[UEFA Champions League Round of 16- Second Leg:]
(Juventus vs Barcelona)
(Venue: Allianz Stadium, Turin, Italy)
[HALF-TIME: Juventus 2-1 Barcelona (Aggregate: 3-4)
The second half of the game was about to start, and the atmosphere in the stadium turned even more electric.
The roar of the Allianz Stadium was deafening. White flags, flares, and black smoke once again filled the stands as the home fans sang like men at war.
Their team was losing; they needed another goal ASAP.
Under this cauldron, Barcelona's players jogged back onto the pitch for the second half. 45 minutes separated them from either glory or heartbreak.
The aggregate scoreboard said they were winning, but Hansi Flick's men knew not to be complacent. Under the raucous atmosphere of this stadium, it felt like they were already losing.
FWEEE!
The whistle shrieked. The game restarted and the atmosphere turned even more suffocating.
Every touch from a Barcelona player drew a wave of jeers from the home fans, while every clearance from Juventus was met with a thunderous ovation.
And right in the middle of it all stood Sam Moses.
The first ten minutes of the second half was war as Juventus tore out of the gates like possessed wolves.
Barely a few minutes in and already rampaging forward, Koopmeiners pinged a diagonal ball to Cambiaso, who surged forward, crossing into the box.
Jonathan David rose above Araujo, and planted a firm header!
But Joan Garcia parried.
The rebound fell to Locatelli. The Juventus star fired on sight, but the shot was blocked by Cubarsí.
The ball pinged around the box before Balde slammed it clear.
The second half just started, but Barcelona already looked like they were barely hanging on in the face of the Allianz pressure.
"Vamos, vamos!" Hansi Flick shouted from the touchline at his players, urging composure, but it felt like the walls were closing in around his team.
The duo of Kenan Yildiz and Jonathan David tormented the Barca center-backs, twisting and turning, every fake causing the defenders to panic.
Despite Hansi Flick's half-time speech, Barcelona seemed out of it and Juventus smelled blood.
Even the commentators could feel it.
"Barcelona are under siege here in Turin! What intensity from Juve! The noise, the pressure, its relentless!"
"The Old Lady fans have created a storm!"
As his team suffered, Sam also sensed the danger as he dropped deeper, shouting instructions and trying to calm his team down.
"Keep it simple! Hold your line!" He communicated with his midfielders.
But Juventus didn't stop to breathe.
They held for 10 minutes, but that was all as Juventus finally threw the gut punch in the 57th minute of the game.
It was a corner for Juventus as Koopmeiners trotted over and raised his hand , giving the signal to his teammates. Then, he whipped it in.
BAM!
There was chaos in the Barcelona box as multiple players rose, but McKennie met it first, his header smacking off García's gloves.
Rebound! Then…
"YILDIZZZZZZZZ!" The commentator screamed as the enigmatic Turkish winger hammered the ball in from close range.
GOAL!
"3–1 JUVENTUS! 4–4 ON AGGREGATE!" The commentator screamed in a shrill voice like he was losing his mind. "What a game!"
"What a night!"
The stadium exploded.
White smoke rose into the sky as the fans screamed.
Barcelona's players looked stunned. Sam just stood still, his jaw tight as he stared at the scoreboard, an increasing sense of crisis rising within him.
"And just like that… Juventus have leveled the tie! The Italians are on fire!" The commentator added amid the fire burning through the stadium.
Bremer, the Old Lady defender pumped his fists at the Curva Sud stand of the stadium while their coach clapped from the sidelines, grinning like a general who knew victory was near.
Hansi Flick, however, stood unmoved. His eyes were calm, almost cold.
He turned to the bench. "Frenkie, warm up."
Marc Casado started ahead of the Dutchman tonight due to suffering a discomfort in training, but finally, Hansi Flick was ready to gamble with him.
In just a few minutes, Frankie De Jong entered the pitch, replacing Gavi as Pedri dropped deeper beside De Jong, the structure of the team shifting.
Now it was a 4-3-3 formation instead of a 4-2-3-1, a radical change from the German coach. The tweaked formation now had Sam floating freely across the front line, giving him more freedom in an unshackled false nine role.
After doing his analysis, Hansi Flick realized that the only way to turn this game around was to give his star player more freedom.
Juventus's tenacity caught even him off-guard.
"Let's make them chase," Hansi Flick told his staff. "They've burned too much energy".
The game continued, and slowly, Barcelona began to pass.
Slowly, their rhythm developed.
Gradually, passes stringed into combos as multiple players started nearing the flow state pushed by pressure.
The exhaustion of the Juventus players played a big role in this, but even more importantly was because a few of Barcelona's stars finally started pulling their weight as their brilliance gradually influenced the momentum of the game.
The UEFA Champions League stage is the biggest stage in Club football, just below the FIFA World Cup.
FIFA may claim that the FIFA Club World Cup was bigger than the UEFA Champions League, but to majority of football fans, the Champions League was still the recognized OG club competition.
This was the stage where Ballon d'Or winners are forged, the stage where legends and unforgettable tales are written.
And tonight, a few FC Barcelona players evolved, relishing their humanity in favor of embracing the Super Saiyan.
In midfield, Pedri transcended, becoming a God of his own.
His touches, his flicks, his movement, his feints, they became sharper, deadlier, more penetrative as he started dictating the tempo.
And with his evolution, it affected his midfield counterparts as Frankie De Jong and Marc Casado fell in line behind him, dancing to his tempo.
In big games, the best of the best players blossom; they steal the show in the biggest stages, separating themselves from the good players, showing exactly why they were rated as elites above others.
This was exactly what slowly transpired at the Allianz Stadium.
