Gourmet: Midnight Vending

Chapter 44: High-Education Dimensional Suppression

Seeing Ma Qiang shove half a baozi into his mouth, munching it down in just two or three bites, Zhang Zihan felt a bit confused.

He used to see those uncles and aunts who would proactively offer him delicious things even if he didn't ask. Why did this uncle just... eat it himself?

His not fully developed brain was trying hard to comprehend what had just happened.

"Grandpa, grandpa! Give me money, I want to eat baozi!"

Old Zhang had just come out with a bowl when he saw his little grandson running over while shouting, "Baozi is here, isn't this baozi?"

Zhang Zihan, holding his cartoon bowl, ran with a patter to Ma Qiang who had just bought baozi, "Look, I've got baozi too!"

Ma Qiang let out a cold laugh.

In his heart, from the moment Zhang Zihan called him uncle, he was considered an enemy. And Ma Qiang was just a big kid at heart, not much older than a four-year-old. Showing off to him?

Brother Qiang took a bite out of his newly bought baozi, pretending to be utterly enchanted, as if tasting the burst of flavors on his palate so real that he almost believed it himself.

Zhang Zihan was not to be outdone either.

He took a big bite out of his baozi, mimicking Ma Qiang, purposely showing just how delicious it was.

Ma Qiang immediately felt miffed.

Thinking, I have a university degree, am I going to be outsmarted by a preschool kid? Now you'll see what the power of knowledge really means!

"Yours isn't tasty, mine is the delicious one."

Zhang Zihan blinked his big eyes, "Nonsense! Mine's tasty, yours isn't!"

Ma Qiang pointed at his baozi, "Look, mine is all meat, and it's stewed meat. The baozi skin has absorbed all the delicious juices, just look at yours."

He then pointed at the little one's baozi, "What's that? Who eats such big chunks of fat? Even if it was given to me I wouldn't eat it. It doesn't even look good!"

Zhang Zihan, only four years old, though able to speak, had a very limited vocabulary, opened his mouth to retort but was at a loss for words, his eyes blinking at the baozi in Ma Qiang's hand.

At the bitten part, the rich brown meat could be clearly seen, and there was even meat juice inside. When he looked down at his own, it indeed seemed to...

"Ah!~~ Waaa... Grandpa, grandpa, I want that baozi, I want the all-meat baozi! Waaa..."

Old Zhang: ???

"Darling grandson, ours are all meat too."

"I want that baozi! Waaa..."

Old Zhang glared at Ma Qiang, feeling that today's college students were really something odd, what business did a grown man have competing with a child?

But there was no helping it, love across generations was a formidable thing. Old Zhang swayed Zhang Zihan in his arms, "Alright, alright, we'll queue for baozi, grandpa will buy for you, don't cry, okay!"

It worked wonders!

Zhang Zihan immediately stopped crying, proudly looked over Ma Qiang from Old Zhang's shoulder, "I'm buying baozi too, hehe~"

Ma Qiang looked a bit speechless at the little rascal, hadn't he been crying for ages without a single tear?

Tactical crying—dry sobbing!

There weren't many people in line in the courtyard. The price of five yuan made a part of the elderly tour group avoid it, and the tall, burly young man who looked quite intimidating stood before the food truck.

"Each person can only buy one at a time! If you want more, just queue up again!" Dunzi was maintaining order.

It seemed the most reasonable approach.

If they didn't do it this way, he and Zhang Feng would buy up all these hundred or so baozi, taking the leftovers home to slowly enjoy.

There were about ten people ahead of Old Zhang, each buying one baozi, and the line was moving quickly.

"One please... is that you?" In the dimming night, Old Zhang finally recognized the young man in front of him, wasn't it the same guy who had sold him flour earlier?

Chen Mo was equally surprised, "Yes, you'd like one baozi, right?"

For a moment, Chen Mo thought about not selling to Old Zhang, but then he felt there was no need.

Everyone had their own rules. Chen Mo's food truck rule was never to make things difficult for others.

"Yes, I'll take one baozi. This little guy refused to eat the ones at home and insisted on buying one."

Chen Mo placed the baozi into a box and took the five yuan Old Zhang handed over, "Kids just love to join in the fun. Once they've satisfied their curiosity, they're fine."

Old Zhang nodded, carrying Zhang Zihan away from the line.

Just as Chen Mo had said, the first thing Zhang Zihan did upon receiving his baozi wasn't gobbling it down but instead ran over to Ma Qiang, just as Ma Qiang finished his fourth baozi.

"Look! I have baozi too!"

Ma Qiang let out a cold laugh, "I can eat four, I'm going for a fifth."

Zhang Zihan's mouth puckered immediately, about to cry, Old Zhang hurriedly carried his grandson away from Ma Qiang.

"Man, you're something else, bullying a little kid," Zhou Hu, who had been watching for a while, laughed.

Ma Qiang smiled silently, thinking Zhou Hu was his godfather, the little kid just called him uncle, remembering that Zhou Hu became a grandpa at nineteen, Ma Qiang's heart felt joy for his godfather.

Zhang Zihan nestled in Old Zhang's embrace, took a huge bite out of his big baozi, "Yum yum~ grandpa, the baozi is tasty."

Old Zhang snorted, some baozi, can it really be tastier than those from the Zhang Family?

This flour, can it really surpass what we use at the Zhang Family?

Or could it be... damn! Getting a closer whiff, as Zhang Zihan went in for a second bite, the aroma of the stew meat filling burst out, leaving Old Zhang momentarily energized.

How could this be?

Old Zhang looked down to see that the filling was entirely a rich brown color, and it was clear this was a pure meat baozi, without even any green onions for flavoring!

Unlike the ones he made, this filling looked more like finely chopped minced meat? Yet it wasn't packed into a solid ball. Whatever the case, the flavor shot straight up into his nostrils, as Old Zhang whispered hoarsely, "Darling grandson, is the baozi tasty? Would you share a bite with grandpa?"

Zhang Zihan was munching on his baozi and upon hearing this as if facing a great enemy, kicked out from Old Zhang's arms and landed on the ground, "No way!"

"Hey! You rascal!"

Zhang Zihan clutched his baozi and nimbly darted into the crowd, a minute later.

"Grandpa, I want more baozi..."

Old Zhang had no choice but to carry Xiaozhang to the end of the line again, but strangely, the queue seemed much longer than before.

"I'm not kidding, it's super delicious! I'm already on my third, and when I go again, I'll be on my fourth!"

Uncle Dong, ahead of Old Zhang, was wildly promoting the baozi to an elderly lady with two jugs of vinegar in her hands, clearly skeptical.

"Really? No matter how tasty it is, isn't it just a meat baozi? Could it be better than gourmet delicacies?"

Uncle Dong was anxious, reminiscent of times as a kid recommending a great movie to a friend who stubbornly didn't believe him, it was frustrating.

"If I'm lying, call me a grandson! I'll treat you this time, if you find it tasty, just pay me for it, if not, I won't ask for any money!"

Old Zhang listened to their conversation, then looked at his grandson's eyes filled with anticipation.

No way, I need to buy two to try later, I want to taste it myself!
