Wasteland Commander

Chapter 303: Shuang'Er's Transformation

Early the next morning, Ye Fan brought Shuang'Er to the morning market in Dawn City.

The morning market is the place with the most earthly atmosphere, especially with many northern snacks.

Steamed buns, tea eggs, lamb soup, pancakes, fried dough sticks, soy milk.... and tofu pudding that you can't tell if it's sweet or salty.

Shuang'Er's curious big eyes wandered around, finding everything intriguing.

Firstly, she came from the south, so she was curious about the north.

Secondly, why did she feel that everyone here seemed to be living happily?

This was unlike any place she had been to, including Jiangzhou.

After breakfast, the two continued on their path of spot-checking.

Every time they reached a place, Ye Fan would park the car and wait, letting Shuang'Er search for problems herself and discover issues.

Shuang'Er had quite the perseverance; she hadn't forgotten her purpose for coming here and visited over twenty places in one day.

She went to the trading market in the city, observed the bustling trading situation there, and felt that people were very happy making money.

She went to the Dawn Grand Theater and watched a half-stage rehearsal there, where the actors and actresses rehearsed programs that seemed like pre-apocalyptic song and dance performances.

She visited Dawn City's banks and saw people working in an orderly fashion, with bank employees in uniforms feeling no different from those before the apocalypse.

She went to the car sales department, the commercial street, the material recycling center...

All day long, Shuang'Er didn't argue with anyone; she just used her eyes to observe and discover.

When she returned to Ye Fan's car that night, Ye Fan sensed her mood was low again.

"How did it go today? Did you find any problems with Ye Fan?"

Shuang'Er shook her head gently, "I didn't find any problems. Ye Fan seems very good to his residents, even better than where I live."

Ye Fan continued to encourage her: "Well, maybe not. Ye Fan might be kind to Qin Han People but not necessarily to foreigners. There are many foreigners in Dawn City. You could visit the foreigner districts to take a look. A narrow-minded nationalist will not win the future."

Shuang'Er looked at Chen Bufan with her big eyes for a moment and thought that even if he wasn't good to foreigners, it didn't seem like a huge problem.

Jiangzhou over there was originally a developed area, with many foreigners, and quite a few were arrogant, which has already formed a significant force.

But she hadn't forgotten her task, knowing full well why she came all this way.

Now that she couldn't find her teammates, she had to complete the task on her own, and she felt that she should have a just cause.

She didn't want to harm good people, so she must find a problem.

Nodding, she agreed to Ye Fan's suggestion.

......

On the third day, Ye Fan first went shopping and then gave Shuang'Er a beautiful set of clothes.

A light pink trench coat, a pair of khaki trousers, and a pair of black calf-leather shoes.

He bought her a girlish satchel, which also contained ten thousand Light Yuan of pocket money.

Shuang'Er did not refuse since her clothes indeed needed changing. According to the prices of these goods, she wrote an IOU for Ye Fan.

After changing clothes, Shuang'Er was stunning enough to be framed in a painting, easily mastering any style of outfit.

Shuang'Er tied her long hair directly at the back, refusing Ye Fan's suggestion for pigtails, feeling that she was no longer a child, and pigtails were too childish.

Following Ye Fan, they set off again, this time reaching the Rakshasa community.

Shuang'Er had been staying at a hotel these days watching TV every night.

Dawn TV Station often reported on things inside and outside the city, and she knew quite a lot.

Including the matter of the Dawn Army capturing Hai Shan Wei, imprisoning nearly a hundred thousand Rakshasa and bringing them to Dawn City.

Shuang'Er looked eagerly and decided to take a look.

Soon, they arrived at the Rakshasa community.

Taking into account ethnic living habits, Dawn City specifically allocated about five square kilometers to build a complex for the Rakshasa community.

Regarding their customs, dietary habits, beliefs, etc., Dawn City made no restrictions; everything was free.

When they got there, it happened to be a wedding of a Rakshasa family.

This time, Ye Fan also got out of the car and directly brought Shuang'Er into the banquet.

Although they didn't know these Rakshasa, they were still warmly welcomed.

The Rakshasa groom came over to toast and gave them a thumbs-up.

"Come, I'll offer you a drink, you are from Dawn City, we are also from Dawn City, we are all one family."

Shuang'Er held up her glass and asked, "Won't you return to Rakshasa?"

The groom shook his head directly, "No, Dawn City is too good, much better than our hometown, and Leader Ye Fan does not reject foreigners. We can find jobs here, earn Light Yuan, and the police said anyone who lives here for a year without a criminal record can get a Dawn City resident ID card."

The bride also came over with a smile, "Qin Han is a multi-ethnic country. Our people have lived here before, and we are willing to be a part of the minority here."

Ye Fan clinked glasses with the groom and bride, drinking his glass of wine in one go.

Shuang'Er also drank her wine, then seemed somewhat preoccupied.

Luckily, this moment was short, as there was a bonfire party that night. As Ye Fan and Shuang'Er were the only two Qin Han People, they received a warm reception. Everyone drank together, ate barbecue, large rye bread, and caviar.

The Rakshasa's wine was quite good, and under rounds of bombardment, both Ye Fan and Shuang'Er were having a hard time holding their liquor.

That night, they were both a bit tipsy.

On the way back, Ye Fan didn't drive but walked back to the hotel with Shuang'Er.

On the road, perhaps because of the alcohol, Shuang'Er was chattier than usual.

An Adventurer's truck raced through the street, and Ye Fan quickly pulled Shuang'Er aside to avoid it.

Shuang'Er held Ye Fan's hand and giggled.

Seeing the little dimples on her fair face, Ye Fan thought today's wine was truly intoxicating.

"Chen Bufan, where are we going tomorrow?"

Shuang'Er held onto Ye Fan's hand, wobbling as she walked, asking him in a cheerful tone.

Ye Fan pondered for a while, "Tomorrow... tomorrow we should visit the hospital. Whether a city is good or not is determined by its infrastructure, and a hospital is one of the most important components. Any place that can't even solve its people's medical needs can't be considered a good city."

"Okay, I'll go with you."

Shuang'Er's tone was light, and unknowingly, her obsession with picking fights seemed to have dissipated quite a bit.

......

Another night passed, and the next day Ye Fan brought Shuang'Er to the Dawn City War Hospital.

The hospital's director and chief were all medical soldiers from the Dawn Army.

The people from the Military Intelligence Bureau had come beforehand, so everyone knew how to cooperate.

Ye Fan and Shuang'Er came here under the pretense of having a physical exam for Shuang'Er.

The Dawn Army's war hospital didn't have as many tedious procedures as hospitals before the apocalypse, and the doctors here were very skilled—they could diagnose issues with a simple pulse check.

Shuang'Er's health was not just good, it was exceptionally good.

The doctor told Ye Fan her body was in optimal condition, better than he had ever seen.

Of course, Ye Fan knew this. As a Level 3 Mutant, she was almost never sick, only possibly injured.

Her body's aging was even delayed, which was an advantage of being a mutant.

After the check-up, Ye Fan took Shuang'Er to the obstetrics and gynecology department.

When they arrived, Shuang'Er widened her eyes.

"Is there... is there a baby being born here?"

Ye Fan nodded, "Today is the day the first baby in Dawn City is being born. I wanted to bring you to see it."

"Is there really a baby being born? I've never seen such a thing! It seems like nothing like this has happened since the apocalypse."

It had been about ten months since the apocalypse started.

A normal pregnancy takes about nine months from conception to delivery, and after the apocalypse, almost no one had the mind to have children.

Babies had very weak immunity and it was difficult for them to survive in such uncertain conditions.

Even if someone got pregnant occasionally, they would try to find a way to terminate it because no one had the energy to raise a child.

Even in a place like Jiangzhou, no babies had been born yet.

There were pregnancies, but none had reached full term yet.

Shuang'Er stood in front of the obstetrics department, watching as a nurse emerged carrying a child.

"It's a girl, seven pounds and two ounces. Who wants to hold her first?"

The family had long been prepared, with one elderly woman saying, "The first person to hold the baby should be pretty, so the child will grow up beautiful."

The child's father looked around quickly, spotting Shuang'Er almost instantly.

Among the crowd, she stood out like snow, beautiful as a painting, making others fade into the background.

"Miss, could you help hold my daughter? If she grows up to be half as beautiful as you, I'd be grateful."

Shuang'Er was a bit at a loss. Despite her strength, she really didn't know how to handle such situations.

Ye Fan smiled at her, "Go ahead, helping others is the root of happiness."

With hesitation, Shuang'Er walked over and received the baby from the nurse's hands.

The baby couldn't see yet, but perhaps it was the pleasant scent of Shuang'Er; the child surprisingly smiled once in her arms.

Shuang'Er's tense limbs suddenly relaxed, and holding the baby, she found this feeling to be wonderful.

She carried the baby from the delivery room to the ward and handed her over to her family, completing her task.

The child's father gave Shuang'Er a red envelope, and upon opening it, she found twenty Light Yuan inside, making her extremely happy.

"Chen Bufan! Look! I earned money! This is the first time I've made money!"

Ye Fan chuckled, "Then keep it safe, this money holds special meaning for you."

"Yes, I will!"

Shuang'Er tucked the twenty yuan into her small satchel and walked out of the hospital with Ye Fan.

On the road, her little leather shoes clicked and clacked, and she seemed to be in a very good mood.

After a while, Shuang'Er suddenly said to Ye Fan, "Chen Bufan, I like it here. It seems... Ye Fan might not be such a bad person."
