Diary of a Criminal Investigator

Chapter 169: Scarface Brother at the Antique Shop

After a hearty meal, it was already past ten o'clock.

But inside the Elfa, the temperature was manageable, and the spacious interior made the few people on the stakeout feel no fatigue at all.

Although Lu Chuan was not particularly fond of this car.

Basic cars required an additional cost, and without soundproofing renovations, they were barely drivable.

Besides being thin, spacious, looking luxurious, and being pricey, there weren't any other advantages.

"Director Huang, any updates from the market side?"

Huang Jianmin nodded: "The black box has nothing to do with the fish seller; it was placed there by someone else. We've checked the surveillance, and Old Song and his team are following up."

"And on this side..."

"We need to keep an eye on it for now. Since there's no meeting with the people from the villa side, it indicates that the two sides aren't closely linked."

"If we capture one side, chances are the other side won't be alerted."

Huang Jianmin was apparently a veteran in this field: "First, gather intel, and then decide which side to capture."

It's best to pick the easy target first; with more information, the next step becomes clearer.

This resulted in a whole night of waiting.

The next morning.

Lu Chuan opened his eyes; it was already six-thirty.

Last night, Huang Jianmin, Old Luo, and Yang Lin took turns keeping watch, sparing Lu Chuan the overnight duty.

"You're awake?"

Yang Lin had the first watch last night and went to sleep early.

The spacious Elfa didn't feel cramped for the four of them.

"Here, have a bag of milk."

In a daze, Lu Chuan took the milk that Yang Lin handed over and noticed it was still warm, just at the right temperature to drink.

In the dead of winter, it's nice to have a bag of hot milk while on a stakeout; Huaguang Street Police Station's logistical support is decent.

"Did the station provide this?"

Yang Lin shook his head: "No, it was your cousin. He delivered breakfast early before dawn. There's soy milk, fried dough sticks, and steamed buns. I remember you liked fried dough sticks during university, want one?"

It turns out it was Lu Yao who brought it.

It's a shame this guy's working security; he could manage the company cafeteria after taking over his dad's business.

"How's it going on that side?"

Lu Chuan downed the milk in one go and gestured towards the villa district entrance, inquiring about the surveillance results from the night.

"No movements."

Yang Lin shook his head; with stakeouts, most of the time, there are no results.

The experience boils down to enduring loneliness and hunger.

Over another hour passed, and daylight fully broke.

"Alright, let's withdraw. Lin Tao and the others are here to relieve us."

Huang Jianmin stretched and pointed to a white van outside.

"That's the largest vehicle at the station, rather shabby but a priceless asset during stakeouts!"

Staking out within jurisdiction differs from external operations; no need to file for travel expenses, saving station resources.

With ample manpower, at least two shifts are usually feasible.

Lu Chuan had already reported to the squad, and Qin Yong fully appreciated Lu Chuan's efforts in aiding local precincts during his grassroots tenure.

"The squad has nothing major recently. Focus on guiding things at Huaguang Street and call me if necessary."

These were Qin Yong's exact words.

Lu Chuan and the others rested at Huaguang Street Police Station for two hours.

The person who placed the black box in the market's fish shop was almost fully understood.

Old Song returned in a hurry: "Director Huang, the situation is clear!"

"The person who placed the black box in the market is named Zhang Baoku, nicknamed Zhang San, a small-time thug from the Fishpond Road area."

"He currently lives at number twenty-eight in the fishpond. Do we apprehend him?"

"Alone?"

Old Song nodded: "Confirmed, he's alone. Sun and the others are already staking out at the fishpond, ready to act anytime!"

One individual versus over a dozen.

Huang Jianmin quickly made a decision.

"Arrest Zhang San first and interrogate him!"

"Yes!"

Fishpond Road, number twenty-eight.

Huang Jianmin led over a dozen policemen, getting ready for the final preparations before the arrest.

"Check firearms!"

Click, click, click.

The sound of gun bolts being pulled: "Group one ready!"

"Group two ready!"

"Group three ready!"

"Alright, according to the prior arrangement, group one will enter through the front door for the arrest, group two through the rear window, group three stays outside the courtyard!"

Zhang Baoku lived in a self-constructed house with a small courtyard, surrounded by similar yards.

"Action!"

Bam!

The sound of a door being broken was deafening.

"Don't move! Police!"

"What's your name?"

The arrest went far smoother than expected.

Since taking office, Huang Jianmin put in maximum effort for every arrest, deploying all thirteen able-bodied officers from the station, fully armed.

The strategy was to crush the opposition like a thunderbolt, catching them in a bewildering state.

When Zhang Baoku was apprehended, he hadn't even gotten out of bed yet.

In just his boxers, he was handcuffed.

"Search thoroughly, don't miss any corner!"

With the person caught, the job was more than half done.

"I... didn't do anything... Why, why arrest me?"

"Didn't do anything?"

"The black box at the market's fish shop, what's up with it?!"

Upon hearing Huang Jianmin mention the black box, Zhang Baoku froze, his face turning pale as paper.

Realizing his biggest secret had been exposed, Zhang Baoku spilled all his secrets like a bamboo tube pouring out beans.

"Officer!"

With this address, it was evident Zhang San had undergone quite a bit of correction: "I'll confess!"

"I'll confess everything!"

"Speak, what's with the box, who told you to deliver it, who did you give it to, explain everything."

Not many can remain composed in handcuffs.

Like facing a murder charge, during police interrogation, unless guilt-free or naturally dull-brained, passing the ordeal relies only on accumulated experience.

Zhang San, evidently an outstanding one among them.

"The box was given to me by Scarface Brother; I don't even know what's inside. He just told me to deliver it to Wang's Fish Shop at the market and leave it at the side; nothing else to worry about."

"Delivered over a dozen times, and each time I got five hundred bucks!"

Without hesitation, Zhang San immediately ratted out his benefactor.

"Delivered over a dozen times, and you don't know what's inside the box?"

Zhang San, looking dejected, said: "I really don't know. The box has a combination lock, and I didn't dare to open it."

"But no doubt, it's not light to carry..."

"Are you referring to Scarface, the owner of Tianbao Antiques Shop?"

Old Luo suddenly asked a question.

Zhang San's eyes lit up: "Yes, yes, it's the owner of Tianbao Antiques Shop. Each time I met his request, took the box from beneath an overpass in Red Flag Square, and delivered it to the market per his instructions."

"Tianbao Antiques Shop?"

Huang Jianmin didn't have much impression of this establishment, so Old Luo explained: "An old shop on Culture Road, this Scarface's real name is Chen Wen. In his youth, he often got into brawls, was arrested a few times, and got a scar on his face from being slashed in a fight."

"Group one, take him back; groups two and three, come with me to the antiques shop!"
