Wizard: Starting from the Skill Tree

Chapter 104: Nightmare Beetle

Duke was not averse to these stringent, even overly harsh standards. He didn't find them troublesome; instead, he seriously studied and recorded them.

He plans to adhere to these standards himself when making magic potions in the future.

Every laboratory standard is written in blood, and Hela is a living example of this.

The two of them were busy all morning, finally cleaning up the laboratory.

Hela moved to the rest area, asking the Wild Boar Man Parker beside her to pour a pot of hot tea, giving Duke a cup as well.

The Wild Boar Man Parker was dressed in a clean and neat black cotton outfit. He looked simple-minded, didn't talk much, and just waited nearby for instructions.

Just as Duke was about to take a sip of tea, a black beetle crawled out from the cup, still wet with tea, and scampered over to Hela's hand.

"Hey Momo, why are you running around again?" Hela scolded, but her tone was filled with affection.

The two antennae on the beetle's head drooped back, as if it knew it had done something wrong.

"Alright, alright, back you go. Parker, pour Duke another cup of tea." Hela said.

The black beetle crawled up Hela's hand, all the way up to her face, and then burrowed directly into her right eye.

Hela's right eye was a black vortex filled with black mist, the purpose of which was unknown.

It wasn't the first time Duke had seen this black beetle, which sometimes sneaked out of the black vortex when Hela wasn't paying attention.

"Thank you." Duke said in gratitude after accepting the freshly poured tea from Parker, who only offered a simple smile without saying anything.

As he drank the tea, Duke noticed the black beetle named Momo perched in Hela's right eye, its two antennae probing out as it stared at him, seemingly curious about him.

Hela laughed: "That's just how Momo is. Every time a stranger comes by, it gets very curious. It's a very cute child."

Duke nodded. He had heard Reela mention Momo before.

One mustn't underestimate this black beetle; it's a Level 2 Life with extremely special abilities.

Momo is essentially a Nightmare Beetle, originating from the Nightmare Plane, and was taken in as a pet by Hela.

When Hela first encountered Momo many years ago, it was just a weak Nightmare Beetle and only grew stronger after signing a pact with Hela.

Momo can devour curses, capable of swallowing any type of curse directly.

The stronger the curse it devours, the more beneficial it is for it, allowing it to grow faster.

Nightmare Beetles are among the most effective means of removing curses, and they have no side effects.

Over the years, Hela has helped numerous wizards remove curses and has fed Momo well.

"Oh, this little guy seems to like you a lot. I can feel its emotions," Hela said with a smile.

Momo continued to stare at Duke, its two antennae swaying unconsciously.

Suddenly, Duke thought it might be because he had visited the Nightmare Plane not long ago, giving off a scent that attracted Momo.

The more he thought about it, the more plausible it seemed, as Momo hadn't returned to the Nightmare Plane for a long time.

It had met Hela in another plane and hadn't gone back since; the Nightmare Plane was now just a childhood memory for it.

Suddenly, Hela held her forehead, saying: "I think I need to rest for a few days. Duke, you've been working hard these days too. I've prepared a batch of magic potion materials for you. They're leftovers, useless to me."

"You can use them to practice making potions. I might not come out for a few days."

As Hela spoke, the gears in her left eye spun faster, and her magical aura grew increasingly unstable. In the blink of an eye, she disappeared, leaving only a space ring on the table.

It was Duke's first time witnessing Hela on the verge of a spiritual power breakdown. The aura she emitted was indeed frightening, instinctively triggering a great sense of crisis.

In just a brief moment, Duke was already breaking into a sweat, as facing such intense pressure up close was immense.

It's no wonder not many Wizard Apprentices are willing to come here; without strong spiritual power, many would have collapsed from that incident just now.

The Wild Boar Man Parker was already unconscious on the ground, foaming at the mouth, his limbs twitching.

Seeing Parker's state, Duke rolled his eyes, sprinkling some tea on the Wild Boar Man's face. Only then did the Wild Boar Man slowly wake up.

Embarrassed, the Wild Boar Man Parker wiped the foam and saliva from his face with a white handkerchief and then hurriedly left as if to take a bath.

His actions were fluid, suggesting it wasn't the first time he'd fainted under such circumstances.

Watching the Wild Boar Man Parker leave, Duke picked up the space ring from the table. Upon probing it with his spiritual power, he found a heap of various magic potion materials inside.

More importantly, the space within the ring was ample, about the size of a 30-square-meter room, akin to a small warehouse.

Surveying the materials inside, they mostly consisted of substandard magic potion materials, without any primary materials.

These were likely the excess materials from Hela's usual potion refining, of no use to her, not worth selling, better left for Duke to practice with.

When wizards commission an Alchemist to refine potions, they typically prepare extra materials to account for the possibility of failure.

However, for a skilled Alchemist like Hela, the failure rate is lower, resulting in an accumulation of materials over time.

Additionally, the island has a medicinal garden that produces a fair amount of magic potion materials on its own.

Easily, Duke found materials to make Basic Magic Recovery Potions inside, enough to produce fifty or sixty doses.

With Hela resting for a few days, and having nothing else to do, Duke went to a vacant small laboratory and began making Basic Magic Recovery Potions.

...

Two days later.

[Basic Magic Recovery Potion Level Up, Spiritual Power +0.2]

[Basic Magic Recovery Potion: LV2 (1/40)]

After completing his twenty-fourth Basic Magic Recovery Potion, the corresponding skill on his Skill Tree leveled up.

On the branch, the green bud had blossomed into a tender green leaf.

It seemed that the max level for this kind of potion was level five, which put Duke's mind at ease.

He had worried that the Magic Potion skill levels would be too high, requiring excessive practice, which would demand considerable time, effort, and resources.

Because refining magic potions is complicated, unlike ordinary skills that can be leveled up simply by casting at will.
