Gourmet: Midnight Vending

Chapter 34: The Perfectly Customized Fried Rice

Even if the King of Heaven himself came, fried eggs must be cooked directly with high-temperature oil. So when Chen Mo cracked eggs into just-melted, still-cool lard, the onlookers were completely baffled.

Fortunately, Chen Mo's movements were very smooth, and the next step was something that anyone who often cooks could understand.

Guo Aiping watched as Chen Mo poured two servings of overnight rice into the pan and suddenly realized, "Oh, so that's it. The young boss intends to make a fried rice similar to golden egg fried rice."

Old Zhao turned his head, "You know that? I've never seen you cook it."

There was no joy or sorrow on Guo Aiping's face, only a hint of indifference in her voice as she retorted, "Haven't seen you come home to eat the meals I cook, have I?"

Good heavens!

Old Zhao turned his head, trembling, attempting to mask his unease with silence.

Just as Guo Aiping said, after Chen Mo poured the overnight rice into the pan, he slowly pressed down on it with a spatula. After a few times, the rice scattered apart, and you could barely see any clumps.

And after Chen Mo lightly stir-fried it twice, Fang Zhizhong noticed that the rice grains were magically coated with the previous egg mixture, looking golden and shiny.

It hardly even needed more ingredients; just at this moment, the smell of the lard egg fried rice already began to excite his taste buds.

"With just another spoonful of salt, I could eat two big bowls right now!"

Fang Zhizhong thought silently.

But it seemed Chen Mo didn't plan to do as Fang Zhizhong expected, as there were two progress bars floating in front of him at the moment.

One was for [Fried Rice], and the other was for [Stir-frying].

The stir-frying progress bar moved slightly faster. Chen Mo needed to grasp the timing each time to keep turning the distinctly separated rice grains in the pan. The fried rice progress bar moved much slower.

"Looks like you need to fry this rice until it's completely dried to achieve perfection."

Although Chen Mo was entirely trusting the system, feeling that as long as he followed the guidance, there shouldn't be any problem.

Still, frying egg-fried rice to a crisp seemed a bit puzzling to him.

Thus, he kept stirring it over medium heat until Chen Mo scooped up the rice with a spatula and poured it back into the pan, producing a light "crackling" sound.

Just a few minutes ago, Fang Zhizhong had smelled it and thought it was delicious. Now, he began questioning life.

Because the smell coming from the pan was no longer the fusion of lard, egg, and rice fragrance, but rather...

"Boss, are you sure this is okay?" Fang Zhizhong took a sniff and confirmed he was indeed smelling burnt rice.

This is a scent that only appears when the rice grains are dried to the extreme, so Fang Zhizhong was skeptical. Generally, egg-fried rice should be soft to taste its best, right?

This time, Chen Mo said nothing. As the glowing ball of the fried rice reached the highlight, he precisely turned off the flame, immediately earning a big [perfect!]

The frying pan no longer looked like it did before, with glistening, golden oil. Now it was just a pan of dried rice.

Chen Mo stretched his body, feeling a bit stiff after three consecutive hours of constant cooking.

He turned on the high heat again!

Almost instantly, the temperature inside the pan shot up dramatically.

At the same time, Chen Mo scooped a ladle of broth from another electric pot simmering with spicy bone soup and drizzled it along the edges of the pan!

Under the high heat, the frying pan reached an extremely high temperature. The moment the broth was poured in, a big cloud of steam exploded, while Chen Mo's left hand maintained a slight shaking motion of the pan. The previously extremely dry rice grains started to tumble and jump in the steam!

Though seemingly unrelated, the two elements gradually underwent a magical transformation during their brief contact.

The crisp sound of rice grains falling into the pan gradually diminished until it completely disappeared.

Then, Chen Mo poured another ladle of broth into the pan. Under the intense heat, the broth vanished almost the instant it contacted the rice grains, reverting the previously dry rice grains back to a moist state.

After stir-frying for a few more seconds, Chen Mo poured the other ingredients simmering in the electric pot into the iron wok as well.

Once the moisture in the pan reduced, he gradually added the remaining ingredients.

Crushed fruits, fried chicken cut into small pieces by Chen Mo, delicate little roasted meats, and other snacks — when the fried rice was heaped into the largest lunch box.

Chen Mo carefully picked out two pieces of just-prepared teppanyaki tofu and placed them beside the rice.

"Alright, let's call it the All-in-One Free-Style Fried Rice!"

Fang Zhizhong excitedly took the lunch box, "No doubt! The longer the name, the better it must taste."

Without moving from the spot, he held the spoon stuck into the lunch box and took a large scoop.

This scoop was nothing but fierce.

Rice, Fuding Meat Slices, little roasted meat chunks, fruit pieces, diced onions, squid slices, ham cubes, tiny meatball pieces — all these ingredients were cut small, almost all scooped up in one go.

He brought it to his mouth.

The All-in-One Free-Style Fried Rice sounded impressive just from its name, and as the last fried rice made by the young boss tonight, it attracted a lot of attention. Under many people's watchful eyes, Fang Zhizhong ate this bite of rice.

Seafood taste, meat aroma, the flavor of boiled meat, the taste of roasted meat...

So many flavors mixed together, not only didn't taste strange, but rather blended into the creation of a rather complex flavor. Old Fang chewed thoughtfully, trying to discover more from this fried rice.

Once the flavor of the side ingredients fully developed, the main character of this dish came to the fore: the rice grains, fried dry initially and then stir-fried with broth, regained a soft texture, and were easy to chew, with an added unique aroma.

The flavor of burnt rice!

Some people genuinely love it, while those who don't eat it often not because it doesn't taste good, but likely due to their poor dental health.

In fact, some families deliberately cook rice longer just to form a layer of burnt rice at the bottom before digging in.

Fang Zhizhong happened to be one of those people with not-so-great dental health but a strong love for burnt rice.

This full bowl of rice, soft yet laden with the aroma of burnt rice, perfectly hit the ultimate fantasy he had for a bowl of rice! Moreover, besides the burnt rice flavor, the rice grains distinctly conveyed the umami flavor from the rich bone broth.

"Damn, how could there be such delicious food in the world?" Fang Zhizhong thought as he ate, "Why didn't I discover this before?"

To be honest, the reason this kind of thing didn't exist before might be because the idea was just too avant-garde.

Buying all the street snacks and then making a fried rice — Chen Mo probably set a new trend.

The ingredients weren't particularly upscale; you could find them anywhere on the street.

As for the technique, with so many watching, no one could see the brilliance; anyway, it was just fry fry fry then add broth and continue to fry fry fry.

Fang Zhizhong took two more careful bites, his taste buds completely activated. His stomach hadn't even reacted yet, and his appetite already claimed the high ground!

His brain kept sending signals urging him.

Old Fang opened his mouth wide, scooping one spoonful after another vigorously.

This time, it truly felt delightful!
