus a regiment of troops.

This includes armored units, artillery units, and other heavy firepower units.

The air defense positions were attacked, and ten minutes later they received orders for the armored units and artillery units, as well as two infantry regiments, to move for support.

For this, the Brigade Commander Vikrov of the First Brigade of the Rakshasa Army personally led the team to provide support to the air defense positions.

He did not consider this a particularly difficult task. The attacking troops were confirmed to be the Dawn Army, and from what he understood, the entire Dawn Army combined did not even make up a full brigade.

Despite their current large commotion, it was all due to surprise attacks.

For example, at the airport and in the city, they struck with surprise and to this day do not dare to face the Rakshasa Team head-on.

The reason is simple—their numbers are insufficient.

Only at the airport, it is said that the Dawn Army committed nearly three thousand soldiers, which should be the main force of the Dawn Army.

And the two regiments and an armored battalion he led, combined, had a force of five thousand five hundred troops.

He believed that with the forces at his disposal, he could absolutely crush the Dawn Army attacking the air defense positions into pieces—he had this confidence.

So, before departing, Vikrov even made a military pledge to Rikov.

"Rest assured, General, if I do not annihilate the main force of the Dawn Army, I shall return to see you with my head!"

But he didn't expect the Dawn Army's air force to arrive so quickly.

Vikrov's team had just left the positions when they heard the faint sound of aircraft engines above.

Vikrov stopped in confusion; he was an old soldier, having been in the military even before the apocalypse, and could even identify roughly what model of aircraft it was from the engine noise.

"This engine sound... why does it sound like our White Bear Bomber?"

"Immediately contact the radar station to identify the incoming plane model."

The communications officer quickly got in touch with the radar station.

The radar station along the riverfront quickly identified the model of the incoming aircraft.

"Report to Brigade Commander Vikrov, the aircraft model has been confirmed; it's our White Bear Bomber!"

Vikrov was visibly excited upon hearing the voice from the walkie-talkie.

"Excellent! Our planes have come to support us, hahaha! You Dawn Army scumbags, now you'll taste the wrath of carpet bombing!"

Just as Vikrov was exuberant, the next words from the radar station quickly wiped the smile off his face.

"Brigade Commander, although they're White Bear Bombers, there are five of them."

Upon hearing this, Vikrov was taken aback and then realized something was amiss.

Although the White Bear Bomber was their nation's aircraft, there was, to his knowledge, only one in the entire Hai Shan Wei.

And this single aircraft was still in the hangar's manufacturing workshop, not yet rolled out, and the airport had just been attacked.

Even if that one plane survived, where did these five planes come from?

Could it be that other survivor bases in the homeland had manufactured planes that came to their aid?

No, that's impossible!

Vikrov instinctively dismissed this notion; he had never heard of other bases in the homeland manufacturing bombers, and even if there were, they couldn't have arrived so quickly.

"From which direction did the planes come?"

"Southwest."

Hearing this sentence, Vikrov's heart sank.

It was over! Even if it were reinforcements, they couldn't come from that direction; those coming from there could only be the Dawn Army.

It was too late to think about these matters now; the previously faint engine noise was now very loud, and the enemy planes were about to arrive.

"Disperse! Everyone, disperse!"

The sharp alarm whistle sounded from the communications officer's side, but it was already too late.

The back-and-forth conversation delayed their escape time, and the planes of the Dawn Army were already overhead.

Due to the Rakshasa Team's lack of air superiority, the planes of the Dawn Army were extremely bold.

They practically flew overhead at a height of 500 meters, their high speed rendering anti-aircraft guns ineffective against them.

The aircraft's cabin doors opened, and strings of bombs rained down from the sky!

Boom! Boom! Boom~~~!

In an instant, the troops led by Vikrov were engulfed in a sea of fire!
