Rotting Land: Survive

Chapter 299: Base Recruitment (Part 3)

The review process went quite smoothly; however, in reality, Xu Renjie did not truly assess the survivor. He merely inquired about past experiences the survivor had endured, and it was these accounts that solidified his trust in the person before him.

After all, in the current post-apocalyptic world, being able to rely on one's strength to survive in such a perilous, zombie-infested "ruined city" for more than two months speaks volumes in itself.

In the end, the survivor undoubtedly successfully obtained the qualification for this mission. The next step was to decide on the specific action date. Although the base did not have any strict requirements regarding this date, considering the current urgent situation, the survivor finally decided to strike while the iron was hot and set the final execution date for tomorrow!

With the date set, the survivor's preparations immediately proceeded according to plan. Led by Luo Yi, they first arrived at the weapons room deep in the players' tunnel.

The so-called weapons room wasn't what it seemed. At least, unlike Wang Qiang's imagination of being filled with modern military gear, most of what was there were everyday tools.

Ranging from iron hoes and crowbars to bricks and awls, basically, anything one could think of was there, it could easily rival a "scrap recycling station."

Dazhuang apparently had already planned his equipment. As soon as he stepped into the room, he scanned it quickly, and upon spotting a dark green backpack, he immediately walked over.

This backpack was not just any other item; it was an important resource he specially collected when retreating from "Zhongkun Textile" two weeks ago, containing no less than six agricultural scythes.

Dazhuang carefully took one out of the bag, wielding it a couple of times, and immediately that familiar feeling came over him, as if the memories of everything he had gone through flashed through his mind like a movie.

Wang Qiang, like Dazhuang, also chose his previously favored weapon: a long spear.

However, the spear he chose this time was not his crudely made DIY version, but a true big killer, known in professional circles as the "Red Tassel Spear."

No one knew which "great hero" brought this weapon to the gym, but he must find an opportunity to learn a thing or two someday.

While Wang Qiang was lost in his thoughts and considerations, Old Zhao, after some selection, also decided on his "tool."

The "tool" was a **, and although the blade had some nicks, it was still sharp overall.

Especially the dried bloodstains on the blade and handle, which, despite all this time, still testified to its "glorious past."

Wu Chao's attention landed on a red crowbar. His interest in this item mainly stemmed from its similarity to the bats he had used in the past.

Though shorter in length, the crowbar had considerably more attack power compared to a bat.

Wen Quanxin differed from the aforementioned three; he did not overthink it and instead adhered to the principle of short and efficient, choosing two vegetable knives as his weapons for killing.

Because he believed that the main focus of this operation would be indoor combat, lightweight, agile short blades would be more effective than cumbersome long-handled weapons.

Tang Xiaoquan seemed to share his view, as he also chose a weapon suitable for close combat.

Once everyone had made their selections, they each picked some additional gear and, once everything was in order, packed all the chosen items into a large bag and handed it to Luo Yi for centralized management.

After all, the base strictly prohibited carrying controlled weapons to prevent the occurrence of armed conflicts.

Perhaps such a measure might seem like an overreaction to you, but in fact, any bloodshed incident in the post-apocalyptic world could ignite a catastrophe.

Because once the scent of blood was detected by the zombies outside the walls, even a single incident could spiral into a disaster capable of devouring the entire gymnasium.

With the weapons settled, it naturally came time for the choice of transportation.

The base had a total of five vehicles. Besides the city patrol vehicle brought by the survivors themselves, there was an off-road vehicle, two military trucks, and a minivan.

Undoubtedly, the military truck, in terms of both performance and practicality, was the best choice for this mission. However, considering that none of their group had experience driving such a large vehicle, the survivors regrettably excluded it from their selection.

Similarly, the off-road and minivan were abandoned due to their good protection but insufficient carrying capacity.

Finally, after careful deliberation, the survivors unanimously chose the city patrol vehicle as their transportation and cargo carrier for the operation the next day.

After all, this city patrol vehicle was regarded as the "savior" of the survivors, and even from a superstitious perspective, picking it presented no issues.

Of course, "luck" was just one factor in surviving the post-apocalyptic world, not the determinant.

If you relied solely on luck to avoid danger and complete tasks, you wouldn't be far from death.

Thus, remaining practical and pragmatic, the survivors requested Luo Yi to have the base's professional vehicle maintenance personnel conduct necessary upkeep and repairs on the city patrol vehicle.

To this, Luo Yi readily agreed with a promise to provide the survivors with a "brand-new" city patrol vehicle by the time of their operation tomorrow.

With that, weapons, vehicles, and personnel were all adequately prepared. The only uncertain factor left for the survivors was the route for their operation.

This brings us to mention Yan Hua. A few days ago, when he overheard the survivors establishing their team, he had attempted to advocate for his participation.

Of course, his actions were not entirely out of a desire to help the survivors. After all, no one would prefer risking life and limb outside over enjoying the comfort inside the gym.

However, the base's circumstances were evident; his wife and children were struggling daily with hunger, and as a man, Yan Hua felt a false sense of guilt and inadequacy.

Thus, upon hearing about this rare opportunity, he mustered the courage to request participation, aiming for the promise of 30% of the rewards upon successful completion to improve his family's living conditions.

As a parent, Zhao Yunhai understood this all too well.

However, given the mission's inherent danger and Yan Hua's long-term shelter within the high walls lacking emergency skills, Captain Old Zhao politely declined Yan Hua's "kindness."

Yet Yan Hua was unaware that the group he had encountered would not shortchange him any future "benefits," even if he did not partake in the operation.

Without the assistance of locals, and with Zhao Huilong in the recovery phase, the survivors had to draw up an action route based on the map provided by the base.

During this time, Yan Hua still offered quite a few substantial suggestions, and thanks to his selfless assistance, the survivors finally devised a relatively "safe" action plan.

At this point, everything concerning the next day's operation was fully prepared, leaving the survivors only needing to rest well and wait for the dawn of the following day.
