Diary of a Criminal Investigator

Chapter 100: Mathematical Transformations

Binzhou City Criminal Investigation Team Crime Scene Investigation Office.

Wang Hao organized his team to start DNA analysis of the evidence collected from the basement.

Lu Chuan also began analyzing the thirteen blurred fingerprints.

In addition, some footprints were collected in the basement, which Lu Chuan also needed to analyze.

"You can do this too?"

Wang Hao was somewhat surprised to see Lu Chuan processing the footprint images; footprint analysis is different from fingerprint identification.

Fingerprint identification analysis is something even regular officers at a police station can participate in, not to mention specialized criminal police.

But footprint analysis is much less widespread compared to fingerprint identification.

Even Wang Hao himself can only calculate the height of the footprint's owner using formulas like the seven times the foot length.

And this bit of information is clearly far from true footprint analysis.

Lu Chuan took out a pack of soft Zhonghua cigarettes, opened it, and handed one to Wang Hao: "I know a bit. I heard Chen Gang hasn't confessed anything yet, and I thought there should be plenty of traces he left in the basement. Even if he doesn't talk, we've got him."

Wang Hao took the soft Zhonghua handed over by Lu Chuan with some surprise, understanding the implication.

His initial suspicion seemed correct; Lu Chuan joining the special task force wasn't just because of his technical skills?

How many honest cops smoke soft Zhonghua?

All lines of battle are firing on all cylinders!

Although Li Donglin comes from a technical background, he indeed has some insights into handling cases.

Currently, there are three lines progressing.

One side mainly focuses on Chen Gang's preliminary interrogation; since hard tactics don't work, they can only try soft ones.

Chen Gang is from Haizhou City, and Qin Yong is already contacting his parents, hoping to use family ties to influence him.

Another side is the work Lu Chuan and his team are doing, using technical means to obtain more evidence.

Additionally, there's a biotechnological company that transferred money to Wang Manli, whose owners or major shareholders are all a person named Wang Liang.

There are financial investigation experts in the task force tracking down the other party's information, but there has been no progress so far.

The other party's registered companies are all shell companies without Wang Liang actually present at the real addresses.

Lu Chuan, who has mastered advanced fingerprint identification and analysis skills, also experienced a great increase in speed when processing the footprint images.

Data measurement, calculation, and comparison with Chen Gang's foot sample quickly completed the matching analysis.

This time, the footprint analysis was somewhat different from what Lu Chuan had done in the past.

Previously, it was about analyzing the owner's physical characteristics based on the footprints at the crime scene, which was more challenging.

But this time, it only needed to prove that the footprints in the basement belonged to Chen Gang.

This was much simpler.

Next was the main event, analyzing the thirteen fingerprints that had become a mess.

This time, Lu Chuan didn't directly use the image processing software built into the fingerprint matching system for preprocessing.

Instead, he used professional PS image processing software.

The blurred fingerprints were layered on top of each other and required stratified processing of the fingerprint images.

This function was beyond the capability of the system's built-in image processing software.

There was also the need to improve the clarity, which was arguably the most crucial ability in Lu Chuan's advanced fingerprint identification skillset.

Clarity processing of fingerprints is somewhat simpler than that of general photos.

After all, fingerprint images are just some complex, intertwined lines pressed together.

Unlike traditional images, which involve color changes.

Even so, it's not a simple task.

To untangle a mess of fingerprint images into a clearer one that can undergo identification analysis requires high-level mathematical and image processing knowledge.

As for why mathematical knowledge is needed, this relates to computer principles.

All data stored in a computer is essentially binary relations of "0" and "1".

The fingerprint image Lu Chuan sees on the computer screen is essentially a transformation of numbers.

With intertwined fingers, Lu Chuan first transformed the figures.

Here, he used orthogonal functions and orthogonal matrices to perform a two-dimensional linear reversible transformation on the original image.

Professionally speaking, this involves using functions and matrices to transform the spatial domain image into a transfer domain image, which facilitates feature extraction, enhancement, compression, and image encoding.

Then, Lu Chuan used Fourier transformation to perform feature analysis on the original image's two-dimensional spectrum.

This alone wasn't enough; Lu Chuan next employed the Walsh-Hadamard transform, an addition and subtraction operation on the image's two-dimensional spectrum, which allows for secondary editing of the image on top of the Fourier transformation.

Finally, there's the discrete Karhunen-Loeve transformation, the final method for image filtering, compression, and clarity purification.

Of course, Lu Chuan's skillset also includes cosine transformation, sine transformation, Haar transformation, and skew transformations, among others, but the choice of processing methods varies depending on the fingerprint's degree of degradation.

For the current fingerprint being processed, within the experience of advanced fingerprint identification and analysis skills, using the Fourier transformation, Walsh-Hadamard transformation, and discrete Karhunen-Loeve transformation worked best.

A focused man is the most attractive to the opposite sex, and this seems to be true everywhere.

Hu Xiaoyue, a college newcomer to the Binzhou City Criminal Investigation Team's Crime Scene Investigation office last year, is still in the stage of running errands.

She had just followed Wang Hao's instructions to bring tea to Lu Chuan and saw the magically changing images and the streams of data on the computer screen.

This wasn't fingerprint analysis; it was like the Matrix.

Moreover, Lu Chuan's sharp profile took on a magical quality under the flickering blue light of the computer screen.

Thus, a somewhat strange scene played out with Lu Chuan staring at the computer screen, his hands swiftly dancing on the keyboard.

Standing behind him, a tall policewoman in uniform held a teacup, staring intently at Lu Chuan at the computer.

Forensic Doctor Shen clearly couldn't see this scene.

The processing speed of the thirteen fingerprints was not slow.

With the support of advanced fingerprint identification skills, it took Lu Chuan about twenty minutes to process one fingerprint.

Hu Xiaoyue was amazed to witness firsthand how a fingerprint resembling a smudge transformed into a normal one.

It was as if the fingerprint had gone to Korea for the most delicate cosmetic surgery.

While the face remained the same, it wasn't entirely the same face.

The eyes were larger, the nose sharper, and the lips fuller.

Every detail exuded comfort.

The fingerprint matching system of the Binhai City Criminal Investigation Team and Haizhou City's system are the same, allowing Lu Chuan to log in with his account here.

Once a fingerprint was processed, thirteen distinct features were subsequently marked.

A string of data appeared below the fingerprint, and the coordinate data of each feature point started entering the system.

Lu Chuan opted for the complete matching mode.

After processing the system data, Lu Chuan minimized the interface and dragged the second fingerprint image into the PS software for processing.

Again, the transformation of figures to numbers and numbers to figures began.
