Wasteland Commander

Chapter 17: The Celestial River Blitz

The aircraft in flight has inertia, and so do the bombs falling.

This string of bombs fell in a straight line, with only one hitting the carrier.

But even one was formidable enough; once it landed on the deck, it triggered a violent explosion!

Boom~~~!

A massive fireball instantly engulfed the aircraft on half of the carrier, and the violent shockwave either blew these aircraft up with the explosion or swept them off the ship!

Even the island of the carrier wasn't spared, enveloped by the force of the explosion and igniting into a raging inferno!

Only now did the alarm for the attack begin to sound.

The officers and soldiers, even in their sleep, were not awakened by the alarm but by the violent explosions.

The stupor from a hangover meant that they didn't react immediately, dragging their heavy heads and still in a daze.

But the Dawn Army wouldn't give them time to react, and following Lynk's bombing, wave after wave of bombings commenced.

Ten White Bear Bombers formed a diving pattern, with fighters clearing the way in front, and a large number of decoy flares rained down from the sky to draw the enemy's anti-air fire.

The anti-air missiles of the Jiangzhou First Fleet were all drawn by the flares, firing and thus giving the bombers behind ample room to maneuver.

Each aircraft had its own target, except for one bomber attacking another carrier, all the bombers were used to target warships equipped with anti-air missiles.

Ships like cruisers and frigates, which could launch anti-air missiles, were not to be overlooked.

A dense string of bombs fell from the sky, and five enemy warships were hit by bombs at the very first moment.

Among them, a frigate and a cruiser were particularly unlucky, directly hit regarding the ammunition depot, immediately causing a second catastrophic explosion.

Successive explosions turned these two warships into furnaces at once.

With the thunderous explosions, these two warships were no longer worth rescuing!

The sailors on board hadn't even reached their combat positions, either killed by explosions or forced to jump into the water.

By the time the ten bombers of the Dawn Army roared by, the crew of the Jiangzhou First Fleet were only just scrambling to get to their combat posts.

But by then, both carriers were aflame, two warships were already sinking, and two warships were critically damaged.

"Hurry up! I told you not to drink, and now look what's happened!"

"Quick, quick, quick! Prepare for combat!"

"Damn it! Where are the enemies coming from?"

"Are those planes from Wanguo Island? How dare they?"

"Where's the captain? Where's the commander? Where's the young marshal? Where the hell is everyone?"

The soldiers, staggering and stumbling, rushed out, barely dressed, and made their way to their combat positions, their minds still a blur.

At this moment, the lack of officer command immediately became apparent. At every combat position, only the gunners were in charge; without unified command, the soldiers manned the anti-aircraft guns or machine guns and began firing blindly into the sky.

The crew hastily tried to steer the warships away from the port, while the signalmen opened the lights in a rush.

Some were conducting emergency repairs, others were reporting, some were praying, and still others were unfastening lifeboats with the intent to flee.

Both carriers were already damaged, and panicked pilots rushed to the deck, with half of the fighters already damaged, and the remaining ones attempted to brave the firestorm on the front deck and take to the air.

This was an extremely risky maneuver, but they had no choice; half of the deck wasn't enough for takeoffs and landings, and they had to take the risk of charging through the burning area in front.

Most of the planes couldn't make it through the firestorm because the deck was already blown open with large holes, causing them to instantly lose balance during taxiing and, due to inertia, stumble forward and plunge into the sea.

Only a few fighters, which passed through side runways, might have a lucky chance to take off and escape the burning carrier.

The Attack-8 Fighters of the Dawn Army were now circling in the sky.

They launched all their surface-to-air missiles to target the ships that still had anti-air capabilities.

Jiangzhou's existing missiles weren't any missile defense system, and they had no intercept capabilities against missiles descending from above.

Although the precise hits from the missiles weren't enough to sink these warships, they could still effectively destroy their anti-air missile launch systems.

And some fighters that took off from the carriers immediately encountered attacks from the Dawn Army aircraft.

The carriers' aircraft weren't much more advanced than Guo Zhun's planes, and against air-to-air missiles, they were practically sitting ducks.

The aircraft of Jiangzhou, in a hasty counterattack, could only rely on their cannons to retaliate.

The White Bear Bombers that flew past were now turning around, preparing for a second wave of bombing.

.......

"What! The fleet is under attack!"

Chu Yuan, who was dreaming on the painting boat, jolted upright from the bed.

A naked woman beside him tried to cling to him again, but he pushed her aside.

Throwing on clothes in a hurry, sweat already trickled down Chu Yuan's forehead.

Impossible!

Who would attack his fleet at a time like this?

Was it Wanguo Island? Or someone from a nearby base?

He had no clue at this moment, and even the attacked fleet hadn't figured out where the enemy came from.

He hadn't even finished dressing, only pulling on his pants and shoes, then ran out of the cabin bare-chested with the rest of his clothes in hand.

All around him, the cabins were in chaos with officers scrambling out in panic; some even accidentally fell into the river while trying to disembark.

Everyone was too tired and worn out, the effects of alcohol still lingering, making their steps unsteady. Imagining trying to command a battle in such a state was surreal.

However, Chu Yuan dared not delay even for a moment, he could already picture the angry face of Zheng Jinnan. If the First Fleet couldn't be preserved, he couldn't imagine what awaited him.

They all got into vehicles, quickly heading towards the Celestial River.

Though it was only over thirty kilometers away, the journey felt infinitely long.

As the vehicle sped down the road, Chu Yuan could already see the towering flames in the distance, hearing occasional explosions.

"Faster! Faster! If you're slow, I'll take your head!"

"What's going on there? Where did the enemy come from? Are you pigs? You don't even know who attacked you, pigs are a hundred times smarter than you!"

"Why didn't the patrolling anti-submarine ship sound an alarm? Were they so preoccupied with women that their legs turned weak?"

"Disperse the fleet! Don't bunch up like targets, get all the anti-aircraft firepower ready, don't be stingy with the ammo, attack fiercely! I'm arriving soon!"

Jeeps raced madly through the streets as all the officers deeply regretted their actions the night before, but then again, who could have anticipated an attack now?

All they could do now was to try to minimize the losses and deliver some damage to the enemy.

At the very least, they needed to shoot down several enemy planes so that they could have something to report back in Jiangzhou.

......

The Dawn Army's bombers returned after their sortie.

The first wave of bombing had mostly achieved its strategic objectives, with both enemy carriers aflame and most anti-air missile-equipped warships hit.

The enemy's air defense capabilities were more than halved, leaving mainly anti-aircraft cannons and machine guns aside from scattered missiles.

This time, the bombers ascended to a height of one thousand five hundred meters for their bombing run.

At this altitude, the enemy's anti-aircraft artillery was practically useless, especially given the speed of the Dawn Army's bombers.

The second wave targeted all damaged enemy warships.

These ships, already crippled and slow, were ripe for attack.

Lynk was still focusing on the carrier he first assaulted, which was shrouded in heavy smoke. It looked pitiful, but without continued strikes, it wouldn't sink.

"Come on, baby! Let me send you down the Great River!"

Upon reaching the designated location, Lynk decisively dropped his second load of bombs.

Dozens of bombs descended from the sky.

The second drop was higher than the first but equally accurate.

Because Lynk's bomber had upgraded to Two-Star during the battle!

As a series of bombs descended, four hit the target!

Explosions erupted continuously on the carrier's deck, with some aircraft detonating directly in the hangar!

Boom boom boom boom~~~!

The fierce explosions almost cleared the deck of soldiers.

This carrier didn't have the fortifications of those in the pre-apocalyptic world, and in an instant, the hull took in water, and the keel shattered!

The massive carrier broke in half right in the middle!

Neither the aircraft nor the personnel onboard stood any chance of resisting.

The hull broke, and the ship began to sink.

Sailors on the carrier fell into the water like dumplings.

Some smarter ones had already lowered lifeboats or donned life rings and jackets, hoping to swim to safety.

The surface of the water was filled with soldiers desperately swimming away.

In the sky above, as planes continued to fall.

Of the fighters that managed to take off from the two carriers, only a dozen were in the air, being relentlessly pursued by Dawn Army fighters.

One by one, the enemy planes spewed black smoke, spiraling down and crashing into the river with explosions.

As Lynk succeeded, other Dawn Army bombers also continued to hit their targets.

The second carrier took another bomb hit, and two cruisers sank one after another!

Now, the only operational vessels left were two battleships and one wounded cruiser!

The rest of the ships were ablaze, slowly sinking into the river!

Some ships, near the riverbank, were half-submerged, with the other half still above water, billowing black smoke and flames.

Moreover, this cruiser was now fleeing in panic, its anti-air missiles not destroyed but depleted!

The command officers of this warship had gone off gallivanting, and without command, the sailors, unwilling to die for nothing, deserted!

With their retreat, the Celestial River was left with only two battleships, four large transport ships, and a few small anti-submarine vessels.

These ships were reduced to mere targets for the Dawn Army bombers!
