Rotting Land: Survive

Chapter 313: The Grand Plan (Part 6)

As the granary became increasingly clear, all the participants in the battle felt an involuntary tension rise within them. Even Wang Zhongyu, who had been as noisy as a lark chirping along the way, suddenly went silent, like a disconnected speaker.

The convoy moved forward slowly, and their arrival undoubtedly caught the attention of the surrounding zombies. The commotion spread rapidly like a domino effect to all sides.

The sudden change immediately terrified the group of survivors immensely.

Despite having lived under high walls for months and undergone a week of response training, the survivors still trembled uncontrollably with a cold chill down their spines when faced with the real threat of death.

Tang Xiaoquan also noticed the change in Wang Zhongyu beside him; the latter's face showed signs of nervousness, and his previously relaxed hands now gripped the steering wheel tightly.

Tang Xiaoquan did not show any disdain or ridicule towards this change. On the contrary, he fully understood Wang Zhongyu's reaction because, at the beginning of the apocalypse, he was the same way. However, after experiencing so many life-and-death challenges, he had learned to adjust his mindset to adapt to such terrifying threats.

"Hey, brother! Don't be nervous, take a deep breath! There are so many of us, and we're inside the vehicles, those beasts can't harm us!"

Maybe the encouragement worked, or maybe Wang Zhongyu had a good psychological quality to begin with. In any case, Wang Zhongyu's tense expression slightly eased as Tang Xiaoquan finished speaking.

The convoy continued to move slowly forward, and thanks to the damaged gate of the granary, they could proceed into the depths of the warehouse without stopping.

As the lead vehicle halted, the subsequent vehicles braked one after another. Immediately, everyone aboard disembarked, and following the prior arrangement, quickly divided into two groups.

One group, the transport team, consisted of 10 members primarily responsible for transporting the supplies stored in the granary.

The second group, the defense team, comprised 20 members, tasked mainly with guarding and eliminating the enemy.

All tasks had been meticulously rehearsed over the past week, so although the survivors were somewhat nervous about the approaching zombies, their actual operations proceeded without major errors.

Once the two teams were formed, the transport group immediately embarked on the action of moving the supplies.

Due to the limitation in numbers, the transport group did not adopt a random method; instead, they lined up in a column, passing supplies from inside the warehouse to the truck tail in a relay method, much like a game of passing the baton.

This not only solved the issue of insufficient manpower but also significantly improved the efficiency of the transfer.

More importantly, this orderly queue made guarding and defense more convenient and comprehensive compared to chaotic handling.

Xu Renjie stood on the truck top, with the seven trucks semi-circle around the granary, a decision he made after an on-site inspection.

Given the gate was destroyed, and with only 20 people at hand, it was unrealistic to fend off the endless zombies approaching from all directions.

Thus, he needed to man-made construct a defensive ground to slow down the enemy's attack speed, and the seven trucks were undoubtedly the best choice.

In the frame, excited zombies unsurprisingly closed in on the granary. Although their numbers were still scant, Xu Renjie knew that in a few more minutes, this place would become an ocean of zombies.

Time is life; after completing his observation, Xu Renjie lowered his binoculars and glanced at the defense team members who were already in place.

He did not wish to pressure these people, but the dire situation left him no room for consideration.

"Everyone, attention. The zombies are coming. I know many of you are facing such a scene for the first time. I don't want to scare you, but the upcoming battle may be extremely brutal, and the number of zombies will definitely exceed your imagination—massive! I reiterate: these creatures are no longer the humans you once knew, so strike without hesitation, make sure to hit them fatally! Remember, their weakness is the head! Also, no matter what happens, do not leave your post at random; trust your companions completely! Remember, only with unity and fearlessness can we attain ultimate victory in this battle!"

As soon as Xu Renjie finished speaking, his tone suddenly shifted. This time, his instructions were no longer directed at ordinary civilians but at the seven brothers in arms who came through life and death with him: "Sharp Blade Company, everyone, switch to single shots, set your targets! Free fire! Machine gunners wait for my command, do not open fire without orders!"

With Xu Renjie's series of orders issued, well-trained soldiers immediately prepared according to his words.

When the first wave of lead zombies entered the effective range of the Type 95 automatic rifles, several tongues of flame spewed out instantly.

"Bang, bang, bang"

The Sharp Blade Company lived up to being the backbone of the troops. Despite the tense and terrifying circumstances, the rigorously-trained soldiers maintained an excellent and steady shooting state.

Almost every bullet they fired accurately penetrated the zombies' skulls, and in less than 20 seconds, the front row of zombies all fell to the ground.

But no matter how accurate the soldiers' marksmanship, it ultimately could not surpass the overwhelming combat power of the zombies.

Seeing the Runners about to breach the fire blockade line formed by the Type 95s, Xu Renjie decisively issued a new order: "Everyone, prepare for melee combat!"

As he issued the order, Xu Renjie already pulled out the ** tucked at his waist ahead of everyone, its diamond-shaped blood groove glinting coldly in the sunlight.

Since the company commander had spoken, the soldiers naturally had no more to say, immediately ceasing fire and attaching the specialized bayonets for the Type 95 to their gun barrels.

Soon, the Runners that broke through the siege rushed up. Some of them wore granary uniforms, likely the local staff.

And more were survivors who, like Xu Renjie, came here harboring the same intention to snatch food, but unfortunately, they did not achieve their anticipated plan and ended up as part of the zombie army.

"Clac-clac!"

Just as Xu Renjie mentioned earlier, when dealing with these zombies, who had lost all humanity, there was no need for any pity; otherwise, the one who falls in the end would certainly be yourself.

And as the fight intensified, his words were deeply imprinted in the guards' minds.

If initially, they still harbored a bit of compassion for these beasts, now, under the latter's menacing claws and bloodthirsty fangs, all their "illusions and luck" shattered, leaving only the instinct for survival and mechanical hacking.
