Rotting Land: Survive

Chapter 249: The Sound at the End of the Corridor (Part 3)

"What the hell is going on!?" With eyes wide open, Wang Qiang stood dumbfounded.

Tang Xiaoquan quickly raised his hand to signal him to be quiet, and at the same time, he exchanged a glance with Lin Junfu nearby.

Old Lin immediately understood, took out a lighter from his pocket, and swiftly struck the flint. Instantly, a flickering flame arose.

By the faint light of the flame, Lin Junfu cautiously advanced a few steps forward. Once he reached a position about one meter beyond the security door, he started to hand the lighter over.

The pale flame swayed back and forth, seemingly like a ghostly fire hovering in a graveyard, flaring brightly and dimly, turning everything around into a shadowy and eerie gloom.

Following Lin Junfu's hand, everyone clearly saw a thin gap open between the iron door and the wall. Though it was hardly noticeable, it did not escape the sharp eyes of the survivors.

This truly left Tang Xiaoquan and the others puzzled!

Without a doubt, the security door before them was indeed opened, and it was opened from the inside.

If that were the case... could it be that zombies now possess the ability to open doors?

Thinking of this, Tang Xiaoquan couldn't help but take a cold breath.

Are they joking? It's been less than two months since the catastrophe erupted, during which they've not only encountered zombie dogs but also "Runners".

If these beasts have now learned the ability to "open doors", then the future fate of humanity...

The thought of someday being quietly entered by zombies while asleep, and being devoured unprepared, made Tang Xiaoquan feel a chill descended upon him, as though dropped into an ice cellar.

While Tang Xiaoquan was imagining things, Wang Qiang boldly approached the door, and without a word, forcefully slammed his stick against the door panel.

For an instant, the silent corridor echoed with loud banging sounds.

Tang Xiaoquan was evidently startled by this sudden noise and stumbled back hastily, nearly tripping over.

Fortunately, having lingered and struggled on the edge of death, his emergency reactions had improved significantly, allowing him to narrowly escape a "tragedy".

Steadying himself, Tang Xiaoquan did not scold Wang Qiang but immediately assumed a defensive posture.

Because he knew very well that such a series of noises were enough to excite the zombies.

Sweat rolled down uncontrollably, and all the survivors faced the threat like it was an impending disaster.

One second, two seconds, three seconds, time flowed slowly as the heavy air accompanied the rough breathing of the crowd.

After approximately over a minute of stalemate, Lin Junfu gave everyone a meaningful look.

Undoubtedly, continuing to wait like fools was pointless; if the creature inside wanted to come out, it would have attacked by now.

But after such a long silence, two possibilities remained: either he didn't want to come out or was also waiting for an opportunity.

For the survivors, the first possibility would be preferable; if it were the second, though...

Tang Xiaoquan's face turned a bit unsightly, the unclear situation inside the door made him uneasy.

He hoped his fears would not come true; otherwise, if zombies possessed supposed intelligence, then...

Clenching his retractable wand, after exchanging looks with his companions, Lin Junfu carefully extended his stick into the door gap, then gently flicked it.

"Creak!" The door opened, and the rusty hinges emitted an eerie "screech" as they were twisted open.

This prolonged screeching undeniably added an extra layer of "color" to the already bizarre and terrifying corridor.

"Huff, huff, huff~" As the screeching gradually subsided, the survivors quietly standing outside vaguely heard breathing sounds in the air.

The breathing wasn't loud, but in the silent corridor, it was particularly distinct.

The atmosphere tensed up again; the survivors now were fully certain that there was indeed a life form inside the door.

Only, what exactly was this creature, was like a black shadow clouding all the survivors' minds.

If possible, Tang Xiaoquan truly did not want to know the true face of this unknown creature, but the reality forced him to confront it.

After all, the door was fully opened, and there was no retreat but to face what lay ahead.

"Damn, please don't let it be a zombie dog!" Given everything that had happened, considering the current situation, the thought of "zombie dogs" involuntarily surfaced in Wang Qiang's mind as the words he least wanted to mention.

No one responded to Wang Qiang's "wish", Lin Junfu exchanged another look with the crowd, reminding his companions to prepare, as he was about to enter inside.

Shuffling forward, Lin Junfu cautiously approached the door, then sideways, lifted the lighter in his hand to let the flame illuminate. The dim light gradually revealed the scene inside the room.

Soon enough, a pair of ghostly white eyes entered Lin Junfu's sight, instinctively compelling him to retreat.

Just as he drew back, a figure brushed past his cheek in a flash.

"Dazhuang!"

Everything happened in a blink, and Lin Junfu failed to grasp what had happened.

No sooner had he realized than Tang Xiaoquan raced past him.

Two figures, vanished in an instant.

And once inside, Wei Dazhuang, without any pause, like a demon god descending, raised the massive red axe high, then bared his teeth and swung it down fiercely towards the black shadow where the white eyes were.

Undoubtedly, the full force and rage of his strike—an elephant would likely be felled as well.

Just as the axe was about to land on the unknown creature's head, Dazhuang's stable silhouette was suddenly hit by a powerful force from the side and was knocked flying.

"Bam!" The enormous axe, now out of control, crashed on the ground with unstoppable momentum, shaking the floor.

Lin Junfu even felt something like gravel hit his cheek, which suffices to show the terrifying momentum of Dazhuang's axe.

"What's going on!" Wei Dazhuang turned around, appearing as if ready to consume someone, and when he saw the face of the person who hindered his strike, his wide eyes showed a trace of bewilderment.

"It's you! Xiao Tang!!"

Honestly, not only was Dazhuang confused, but even Old Lin and Wang Qiang outside were at a complete loss.

Had Tang Xiaoquan been kicked in the head by a donkey? Why did he ignore the unknown creature and rush to collide with one of his own?

While everyone was puzzled, a chillingly empty and hoarse voice echoed with a grim resonance...
