Guarding the River of Time

Chapter 174: Changes After the Flood the Rotting Whale

After an hour of meticulous crafting, a rustic large wooden bow was made just like that.

Having guarded the river for so long, Su Mu also discovered that not only are there Treasure Fish in the river, but there are also some rare and powerful Spirit Beasts on the shore.

This bow would be perfect for hunting or such.

The inspiration for this bow came from that Cross River Man from last time, probably called "Butcher." He carried an extravagant Bronze Great Bow on his back, looking extremely formidable.

So, Su Mu rewarded himself with a Great Bow as well.

It's just missing a bowstring. The potential of a bow lies in the string. But for now... he couldn't find a suitable material for the string, so he set it aside.

He'd see if he could find suitable material in the future.

....

Su Mu also crafted a wooden sword. He tested its combat ability and found that this wooden sword even surpassed all his Treasure Swords!

Oh man, the value of this tree is much higher than he imagined!

Anyway, there's plenty of wood, so he could make many things.

In total, he made two wooden bows, three wooden swords, two sets of tables and chairs, two wooden doors, and even crafted himself a tea set, including teacups and a teapot.

The wooden cover for the water cellar was also replaced with a new one.

After all this, he only used one-tenth of the wood, leaving plenty more.

Su Mu plans to build a small boat for Nannan. Since he's often by the river, having a wooden boat seems quite reasonable, right?

....

However, building a boat is a big task, and since it was his first time, it took Su Mu two full days to finish just half of it.

Because Su Mu couldn't spend all his time on this; his main task was still to earn Favor Points every day.

The recent flood not only brought Su Mu many treasures but also earned him plenty of Favor Points.

Because the flood washed away quite a few stone dams and brought a lot of debris and whatnot, a bunch of fish and shrimp were washed ashore on the riverbank. A single patrol trip would earn Su Mu at least four to five thousand Favor Points at the very least.

He felt the sensation of "picking up money" for the first time. In one word, it was exhilarating!

Early this morning, Su Mu came to a low-lying beach next to the river. It had been heavily impacted by the flood, with several dams being washed away, causing the main river to rush toward the tributary.

If not repaired, it would cause the water level of the tributary to rise, submerging countless plants along its path.

Repairing such extensively damaged dams yielded extremely generous Favor Points. Even a small stone dam promised at least two thousand Favor Points.

The beach was covered with all kinds of fish washed up by the flood, including flounder, big carp, large black fish, big grass fish, and some shells and shrimp.

Many were dead, but a small portion was still alive, and Su Mu released them back into the river.

As for those dead fish, they emitted a strong rotting smell, and Su Mu wasn't going to take them back home to eat. Times have changed, and with no shortage of Treasure Fish Meat, there was no need to eat these dead, unfresh fish.

However, he couldn't just let these dead fish rot away on the riverbank; it looked too unsightly. He would clean them up and toss them back into the river.

Even though he wouldn't eat them, there were other carnivorous big fish in the river for whom these dead fish would be a delightful meal.

...

Su Mu sat on the riverbank, looking at the cleaned-up area. He wiped the sweat off his forehead. Despite being tired, he felt satisfied!

In just these two hours, twenty thousand Favor Points were credited. Earning ten thousand per hour, with such a return rate, Su Mu could work tirelessly for a whole year!

.....

After cleaning up, Su Mu moved on to another section of the water.

All of a sudden, as he walked further, Su Mu caught an overwhelming stench.

The scent was indescribable, like the decay of a decades-old corpse mixed with the rust of rotted wood and iron, wafting from the water ahead.

Just one whiff brought discomfort, his body instinctively feeling some aversion.

Moreover, the closer he got, the stronger the smell became.

Unable to bear it, Su Mu switched off his sense of smell, and only then did he press forward.

...

Soon, after passing through a small cluster of shrubs, he arrived at a new section of water.

This body of water was a tributary, so it was Su Mu's first time here.

Seeing the scene before him, Su Mu widened his eyes in astonishment.

A large whale was stranded on the shore, its body already decaying. The stench he had smelled came from this whale.

Upon approaching, he realized it was a Tiger-headed Whale. Compared to the usual size of a whale, this one wasn't very big, only a fifth of the normal size.

Half of this whale's body was gone, either rotted away or missing, as if it had been gnawed off.

Also, how could a tributary's narrow channel accommodate such a large whale?

It must have been washed here by the flood.

.....

Just then, there was a rustling sound from the whale's belly.

The next second, several vultures flew out from inside, each clutching bits of meat in their beaks. Seeing Su Mu, they reacted as if they'd seen a ghost. All five vultures flew off in different directions, carrying their spoils, as though afraid Su Mu would compete for their food.

It's not like they were carrying off some treasure. Su Mu wasn't interested in chasing them.

It seemed that this whale had been feasted upon by the Spirit Beasts on the shore.

Suddenly, several snakes slithered out from the whale's body, escaping in panic. Shortly after, over a dozen large crabs scuttled out from the belly, each carrying chunks of meat as they dashed towards the river.

Even though the whale's body had decayed so much, it still attracted so many animals vying for a share.

Su Mu took out a small knife, cut off a piece of meat, and—only after switching on his sense of smell—held it to his nose for a whiff.

The next moment, a powerful stench assaulted his nostrils, piercing deep into his soul, nearly making Su Mu vomit.

This smell was no longer just a simple "odor." One sniff made his entire body instinctively recoil.

Su Mu quickly turned off his sense of smell and tossed the rotten chunk back.

Disgusting.....

He had to quickly dispose of this rotten carcass—he could earn quite a few Favor Points this way too.

As Su Mu unleashed his Spiritual Power, preparing to hurl the whale's body into the river for the big fish to quickly devour, he was startled to realize that no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't lift the whale.

It seemed something in the whale's belly was pinning its body firmly to the shore.

Braving his disgust, Su Mu sliced open the whale's belly.

Even after being dead for so long, the skin on the belly remained tough.

After cutting a three-meter opening, he peeked inside.

Suddenly, upon seeing something, Su Mu's pupils contracted sharply, and his body froze with shock.
