Diary of a Criminal Investigator

Chapter 154: He Is Not the Murderer

After Zhang Wei was arrested, he cooperated fully with the preliminary hearing.

"Two days ago, around seven in the evening, I was driving my taxi near the meat processing plant and picked up that woman halfway."

Their meeting was initially just a typical interaction between a passenger and a taxi driver.

However, they ended up arguing after exchanging a few words.

"I hadn't intended to kill her; she brought it upon herself."

According to Zhang Wei, Wang Guizhi looked down on him. After getting into the car, Zhang Wei tried to initiate a conversation.

"In our line of work, we drive alone for an entire day; passengers usually chat a little when they get in."

"But that woman insisted I was hitting on her, trying to harass her."

"Where did you take action? What did you use to kill her?"

"Right by Cold Storage No. 8. I used an expandable baton. I keep one in my car for self-defense."

In the interrogation room, Zhang Wei began explaining the details of the crime.

He was very clear about the cause of their conflict, the place where he attacked, and the method of murder.

"After killing her, I put her in Cold Storage No. 8 to freeze for a while. I was worried about the blood when dismembering, thought it would be hard to deal with."

"Where's the dismembering tool?"

"I hid it inside the cold storage."

"Why did you dump the body on Folk Street?"

"Last month, I was eating on Folk Street and found a fly in my food at a noodle shop. They wouldn't compensate me."

"I thought I'd throw it there to disgust them a bit…"

While Zhang Hui was interrogating, Ren Qiang sent someone to find the initial crime scene as Zhang Wei described.

Sure enough, the initial crime scene was found near Cold Storage No. 8.

The dismemberment site and tools were also found in the cold storage without issues.

In addition, more than twenty plastic bags containing the remaining parts of Wang Guizhi's body were found in the trunk of Zhang Wei's taxi.

The body dismemberment case on Folk Street was declared completely solved.

Next were the procedural tasks.

Surveying the initial crime scene, studying the dismemberment site, and organizing the remaining body parts.

Additionally, the perpetrator's height, fingerprints, DNA, blood type, and other information need to be collected.

In about a week, once all the documentation is complete, the Criminal Investigation Team can handle the transfer.

Crime Scene Investigation Office.

"Lu, you're responsible for gathering the suspect's information."

Liu Guodong wrapped himself in a coat and called out to Yang Sen and Old Bai: "Let's head to the scene first."

The group responded and each started their preparations.

Detention Room.

Lu Chuan met Zhang Wei.

Square face, dark skin, and thick eyebrows.

Perhaps due to years of driving a taxi, Zhang Wei was slightly hunched over.

Before being transferred to the detention center, Zhang Wei would be temporarily held at the Criminal Investigation Team, but he wouldn't always stay in the interrogation room.

On the first floor of the Criminal Investigation Team, there are two special holding rooms for temporarily detaining suspects.

Tomorrow, Zhang Hui will complete the necessary procedures to transfer him to the detention center.

Lu Chuan heard from Old Bai that there's an unwritten rule in the detention center. Generally, if the prison cells are sufficient, suspects charged with murder aren't housed with others.

In the holding room, Zhang Wei was curled up in a corner.

His basic information like height and weight had already been measured by the police; Lu Chuan was mainly there to test his blood type, take fingerprints, and extract DNA samples.

"Will I die?"

Zhang Wei cooperated fully with Lu Chuan's work, raising his arm, having his blood drawn, pulling out his hair, without blinking an eye.

Lu Chuan nodded seriously: "If you really killed someone, then yes, definitely death."

Murder doesn't always result in death; it could be a life sentence.

But dismembering a body after murder, that's extremely heinous, with a massive impact. The death penalty is unavoidable.

"Certain death…"

Zhang Wei muttered to himself, not caring as Lu Chuan left.

After leaving the holding room, Lu Chuan still had work to do.

The complexity of a murder case is far beyond what most people would imagine.

And this was a dismemberment case, so the documentation for the crime scene investigation could fill a storage box.

At the forensic laboratory, Lu Chuan processed the collected materials.

Fingerprint entry, blood type testing, hair follicle processing...

Huh?

After just entering the fingerprints into the system, Lu Chuan was using test strips to determine Zhang Wei's blood type.

"Type A blood?"

Lu Chuan thought he saw wrong and rechecked the color on the test strip. It was indeed Type A.

But this doesn't make sense.

"Is there a problem with the test strips?"

Blood types, including human ones, are based on specific antigens on the red blood cell membrane.

There are actually two systems for classifying human blood types.

One is the widely known ABO blood type system which categorizes human blood into A, B, AB, and O types based on antigen types.

Besides these, a rare few have another blood type classification system.

That is the RH blood type system, with the RH negative blood type frequently mentioned in news reports classified under this system.

Confirming blood type is a basic skill in Bloodstain Pattern Analysis.

In the past, testing blood type required specialized chemical reagents, which was quite troublesome.

Now it's much easier, just a drop on a test strip, and the color change determines the blood type.

However, in practice, the accuracy of the test strips isn't always 100%.

For instance now, Lu Chuan detected Zhang Wei's blood type as A, but it didn't match the blood type from the dripping bloodstain extracted from the dismembered parts.

That blood type was AB.

And the victim Wang Guizhi's blood type was O.

This means that the dripping bloodstain found on the dismembered part wasn't Wang Guizhi's; it was most likely the killer's.

But if Zhang Wei was the killer, why wouldn't the dripping bloodstain match his blood type?

Lu Chuan retrieved another test strip and conducted the experiment again.

Type A blood!

Still Type A blood!

Why is this occurring?

Two possible explanations, the first being an error in the blood type detection of the dripping stain extracted from the body parts.

However, since the dripping stain had already dried, it couldn't be tested with the strip; Lu Chuan used the traditional chemical reagent method.

This method is highly unlikely to be erroneous.

The other possibility is an issue with the current batch of test strips Lu Chuan is using.

The test strips in the forensic lab are replenished each year, and these test strips were here before Lu Chuan started working.

Upon checking the production date, they were already two years old.

Though not yet expired, problems during storage or transport might have caused them to be ineffective.

In a murder case, there can't be any mistakes.

This time, Lu Chuan abandoned the test strip method and went straight to chemical reagents.

In a beaker, a drop of bright red blood was dripped into the chemical reagent, and the color changed immediately.

The color of the beaker contents became increasingly similar to the comparison color chart.

Three minutes later.

Type A!

The blood test result for Zhang Wei was definitely Type A blood!

After confirming the result, Lu Chuan's expression changed dramatically.

Zhang Wei... might not be the killer at all!
